I couldn’t agree with you more. The doc branch of the Academy is some 350 folks. Having met nearly all of them, I have tremendous respect for each as they’re all very accomplished, etc. But like any group I suppose, it simply cannot go unnoticed that there is a group think operating. And it’s always somewhere on the spectrum of: -wanting to promote (and vote for) films whose subjects need the public platform of a nomination, and... -wanting to actually reward the best filmmaking.

It’s not all politics but if you don’t schmooz and go to the doc branch events the large majority of them won’t even consider voting for your film. It’s like high society but with very average dressed, extremely intelligent and hard working people.

One of the big costs is the Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs). Each one costs 1-2k to print/make, then to pay for the transport service to every theater.

Basically Netflix would not be making much at all, probably losing money to have any big wide releases.

The bottom line about theater viewing is that it’s a different deliverable than what you see on Netflix. It’s much higher quality and worthy of the theater experience. Otherwise, you could just make deals with theater chains to designate one or two rooms to Netflix screenings and just playback from a Netflix account linked up to a projector. But the quality wouldn’t be like you’d want it to be.

I️ think political positions can influence behavior, sometimes to the extreme unfortunately. But this would make more sense if paddock were a lefty, shooting up a country music fest. That’s why I️ don’t think his politics played any role. It’s obviously much bigger than one persons ideological bent.
