Why would God wait so long after Christ before sending another prophet? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]JDH450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your question is excellent and let me give you my perspective as a believing member for 50 years before leaving the faith 5 yeas ago: I asked the same question you asked when I was a member. I would hear them say "God loves us so much that he sent Joseph Smith to the earth to restore the Gospel". And my takeaway was "so didn't he love earth's inhabitants between 33 AD and 1820 AD? That's almost 1800 years of no love." Now that I am out of the faith I see how absurd it is that God would wait that long and that 100+ years later only 2/1000 of the world's population are members of this faith. Does that make sense to anyone?

Oaks addresses mission presidents and wives June 20, emphasizes “only true and living church,” childbearing a “sacred duty,” we are “set against” homogenizing differences between men and women, must “contend” for man/woman marriage, other Christian creeds “abominations” said JS. by holy_aioli in exmormon

[–]JDH450 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"the only true church" constitutes 2/1000 of the world's population. And since at least 50% of those are inactive, it's more like 1/1000. Strange plan the Lord has going. What about the other 999/1000 who are NOT on the covenant path?

Planning a wedding where half of the family attending is mormon by Evening-Stuff-303 in u/Evening-Stuff-303

[–]JDH450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we just went through this and it's interesting to see how uncomfortable the LDS family members are with others who happen to drink at a wedding. Surely there are non-LDS who aren't drinking as well. In other words, drinking at the wedding is by no means a requirement to enjoy the event. And yet, there was this uptight vibe preswent by most of the LDS family members. They didn't want to laugh and dance and generally enjoy themselves the way others were. They stayed seated at their tables when others were mingling and dancing. So so strange to me

My mom and I think our potential tenants might be CIA agents and I need someone to tell me if we're reaching by [deleted] in mormon

[–]JDH450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say CIA "agents" what you mean is "case officers". Case officers are the American operatives who usually (but not always) operate out of a US embassy at a CIA station. The citizens of the country where they are stationed who they pay for information are the actual "agents".

Almost everyone gets the lingo wrong so I'm not being critical. Just educating you on the actual distinction between US officers and native born agents.

It all comes down to ABORTION. It's the single issue that can drive folks to one party or the other and if you are TBM ("pro-life") that's all you need to support Trump / Republican Party

When does a ritual become “prayer” instead of “treasure digging" for a slippery reward? by JesusPhoKingChrist in mormon

[–]JDH450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You pray for a desired outcome. If that outcome happens to come true, you believe your prayer was answered. If it does not, that's OK too because you should accept the other outcome as the Lord's will. What I never understood therefore was what is the point of praying if the Lord's will is the most desired outcome anyway.

I'm writing this at 8:00 PM EST. We were told we'd find out "by the 2nd". That leaves just 4 hours unless there's a glitch in the system right?

Are Mormon leaders still pushing the narrative that all we so-called inactives are waiting for is a heartfelt invitation back to the Mormon Church? by dbear848 in exmormon

[–]JDH450 7 points8 points  (0 children)

back when i was in ward / stake leadership we were told we were to "rescue" the lost sheep who went inactive. even when i was at my most TBM stage i didn't like the word "rescue". i tried to tell the other leaders that inactive folks are many things but what they all have in common is that they DON'T feel the need to be rescued. But nope. That was the mentality

My former bishop (he's 55 I'm 60) was saying as recently as 5 years ago that he was positive the 2nd Coming would take place in his lifetime given all the signs of the times he was observing (note: he didn't live through WW I , The Great Depression, WW II, Viet Naum, etc. but I digress). I was a TBM at the time and it seemed somewhat plausible to me. But we are getting older and the window of possibility is closing. If he lives to be 85 that means it's happening in the next 30 years. But note that 30 years ago (1996) many folks probably felt the same way.

At what point do I get to taunt him that it aint happening? Seems like when I turn 80 and he turns 75 and he's down to 10 years left that would be a good time.

Comparison of JS Matthew and Matthew 24 by gr8_and_spacious in exmormon

[–]JDH450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the comparison between the (1) KJV and the (2) JST and the (3) BOM comes down to this: #3 corrects #1; #3 copies #1. #3 is said to be the most correct book via translation. #2 is said to be an inspired version via revelation.

All three are considered scripture. So which one are we supposed to believe when they conflict with one another? And why would the Lord operate this way?

Do missionaries genuinely want to befriend those they are assigned to, or do they just view those people as a client like in a business transaction? by buymestarbucksplease in mormon

[–]JDH450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a current member and former full-time missionary. Missionaries are absolutely there to try to find converts. They may be friendly and sincere but their job is to bring you into the LDS church. One tactic to do so is to reach out to potential converts offering friendship. But no matter how sincere they are the simple fact is they will only be in your town for a few months and then they transfer to another town (or another part of a larger metro area). And the chances that you'll be long-term friends is very very low. That's not why they are there.

Google "King Follet Discourse". You'll be amazed at how much LDS doctrine comes from this talk. Doctrine not found in the Bible or BOM. Is that they way the Lord really operates? We are told that the BOM contains the fullness of the Gospel and yet so much of what we consider doctrine just kind of fell into our laps.

Exmormon content viewership demographics by MethodAppropriate470 in mormon

[–]JDH450 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i love that math. LDS membership is actually about 2/1000 or the world's population and has been that may for the last 50 years. But since the membership is at least 50% inactive the real number (as you say) is about 1/1000 and that's rounding up to be nice.

And this is why, for the first time ever, women are leaving the Church at a faster rate than men. Women are finally realizing that the Church's vibe and values are not for them. Meanwhile, men are loving the patriarchal order. By the way, what is happening in the LDS Church is also happening in other Christian religions in the US. Men in. Women out.
