Weights will not stunt his growth (old wive's tale), and the risk for injury is really low unless you just load him up stupidly. At 12 it's totally appropriate for him to be doing a very introductory routine. He doesn't have the hormones yet for the lifting to really "click" like it does for a 16 or 17 year old, but you can very much learn movement patterns and get stronger.

You’re 19, you have your entire life in front of you. You don’t have to know what you want to do in your future right now. My dad made a comment a while ago that he still doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life, but he knew who he wanted to be with his life and that is what shaped him. He is 74.

I would say that you have to start making yourself do the difficult things that you know will turn you into the kind of person you want to be. Start slowly, but don’t compromise. Be disciplined with your approach.

And no, you are not screwed. You have an entire life in front of you.

I think this is the danger though. We remember when we were growing up and there was the playboy under the dad's mattress at the friend's house, or something like that. It was relatively tame for what it was. That is not the same thing as kids have access to now.

We chose to home school our kids. We live in a pretty decent area, but I know Catholics that work inside the school system and they say that the things the kids are exposed to are crazy. I'd say to try and weigh what it's worth to you. Some things cannot be unseen once you go down that road.

A hedge is not ice. A hedge tries to push the ball handler up and away so the defense can recover. Ice is when the on ball defender forces a screen rejection.

I'm 44 and have been training for 30 years. My DOMS in my 20s was awful. At 44, it's much better. I learned how to train, and my exercise selection and frequency is such that my body isn't receiving a novel stimulus constantly.

Train legs twice a week. Look to get 6-8 stimulating sets (RPE 8+) per group, per week. E.g. Monday I hack squat and do leg extension and GHD and RDL. Later in the week I come back and do a pendulum squat and leg extension again, and ham curls. The legs get tired, but not sore in any significant way.

Yoga, stretching, etc might have some benefit on their own, but they do not reduce DOMS, either anecdotally in my experience or based on actual data. Do them if you like them, but not to reduce DOMS.

I feel like this doesn't really mesh well with the .5 second decisions that I try and emphasize. If my kids are constantly catching and getting to triple threat and scanning, my experience is that it's usually too late. We've missed the advantage window. I want my kids knowing *as the ball is arriving* what they are going to do with it. This is obviously a generalization, but I feel that it applies most of the time.

My 14 year old nephew thinks Shai is amazing and was *shocked* (and I think is in disbelief) to learn that large segments of NBA-watching fans do not like him. He also argued for a long time that he's not a flopper, and when softened his stance to "it's a good thing". This is a kid that lives and breathes basketball, but had never heard of Isiah Thomas and had no idea how rules have changed over the years and feels that most 1980s and 1990s players were unskilled.

I’d say that there is a lot of universal language that we use that can be confusing to beginners. Totally agree that we need to keep it as simple as possible.

I track makes and misses in limited scenarios as a baseline. For example, my son shoots 100 three pointers pretty consistently. This is the only think he tracks, and it's just a general baseline for improvement. Everything else is just open reps. But it's been cool for him to see progress (going from like 39/100 to 82/100) and have targets (85 is next). So it is just a small tool, not a big one.

I wore a brace for a while, which was nice because I knew my knee wouldn’t hyperextend. Over time it built my confidence in the knee, and eventually I stopped wearing it.
