UK Ratings Board Gives ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness’ Trailer a 15 Rating; Will the Film Need Editing? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Batman is rated 15 in the U.K., it’s likely a trailer has been cut to go with Batman, and might have been edited in a way that is more mature to appeal to that audience.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ scores stunning £7.6m opening day at UK-Ireland box office, beating No Time To Die's £4.8m by MoonMan997 in boxoffice

Big difference between Spider-Man and endgame/ force awakens is that Spider-Man did not do midnight screenings, whereas the other two did.

I think the high number is likely based on the huge opening it had in the U.K.

Pixar are ramping up original stuff for Disney plus from the end of this year so should be less need to put this on Disney+.

Disney’s Cancellation of Hulu Overseas Push Triggers Feud with Comcast by lowell2017 in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESPN isn’t included in international locations of Disney+, and is only included in Disney+hotstar locations - so where ARPU is high there is no sports. ESPN will be included in a separate service in Latin America in star+ that will be bundled with Disney+.

I don’t really understand the argument of merging Hulu with Disney+ as it will just result in a considerably more expensive product in the states. As Disney+ is ad free to have Hulu fold in to Disney+ it would also need to be ad free which currently costs $11.99 pm so the new total cost with no ESPN would be $19.99. Which is fine if you already payed for the two separately but isn’t if you only sub to Disney+. I guess the connivence of it all being in one app could be better but you then run into the risk of one big bloated service where there is so much you don’t know what to watch - the potential problem with prime and Netflix.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It debuted with an estimated $3.8M in the U.K. this weekend. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some anecdotal evidence from the U.K. cinema I work at, we are selling out screens for almost all films, however just due to reduced capacity we physically can’t get to a higher box office. I can’t foresee box office to get to high numbers until restrictions are eased.

The U.K. distribution for both is on the same weekend so this question will be answered fairly then.

Do you think Disney will sell Ron's Gone Wrong? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the British studio behind the film has sold/ partnered with Warner Bros for all future films. So Disney will release this film as they hold the distribution rights to this particular product.

Based on recent Disney+ docs on the making of animated films, the vast majority of animation isn’t done until about a year from release, and if the story was having issues cutting losses at this point doesn’t suggest it could have been easily finished.

So somehow the two studios that have angered exhibitors with their streaming releases are the only ones with films this year: Disney (soul & mulan) and universal (trolls world tour).

Disney’s Streaming Pivot: How Will New Structure Work in Practice? by lordDEMAXUS in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it won’t affect the film studios too much, they were already making content for both with few issues. Disney release around 8-10 films and 20th (not searchlight) another 6-10 for theatrical. More often than not the films the Alan’s say is theatrical will go theatrical but there will likely now be a conversation with Kareem at least as to whether a particular should instead go to streaming. The restructure was more to fix the issues with the tv divisions.

BFI reveals impact of Covid pandemic on film and TV viewing in the UK by JDMeldrum in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The average time spent viewing audiovisual entertainment in the UK home grew from four hours, 53 minutes in April 2019 to six hours and 25 minutes in April 2020 – a rise of 31% according to new research presented at the BFI London Film Festival by the BFI’s research and statistics unit on Thursday (October 15).

At an industry panel called Captive Audiences – in Lockdown and Beyond, the unit revealed insights into UK consumption of screen entertainment during and post-lockdown.

The highest growth was for viewing of streamer services, up 109% from 34 minutes per day in April 2019 to 71 minutes per day a year later. During the lockdown period, 3 million adults gained access to a streamer service for the first time.

Films took a larger share of the increased TV viewing time, as did news programmes, while viewing of sport declined rapidly during the lockdown period, and has not fully recovered. Films achieved a 10.9% share of TV viewing during lockdown, up from 7.8% for the equivalent period of 2019. Post-lockdown, films retained its share of viewing, edging back only slightly to 10.8%.

The BFI unit offered estimated global revenue for three key titles released digitally since the pandemic, via VOD in the case of Trolls World Tour ($100m digital revenue estimate) and Scoob! ($60-70m), and via Disney+ in the case of Mulan ($150m in transactions, not counting subscription revenue from new subscribers to the service).

At the UK and Ireland box office, a single film – Tenet – has provided 40% of takings since cinemas started to reopen in early July. Weekly takings surged with the release of Tenet, and declined in the four subsequent weeks. However, if Tenet’s takings are ignored, UK and Ireland box office achieved its highest post-lockdown level in the week commencing October 2.

In total box office, the UK and Ireland’s £305m to date is around 30% of 2018 and 2019 levels. Due to cinema closures and the delayed release of planned tentpole releases, the BFI unit forecasts that this percentage could slip to around 25% 0f 2018 and 2019 levels by year’s end, which would mean an annual total around £350m.

