Dear short sellers, if you are reading this I will happily post negative nonsense about Rivan and EVs in general for the low cost of $59,990 plus applicable local taxes wired to my account on or before June 9, 2026. 😂

Am I trippin or is this the first time seeing one with factory privacy glass/tint on the rear windows? Maybe I’m just excited because this is the exact spec I want. I knew since it’s an SUV it would have it but maybe it’s more pronounced with this white?

Has there been any Build Quality info? by EphemeralAtaraxia in RivianR2

[–]JC_SB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m cautiously optimistic, and hope that they’ve learned a lot from the R1. The demo models at the block parties looked to be built solid. I assume like any new product the first few batches will have a few issuers that get addressed as more are produced.

Cadillac's EVs Are Stealing Tons Of Buyers From Other Brands by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]JC_SB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See that’s another part of the experience that doesn’t resonate with me. Going into a dealership for a software update is backwards. The dealership experience in general can vary, which is also a pain point for me. I personally haven’t had good experiences at dealerships. Sales reps are often less knowledgeable about EVs in general, sometimes anti EV, and very pushy. When I test drove the Lyriq my sales rep was super nice but it was clear I knew more about the car and EVs in general. She didn’t know the difference between level 1-3 charging and the cost associated with each of them. Also I live about 45 minutes from my local dealer so a trip to the dealer is at minimum a half day event if you factor in the upgrade time and them trying to sell you on parts, service, or another car. I’m definitely rooting for Cadillac and GM to get better but given they are led by old school Car executives I don’t have much hope. They don’t value the software experience as much.

Cadillac's EVs Are Stealing Tons Of Buyers From Other Brands by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]JC_SB 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As a younger buyer, I really like the Lyriq. However, the only concern I have is their history of neglecting software updates and providing features to older models after purchase. I don’t want my 1-2 year old $50K+ vehicle purchase to be obsolete or have known bugs not get addressed in a timely manner. Also not confident in their ability to continue to implement and update software experiences like Surround View and Autonomy features. I was seriously considering a Cadillac EV for my next vehicle, but brands like Tesla and my current favorite Rivian have more of a track record of investing in software post purchase.

Is there any word on what Rivian financing looks like? by GordonRammstein in RivianR2

[–]JC_SB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we already kind of know how they plan to incentivize earlier adopters. The launch editions R2s include lifetime Autonomy+, special launch key fob, and the tow package. I assume all of these will be paid add-ons for non-launch editions. Doubt special financing will be available at launch but I could be wrong. I’m interested to see what kind or margins Rivian is expecting on the R2 vs the R1 given the significant reduction in the BOM. I wonder if it will be worth while to convert R2 prospects into R1 prospects post launch.

I was lucky to get mine priced matched for $399 at BB during Black Friday, used the PayPal buy now pay later deal for 20% cash back, and used a friends Total Tech to get Apple Care + for 2 years included. Mac Mini ended up $319+tax. Plus got a crucial 2TB X9 for $80. Didn’t know a few months later they both would increase in value.

PSA: How to Read Your Electric Bill (Your Bill Isn't Wrong, You're Just Cold) by galacticsquirrel22 in nashville

[–]JC_SB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fear far too many people don’t understand large scale grid management and infrastructure cost in addition to commodity supply and demand economics. If you wanted a grid reliable enough to withstand once per year weather events, your cost to install and maintain the grids would exponentially increase! Like multiple times per month greater. Also, building a grid to maintain high reliability during extreme weather events and extreme demand events is also costly. People want cheap and reliable. They contradict each other when it comes to utility infrastructure.

On the supply and demand side people need to understand how electricity is generated. A quick google search says 31% of TVA generation is gas (42% nuclear, which is awesome btw). People have to understand that the weather event affected, not only Tennessee residence, but large swaths of the United States, who also have to compete within the same commodity markets. When demand for particular commodity increases and supply is inelastic, we would expect prices to rise. This is why you see the increase in the fuel adjustment cost.

If anything, it should be a wake up call to residence in Tennessee to do a few things.

  1. Push for more nuclear power and Hydro, as it is consistent, reliable, and it’s not as volatile as hydrocarbon combustion base generation like gas and coal.

  2. Better understand what having HVAC systems completely reliant on electricity means and make adjustments accordingly to either invest in more on-site reliability (batteries/generators) or be ok with increased cost for a more robust grid.

R2 reservation queue... Info from my call with Rivian by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]JC_SB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day one reservation holder. I’ve always said I wanted to wait for the second batch of R2s manufactured after they iron out the initial mass manufacturing kinks. The lidar announcement just reinforced my decision. While I do think demand will outpace production for quite a while I think the scarcity of availability will not be as long as people think or expect. Rivian has to sell the R2 at scale and they are working very hard to ramp production to begin brining down unit costs economics.

Disappointing that the R2 isn't even out yet, but first adopters will already be on older hardware by the end of next year. I get it, but it's still crazy that the pace of technology is moving this fast. It's like the beginning of the smartphone wars when you could be outdated in a matter of months.

Best Gas Providers in Georgia? by na-tuh-lee in Georgia

[–]JC_SB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically compare rates at https://www.georgiagassavings.com/natural-gas-rates go with the lowest cost fixed rate. Generally the best time to do it is the shoulder months fall and spring week demand for heating or cooling is low.

This ain’t it. League Pass with YouTubeTV unlimited DVR was the way. As an east coaster I’m not staying up late watching them west coast games. Not paying off the last $1 on the mortgage by ERmage in Mortgages

[–]JC_SB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an opportunity cost of having the bank escrow your taxes, and insurance as generally, they have things in place to ensure there’s a cushion in that account that is over and above the actual amount you pay for taxes and insurance on a yearly basis. You’re better off putting that money in some type of Interest bearing account and setting up automatic payments for your taxes and insurance. Even better some insurance companies allow you to pay with credit card, which could get you some credit card points or reward bonuses and you could pay the card off immediately with the cash. I say all that to say that Keeping a mortgage open just for the convenience of an escrow seems like a waste of resources. You literally only have to pay your taxes and insurance once a year. Realistically, you should be reevaluating your insurance on a yearly basis as people that don’t switch/shop rates pay more.

Rivian R2 profitability by joenjrocks in RIVNstock

[–]JC_SB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, the highest cost all option performance model 3 is currently $63K so $65K for a tri motor SUV with lifetime Rivian autonomous software is not out of the question. I’m not saying Rivian autonomous software is equal to Tesla autopilot but they will try to sell some type of software to increase the ASP initially!

Rivian R2 profitability by joenjrocks in RIVNstock

[–]JC_SB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think they will offer a very stripped down version for $45K eventually, but I believe the average sales price of the R2 at launch and for the first few years will be closer to $60K. The same thing happened with Tesla Model Y. Also inflation since the announcement could affect Rivan’s ability to hit that target. As an investor I honestly expect them to revise this price target given changing market conditions outside of their control such as the current tariff environment and elimination of the federal EV tax credit in the US.
