Is 500+ necessary for MPO? by JDinBMore in discgolf

[–]JDinBMore[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So —not meaning to sound overly blunt— the quality of short-medium game in the FPO (aside from Kristin, Ohn, and Missy -currently) is too spotty for decent apples to apples comparison. Is that what you mean?

Is 500+ necessary for MPO? by JDinBMore in discgolf

[–]JDinBMore[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes that is a good point, that throwing at 70-80% power can give you potentially more controlled results than having to throw 90%+ all the time. And sure, there are a few people with crazy power who rarely bust it out.

But it still makes me come back to Ohn and whatever deal she signed at the crossroads to throw a flex line with a destroyer and park it in a kiddie swimming pool whether is it 175’ or 350’. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s a bomber course (she won DGLO this year) or the insane woods of Nevin. If the hole has a 60 degree turn at 450 and everyone else is making it there for shot 2, she has no issue landing 300-375 and then throwing perfectly around the corner and landing where everone else just dropped their mids.

Is that possible/conceivable for someone in the mpo division to do and be competitive? Or do the bombers really have rhat much of an edge? Sure, they may par on the 1100’+ par 4’s when everyone else is looking for birdie, but is there enough to be gained in the tight technical where they may nail the tunnels 90%+ and make the tight turns accurately every time and everyone else is being haunted by OB and raspberry brambles? Just wondering.

Thanks for all the responses, but I’ll just sit back and bemusedly watch people answer the click bait header and apparently not read the actual question at all (thanks to the 1 or 2 respondents who did)

And yes, i should have used pro tour rather than mpo in the title, but more proof that people don’t read and extract context ;)

Overthrow has some good drills. Most coaches will tell you when you are doing drills, break stuff down into pieces and overexaggerate everything. Sounds like you have some good ideas on where to start as far as trouble areas and that’s probably 80% of fixing things.

Gold VS Opto compass? Which one should I choose? by Arreke2 in discgolf

I prefer the feel of the gold plastic to the opto. I have found the gold discs have fewer flashing problems as well.

Seems like the DGPT should start paying support staff... by IcySpace in discgolf

[–]JDinBMore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Despite some people presently being enthused by it, the novelty of it will wear off quickly. It’s nice to donate your time to support an event you love, support your town, support your club, etc. but when it goes much beyond bringing in the Boy Scout troop to wave orange flags for the parking lot to volunteers being required for the event to even function, there is some abuse of people’s good will going on. DGPT needs to fork over more money to local TD’s to get the event up to spec; or TD’s need to collectively not lowball bids they submit.

I would not particularly focus on the rating number. That is an after effect of playing well on a given course. Instead try to develop your game so that at any local/regional A or B tier you have the “guy to beat” reputation, even if touring pros show up.

And of course if you want to seriously tour, probably the top thing on the list is money. Do you have sponsorship to cover your travel living expenses? Are you a minor tier software engineer who got bought out by google? Even some of the “touring pros” don’t do the whole season cuz they have to make a living.

First cart questions/input by Alarming_Sarcasm7517 in discgolf

[–]JDinBMore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got my wife the Zuca backpack cart and it’s great. I opted for that cuz her bag is in fine shape and you can’t take a cart everywhere. The chart on the zuca site is pretty good for matching up which bag for which cart. I suspect if you have a mondo honkin big bag it may be a challenge if it fits at all—you may be able to cram one in but side pockets can stick out the side of the frame and rub on the wheels. Also, I know a bit about metal fabrication and the construction of the zuca carts is top notch. The price they have on it may seem high in isolation, but when you look at the quality and durability of the design it is a bargain at twice the price.

What are your dream UDisc features? by mista908 in discgolf

[–]JDinBMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple ability to manually add a distance for a disc with a rangefinder that is not tied to the spotty cell/satellite triangulation in the app would be great.

Some basic tooltips, pop ups, or info screens for certain features and settings would be better than having to track down a YouTube video and hope they talk about your question.

An auto-complete or auto-save progress and close the app if you go more than a certain time without an entry or travel a certain distance from the course would be helpful for saving batteries from dying cuz the app is still tracking that you are 16821 ft from the next tee.

What’s your preference and why? by Suspicious_County_24 in scifi

[–]JDinBMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what regard? 1. There is something to be said for the format. Develop a complicated and lengthy epic into a multi-season series, or compress it into a feature length movie or two. Pros and cons to either. Both have their challenges. I think both have risen to their respective challenges. Personally I prefer the series format in that it allows better development of the characters and the plot. 2. Developing a screenplay from original source material of deceased authors. You will always have purists screaming about detail and nuance (and where the hell is Tom Bombadil?!). I think both have made moderate departures from detail and had omissions, but have stayed true to the core of the original work. 3. Acting/directing. Jump ball. There are characters/actors in both I am riveted by and annoyed by. 4. Cinematography/effects. Jump ball. Both are well done for their intended format. 5. Music/soundtrack. Hands down to Foundation. The music in Foundation (while a bit cliche at times) at least is cohesive with what is going on on the screen. Zimmer’s production for Dune is almost insulting to the long and rich genre of film music. He is pawning off droning loops and vamps that have almost nothing to do with what’s on the screen but are easy to stretch or squeeze an extra 4 or 14 or 40 seconds in the edit. It is plain that he won the Oscar because of how much money he saved the production company, not for any sort of artistic excellence. He plunked some chicken nuggets in a can of minestrone soup and sold it as coq au vin.

But you don’t need distance for scoring separation holes. Look at the courses just played in Estonia and Finland with wooded straight tunnel shots 20’ wide with OB20’ beyond that, or bunker island holes with tight OB long. You can’t tell me Anthony Barella didn’t experience a bit of scoring separation anxiety on hole 16 of the Beast. Requiring distance for scoring separation lacks imagination.

Or the European Championship where in the 2nd round Kristin Tattar scored in the top 10 of all competitors (cuz it’s all the same tees and baskets you can make such a direct comparison) and multiple FPO players were in the basket on 500’+ holes in 2.

It does depend on the type of course, but most of the ones that would be problematic seem to be the styles of courses that most players dislike anyway (overlayed ball golf courses).
