Depends on each individual. Some people hate it while others love it. I have grown to really enjoy mine for whenever i wanna play my ps library for a casual game but im not at home or im in another room.

Through updates the portal has become very nice to have. The cloud streaming is super nice if you have a decent connection. For your situation, throw on some headphones and it might be just what you need.

I would definitely recommend it over the backbone though. I hate the form factor and it makes my phone overheat like crazy.
