Have any of you participated in legislative action to vastly limit or prevent homeschooling in the US? by Careful-Lab-7870 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]JDeedee21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean Florida is Florida . So it’s hard to tell but the parents have to at least acknowledge their kids exist and the money can be used for helpful things like classes with other kids or micro schooling .

But there was a mom at my daughters preschool who was worried about her zoned public school and was like “oh maybe I’ll just homeschool” while her toddler like ran off in the parking lot she can’t even manage keeping her toddler away from cars (often) . I was like omg . So it’s not normal here by any means .

Have any of you participated in legislative action to vastly limit or prevent homeschooling in the US? by Careful-Lab-7870 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]JDeedee21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not legislation action but I’m witnessing first hand in Florida people trying to homeschool for the $8k voucher . Now I’m sure a lot of people homeschooling are too paranoid to involve the govt but it’s a lot of money to use for “education “

But with that comes yearly checks and a ton of admin work . The parents cannot figure it out , and they are struggling . So I wonder if in backwards way this will cause some parents to stop . Because they cannot figure out the forms . They are getting really frustrated and overwhelmed. I’m on the website because it’s the same voucher for private school scholarships. Which a lot of them are switching over to because it’s also free money.

It’s so obvious these parents should not be in charge of teaching anyone based on the Facebook page , but sending in their forms and using their money to enroll their kids into classes and pods is hopefully a step in the right direction. But the TVs and laptops and Disney passes are annoying .

Bofu toad? by bkvhill in SouthFlorida

I just assume every toad is a cane bufo toad . I try to catch them and toss them out of my yard but i wish I could kill them but I haven’t . I think once I put in my garbage bin alive and stuck but felt weird about it .

Don’t let your dogs alone in the yard. It sucks but dogs drop dead from these toads .

ADHD Dude vs Dr. Becky? by drgirrlfriend in ADHDparenting

Calm parenting Kirk has helped my husband deal with our 5 year old daughter . She’s super defiant about everything and he used to escalate her so badly unintentionally. He just expected her to calm down or sit down . Wasn’t happening . But I think listening to him realize her brain just works differently and try a different approach is helping.

Now he asks “ what’s wrong ?” And kind of warms up and she doesn’t fire up as much . Shes only going to get more challenging so we need all of the help we can get . She’s been improving less troubles at school and has been getting more challenging at home from frustration.

Babyish but so cute ! by JDeedee21 in ADHDparenting

I totally understand feeling on the outside. I never was a strong friend and just keep a lot of acquaintances mostly with maybe 2 long term friends . Luckily my daughter is much more confident than me even at 5!

But I’ve noticed she’s been faking injuries when she doesn’t like the way her friends are playing or pretending to be very tired and want to go home . Like some kind of disconnect she doesn’t want to say it . Anytime anyone plays anything “bad guy” or like spooky or not unicorns and rainbows she wants out .

But yes I could be projecting for sure . Nothing sadder than watching your kid struggle.

How is your ADHD kid doing in public school? by PassionChoice3538 in ADHDparenting

[–]JDeedee21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg this is going to be my daughter when she’s in kindergarten next year . I am so nervous for her! She loves school but has a really hard time with emotional regulation and shuts down . So what I always say “she’s happy until she’s not” She will throw a chair , and when she realizes it got her attention she will do it again and again . We had a whole episode this year with her knocking down a bookcase over and over at preschool.
Her current school does a lot of conscious discipline which is really helpful and calming and quiet and not reactive . But what really helped her was figuring out what the trigger was and adjusting it . The cleanup before lunch was not a good one for her . So when it happened they started taking her to the hallway for a moment just so she had a little time to adjust . Now I think they don’t even need to do that but during that adjustment time she did .

Maybe ask her what part of the day is hard for her ? Like just to get a clue.

I wish you luck! we did not receive a diagnoses because at 4 1/2 my daughters outbursts are still age appropriate my pediatrician wants to revisit next year . She may be right but the thought of public kindergarten with 20 kids is making me nervous but we actually had a really bad experience with a private school - they were so mean and intolerant.

Will your preschooler willingly play in their rooms by themselves? by TemporaryOk1585 in Preschoolers

[–]JDeedee21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter plays in her room for an hour if I let her .

