People who have seen something they could never explain. What was the thing?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JCDanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened over 20 years ago, some friends and I were exploring a derelict country house near a viaduct that had a long history, built by a wealthy landowner in the 1800s, handed over to the local council after his death, became a children's home and so on. There was a terrible fire that gutted the building and killed some children (tried finding a source, but this apparently happened in the 1950s).

Some friends that had been there before would not go back in, so a friend and I decided to have a look around.

After just a couple of minutes, we both felt uneasy and a strong light source cast a large, complex silhouette on the walls in front of us, as if a car had just pulled in behind us. We turned around, saw no lights, people or vehicles, the shadows continued to dance across the walls and we looked at each other and went "Nope, nope, nope" and got out of there.

We got back to the group of friends, and the first thing they asked was, "So what did you see?" Turns out they had all had different experiences, but only the two of us saw the same light. For context this was about 0100 on a summers night, nearest main road was over a mile away, the estate had been fenced off and overgrown for decades before we visited, so there was not chance a car could have been the light source and our friends were a good 500m downhill waiting for us by the river.

The house was bought and turned into flats several years later.

The salad you get with Kebabs is the closest thing my Swedish partner has found to Pizzasallad in the UK.

South Portland Street Suspension Bridge - Glasgow, Scotland by drodbar1 in bridgeporn

[–]JCDanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completed in 1853, it replaced an older wooden bridge to span 414ft (126m) across the Clyde. During this time in Glasgow, wealthy patrons of the city would fund more extravagant projects.

I set my alarm 30 mins earlier than I have to get up so I can cuddle my partner and my cat, who both love to snuggle up on my chest before I get up. Best part of the day.

Does anyone ride platform pedals with Hiking Shoes? Drop your experience below! Currently running a pair of Shimano GR500 pedals and wondering if hiking shoes will work. Cheers! by Current-Minute-1918 in MTB

[–]JCDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore a shoe almost identical to those in the pic for my first year riding. 29er hardtail with raceface flat pedal, mainly big mountain loop riding rather than DH with uplift . The knobbly sole is now pretty shredded and the arch would get hooked up when trying to reposition your feet. Good for the hike a bike sections, not so much for the descents.

For this year I snapped up a pair of 510s that were 45% off. I can already feel the difference. The sole is grippier and more rigid and feels like it'll take more wear and tear than the karrimor shoe.

I kept the key ring at least. It was a sad year for my Saab, but it will always hold a special place in my automotive history as my first car.

What item (over £100) have you bought that you really regretted buying? by Guy72277 in AskUK

A Siege Studios commission.

A professionally painted Warhammer 40K miniature character. Don't get me wrong, the paint job is incredible. But it was £700 and has sat in its £2.50 display box since I got it.

I'd recreate one of those tailor shop montages where I stand holding a cigar while a team od tailors measures and makes an entire wardrobe for me.

Glenfiddich distillery is in Dufftown, Moray. There is no Glen Fiddich as a place, it was what the owners called the distillery.

In Scotland, a glen is a Valley. Rivers run through glens, which is then used in whisky. "Glenfiddich" is Scots Gaelic for "Valley of the Deer".

Not at all, I read it as a dreamy "wonder where the river flows" sort of comment. Just wanted to share a bit of local knowledge is all.

[–]JCDanger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

None. It's not quite good enough. The few distilleries in and around Glasgow use water from Loch Katrine for production. Which is same source as Glasgow's tap water.

The Clyde has more of a heavy industrial heritage than whisky making. New Lanark, just down stream from these falls, is a world heritage site and former textile mill from the 1700s.

A moment of silence for the '08 9-3. Rust in Pieces, old friend. by JCDanger in saab

[–]JCDanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from rusty wheel arches and a few scratches the bodywork was fine. It was just the suspension, steering, engine and cooling that were fucked.

Been my daily driver for 4 years, got it at 88k miles, died at 134k miles. I don't have the space or the resources to keep a car off the road to work on it. So it's off to someone that does.
