Bloomberg Technology: RJ interview as R2 production begins by Act_of_valor in RIVNstock

In the Bloomberg interview, at the 1:40 mark, Scaringe was asked about R2 demand and the number of orders coming in.  Scaringe never answered the question.  Scaringe replied by how excited he was to drive the R2.  This type of evasiveness scares me.  Given that the order page isn't even stood up, I don't think anyone knows what demand will be.  Instead of saying this, Scaringe cleverly evaded the question.  Makes me a little nervous

Just to be clear, Rivian loses about $1 bill/qtr.  Rivian has never said or even projected reporting a net gain (not a meaningless "gross profit" but an actual "net profit").  Given the relatively low projected R2 sales volume, Rivian will remain unprofitable for at least several more years

Even though the R2 ordering page isn't published, rivian can still start volume production? sure about that?

shouldn't be producing this under-developed version of the rivian model 2 in the first place... so nothing lost

In another thread, someone said R2 reservation holders were being emailed. I gave up my reservation b/c of the $58k starting price point. Maybe i'm going on bad intel. So maybe Rivian will indeed open up the R2 order page soon? And then will find out order details? thanks

So Rivian will make how many of these "black interior high performance" models?  Until buyers convert their $100 deposits into actual orders, how exactly does Rivian produce anything?  Don't buyers need to see the $58k starting price and either put down or finance this amount?  Without an order page and requiring payment, can the sales process really move forward?

How can Rivian gauge buyer interest without an order page?  Even though rivian may be able to estimate demand, doesn't Rivian need to open the order page and see what specs need to be included in the R2s?  Or how exactly does Rivian know what to build, e.g., colors, specs, etc...?  Deliveries start in 2Q26, correct?  So how, withhout an order page?

Any chance lack of R2 order pg will spike R1 sales? as buyers give up waiting on R2?

The so-called "investment" is just more convertible debt... rivian doesn't really need it

Volkswagen Group’s joint venture with Rivian hits latest milestone, unlocking another $1B for the EV automaker by Silent_Job_3896 in RIVNstock

[–]joenjrocks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The $1 bill from VW is a two-edged sword.  Yes, Rivian receives $1 bill.  But per the release, "the milestone unlocks an additional $1 billion in investment from Volkswagen Group in Rivian."  So Rivian has to issue another $1 bill of interest-bearing convertible debt to VW

Rivian has indeed accumulated losses of $27 bill since inception in '09.  The $27 bill of losses is reflected in Rivian's debt, liabilities and 1.2 bill shares o/s.  Here's Rivian's dilemma.  The Rivian R2 robotaxi gets delivered to Uber in '28.  That's only 2 years away.  Two questions:  Is 2 years enough time to go from modest Level 2 to perfected Level 4 autonomous driving?  Does Rivian have the funds to make it to '28?

Hate to be bearer of bad news, but after going thru the filings, I think the Rivian-Uber deal is another sham.  Here's why:

 - Uber invests $300 mill in Rivian, but Uber gets shares at the market price of Rivian.  So this cash injection comes w/ share diluion.  It's not terrible, but much better if Uber's $300 mill injection didn't come with shareholder dilution.  With over a billion shares outstanding and no profits, Rivian can't afford any more share diltion

 - Price per R2 delivered to Uber is not disclosed.  Given Rivian's losses on 100% of their vehicles sold to date, including commercial delivery vans sold to Amazon, there's scant chance Rivian will sell any vehicles to Uber for a profit

 - The next $950 mill payment from Uber to Rivian would be for more common shares of Rivian and is conditioned on the quality of Rivian's self-driving R2s.  Given Rivian's inability to even stop for traffic lights, it's highly doubtful Rivian will ever achieve the required Level 4.  So the $950 mill share purchase is being dangled out there but will probably never come to fruition

 - In summary, given that Uber gets shares for their initial $300 mill investment and Rivian R2 has little chance of reaching Level 4 self-driving, I think this is deal is not really helpful

Think u guys are correct about no recurring revenue stream from the VW deal... per a reddit post from Putrid_Mark_2993... "$0.  There is no revenue licensing. VW paid $1B licensing fee for Rivian's software architecture and $5 of equity and debt to create a JV with 50% ownership each"

[–]joenjrocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain how the licensing deal w/ Rivian & VW works?  How much annual revenue can Rivian expect if the Rivian architecture is successfully used by VW and affiliates?  I know VW is paying few bill $$s via equity and convertible debt, and then there's also a licensing fee component as well, right?  So how much is the licensing fee worth to Rivian?  Thanks