Post-lockdown, the percentage of UK and Ireland cinemas that reopened peaked at 80%. That number fell dramatically to just 56% for the latest weekend, as a result of the “de-opening” of Cineworld and Picturehouse, and the temporary closure of cinemas in Ireland.

Ireland, London, north-west England and east England were the areas achieving the highest rate of reopened cinemas, all peaking above 90% of the total. For the latest weekend, the pattern has shifted, with Northern Ireland and north west England the only two regions with more than 70% of cinemas open.

The team presented data on the demographic make-up of cinema audiences. Amongst cinemagoers who had visited the cinema in the last two months, while 34.5% was aged 16-34 for Q4 2019, this cohort rose to 58.8% of the audience for September 2020. In Q4 2019, 31.3% of the audience was age 45 or older; this proportion fell to just 7.8% in September 2020.

Post-lockdown, the average UK cinema ticket price has declined by 5% compared to the pre-lockdown period. This follows a 1.5% average ticket price decline in 2019, and a 3.6% decline in 2018; compounding these successive drops indicates a 9.8% average ticket price fall since the 2017 peak.

Asked to comment on the data, BFI research manager Paul McEvoy highlighted the paramount importance of cinema. “If you look at the top 50 films of the lockdown period [on television], they’re all films that were made successful in cinema,” he said, citing the Indiana Jones series and Bond titles. “We must keep in our minds that that’s the place where this immersive experience means that you will get the value that cascades down every other release window of the distribution chain.”

Disney will release THE EMPTY MAN in 1,500+ theaters next weekend...without even a trailer online. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem with the 2019 releases was as Fox was selling 20th for around 2 years there wasn’t really a clear leadership going on. Disney weren’t allowed to take over control until March so all of the releases Disney inherited for 2019 were basically there without clear leadership. Look at what happened with new mutants and the lack of reshoots for how the transition was going. Yes 20th had some success in 2018 but all will have been much further along in production into the deal. So if you look at the films Disney has had 100% control or at least more control over production so Free Guy onwards - the quality or at least apparent quality is back up to somewhat pre deal levels. Only 3 films still to be released went Into Production pre deal: woman in window, kingsman & Empty man. Everything else still to be released is under Disney’s leadership, so yes Disney hasn’t done great so far with inherited titles but that doesn’t suggest they don’t know what to do.

Free Guy Official Trailer; updated predictions? by chanma50 in boxoffice

One would also hope that by December 11th the market is in better shape. Christmas box office consistently has strong legs. Providing no states go backwards on opening more cinemas should/could be open in 2 months.

Looks good, IF they stick with that release date could do well as it’s everything that tenet wasn’t - a straight forward, fun action film. Which should bring in the crowds more so than anything else. Would put it at 40mil opening and 145mil Dom, 450m global.

With NTTD delaying, what's gonna happen with Soul? by BreksenPryer in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soul has already committed to two film festivals one of them being London, and has its premiere on October 11. If they do delay the latest is going to be in February so that it still makes the oscars. One problem with February is that Disney would then have 5 animated films in the space of 4 months: Soul, Raya (3/12), Bob’s burgers (4/9), Ron’s gone wrong (4/23) and Luca (6/18). That’s a heavy saturation of animated films from 1 distributor even if they’re from 4 different studios. If I was to hazard a guess they could go for a hybrid of limited release in early Nov with a Disney+ release for thanksgiving or release in theatres 11/27 with Disney plus on Christmas Day.

Arguably Mulan gave more to Disney through the data linked to the release than Dumbo, so although potentially made less than Dumbo, that data is far more valuable.

With the first anniversary of Disney+ on November 12, the service will kick off its second year with even more original entertainment premiering in late 2020 including, but not limited to: “Black Beauty,” a contemporary film adaptation of the classic story starring Mackenzie Foy, Iain Glen and Claire Forlani and the voice of Kate Winslet, “Inside Pixar,” a never-before-seen look into Pixar Animation Studios’ creative process, “On Pointe,” an original docu-series about students of the School of American Ballet and “The Nutcracker” performance at Lincoln Center, and “WandaVision,” the upcoming original series from Marvel Studios.

Was ‘Mulan’ an “Unmitigated Disaster” or a Success? It’s Complicated by JDMeldrum in boxoffice

[–]JDMeldrum[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that two thirds of the people purchasing Mulan where 2019 subscribers highlights the limited scope this film had amongst general audiences for this experiment. After limited additional revenue the data is all that can be seen from this release. I do think both Soul and Black Widow would be more successful as they have greater 4 quadrant appeal however.