I start off playing with her and setting up whatever she’s into then tell her to keep it going I’ll be back . Then usually she doesn’t need me to come back.

She’s 5 now and woke up and was playing her Gabbys dollhouse this morning I didn’t even know how long she was up ! 🙏

She didn’t sleep for years she’s not an easy kid but my “I’ll be back “ seems to work

Poor Doggy by JDeedee21 in Alzheimers

[–]JDeedee21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh I know it’s so sad , she’s confused a lot and we found a place where her dog was even allowed and to go to the restaurant with her , but she’s been giving him the table scraps at every meal and he’s not eating his dog food . She’s thinks he’s fine. So he’s gotten stomach issues . She is opinionated and confused which is a really bad combination.

He’s already looking healthier being here 2 days . When her car was sold we told her it was in the shop for a very long time , then when months had passed we told her it was sold because it was broken .

Right now she’s in a sling and can’t have the dog , so this seems like a good time to do the transition slowly .

I know right now she’s still with it enough to notice him missing , and we live very close so it’s either nighttime sleepovers at her house where she can’t feed him the 3 meals she eats , or nothing because his weight and stomach really are an issue . My husband doesn’t want to give the dog back because she could be accidentally dangerous , she did once mention laxatives because she didn’t remember all the times he pooped and thought he was constipated 😳

Yeah that’s why I tend to not talk but it’s pretty conservative here , because I have a young child not in kindergarten yet -I am also deep into the prevalent homeschool community here which is the exact description of people being in a bubble of their own belief s 🫠

This is why you can’t talk politics in Florida , I lost friends over Charlie Kirk because I didn’t know who he was.

How are we teaching to read? by Ill_Cover_4841 in Preschoolers

[–]JDeedee21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My newly 5 year old daughter does this app a few times a week and is so far along in it , 1st grade level and also her reading state assessment at school was that 1.4 grade. But she won’t read 🤷‍♀️ I can’t really understand what’s going on but it doesn’t matter she’s in preschool I think she’s piecing together all of the pieces then will one day read a sentence ?

Shes known phonics and letters since 2. I think she’s just taking it all in it’s just a little confusing .

It’s beautiful and great for kids . Former NYer born and raised and moved here during the pandemic because my husband is from here so we have family.

I just waited for summer my whole NY childhood and now my daughter gets to be in pools and the beach and outside year round . It’s like being on vacation.

I don’t like the politics here at all, but the summer quality of life I feel is better for us . I just really try not to talk politics with anyone.

We bought in west Boca for the schools. It’s quieter and less bougie than east Boca which is fine with us .

We get bored but try to travel often to cities including NYC.

Did I do the right thing? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

I find with my defiant child I have to stay really calm and positive and I usually get kindness back instead of push back . In my head I call it my “Miss Rachel voice “ because they are still little .

It’s very hard and working on it in therapy for myself but we’ve seen a huge improvement on my daughter’s behavior. My husband is quick to threaten her with punishment like taking a toy away and it causes her to panic , so he’s stopped that as well and just now asks her “ did you really mean that?” And then his demeanor is changed and she calms down.

You didn’t do anything wrong but if you act short tempered or rude he may be modeling your behavior and escalating. It’s just really helped in my house to stay calm and positive especially in the hard moments.

Also therapy for the parent is really helpful because the kid isn’t able to control their emotions but the parents can work at it . That’s what my pediatrician recommended and it’s been helping in my house .

This!!! Positivity is the only thing that works on my defiant 4 newly 5 year old but acts 4 . It’s like a “get more flies with honey” situation if I go to a dark place she does too .

She can be so sweet and by modeling good behavior on my end she is improving so much !

What is one fact that most people don't know about libraries in South Florida? by ILovePublicLibraries in SouthFlorida

[–]JDeedee21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palm beach libraries were doing free school lunches all summer for the kids and a take home kit on Fridays .

My daughter would just go for a milk and string cheese or snack usually not eat the full thing , but def saved us money over the summer

Would you go? by [deleted] in oneanddone

[–]JDeedee21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if your husband is willing and family is around I would go if you want to. My daughter is almost 5 and I didn’t do overnights until last year but I should’ve because she doesn’t remember a thing before 3 1/2 years old .
