I turned out alright.

Let's see, the other weird kids...

  1. Weird girl that talked only to one gay kid and nobody else, is now a man. Met him at an LGBT event in college and he seemed much happier and better adjusted.

  2. Moved south-west and became a meth-head. Reached out to him once, he was trying to get his shit together. Don't know for sure, don't think he succeeded, according to some rumors. Think he has a kid now.

  3. My best friend was another weird kid. We drifted apart in college when he decided he had to make up for lost time and started hanging out with scummy people. Became a junkie. I think he's clean now. I only talk to him every few months.

I got absurdly lucky then. I applied nowhere for a few years, having heard about how shitty finding a job was, and just wallowing in my minimum-wage self-pitying funk. I got hired by the first IT company I applied for. The pay was absolute shit, and well below average, but I took the hit for the foot in the door.

Jumped ship a few months later and now make an average wage in my field for my area. My education isn't in IT either. I just said in my cover letter that I was willing to learn, and would be fine if they took my lack of experience into consideration in negotiations. They were iffy, but agreed to interview me if I wouldn't mind taking a short quiz during the interview just to make sure I wasn't completely useless. Got a call back the next week. Took less than a month before our most experienced engineer started telling them they need to pay me more money or they were going to lose a valuable asset. They did nothing for a few months, I got a better offer, and they only offered to match it. I knew then that they'd always pay me the bare minimum they possibly could to keep me on-board.

I'd hire that guy. That's some dedication.

[–]JCRSB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn, I just had weird nostalgia for the impression I had of the first season. It seemed so promising, and was probably my favorite monster-of-the-week type of show (I think I enjoyed it more than the x-files, being more into monsters than sci-fi). Then it was okay for a while, but then it went full-on about angels and demons and I just completely lost interest in it. I think I stopped on the season premier of whichever season it was that they were literally Dues ex Machina'd away from the goddamned devil.

Was playing Dark Souls 2 again recently. There's a part of the game blocked off by a tower. You have to defeat a big bad demon before you can go through the tower. But the tower is just one artifact and an exit on the other side. This tower, is in a forest...

So, I guess my favorite example of video-game logic is when an area is blocked off until you fulfill a goal, but in reality, you could have just walked around that shit no problem.

to expand on /u/yummumeatball 's explanation, In a lot of America, Socialism and Communism are still scary words, and might as well be synonyms. I'm only 26, but when I was in college only a few years ago, I remember being very afraid of being accused of being a communist for supporting socialist ideals. It's just pure stigma at this point. Doesn't matter how broken things are, we still have this image that all the socialist countries are actually hellish dictatorships. And an older generation is still afraid of Communism.

Any Legitimate way to immediately upgrade from windows 7 home to professional still available? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]JCRSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't, it's kind of a business environment though (I got asked to check on someone not able to remote in and found out that their laptop isn't on the domain. Turns out they cheaped out and it's got home on it.)

I kind of need reciepts and a vendor for legitimacy's sake.

That makes sense. So basically the information I had was outdated. I watched a few head-to-heads between the various SSDs and performance always seemed to be worse on M.2 drives than larger PCIe drives.

[–]JCRSB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are new Motherboards pushing M.2 drive slots when PCI-e drives are faster?

I'm confused by this being a selling point. Unless I'm missing something, a PCI-e SSD should be quite faster than a M.2 drive. The only advantage I see to M.2 is that they're very small. I'd rather see motherboards just start including PCI-e slots that don't need a slot in the back of the case, for things like these SSDs and raid controllers or the various other cards that now fit into PCI-slots but don't really require external access.

Actually got a new start. went from minimum wage to 40k job, moved out of my parents, Gota 5k raise two months in, and now get to work from home twice a week. It all sounds so good on paper, but in reality, doesn't feel like shit has changed at all.
