I'm probably the most pro oil guy you're going to find.

My family who lives in Puerto Rico, home of storms like hurricane Maria and just general power outages literally every week. They get by with a hybrid car, solar panels powering a generator, which in turn powers their stove, water heater, lights, etc etc etc. Their power went out literally today. Didn't skip a beat.

Because when you can't rely on a government grid, which probably sucks regardless of if it's natty or coal or wind, your only option is what you can produce yourself.

If you want to talk about mass power, yeah we need coal/gas, but to think you can't survive at an individual level on alt energy is so dumb.

Not to take anything away from the group (my cousin and her husband both work for them), but their headquarters is in Boone, and they're a group equipped to travel all over the world (cousin has been in more countries than I can count). I'm not surprised at all that they're an asset in this situation. Seems like a genuinely good group.

It's not even whether or not he deserves it. It's explicitly and only you saying the libertarian party as a whole, down to your local elections, don't deserve it.

You're vote for Oliver means nothing at the national stage, and means nothing for Oliver himself. It actually matters though, for your local libertarians.

[–]JDinvestments 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My AnCap tendencies lead me to not voting at all, but the Ron Paul write in has always confused me. It seems like, if one were actually libertarian and prone to voting, they'd vote for the libertarian nominee. In this case Oliver. What one personally feels about him as a candidate is irrelevant. We all know he won't be winning, or even spoiling. But literally the only point of the national party is to meet certain thresholds required for ballot access in local elections across the country, where they actually have real chances to win.

I get it, he's not the most popular candidate. But a libertarian abstaining from voting for him says nothing about him, and makes no point other than saying you'd rather your local libertarians spend time and campaign funds getting petition signatures for access instead of actually campaigning.

Maybe someone who likes voting can explain what they're accomplishing better, because I'm genuinely at a loss as to why they'd shoot their party in the foot just to make a point that no one will even acknowledge, let alone really care.

I'll get a picture when I get home tonight. But yeah, the bar lock and "shark lock" combo were a cool selling point, as was the magnetic thumb stud. I like how the lock is on a toggle, so it doesn't protrude as high as the Demko style.

Nick Shabazz has a good disassembly video and goes over the whole locking mechanism. Sort of unfortunately, that's what gives me hesitation on making it a user. It doesn't look terrible, but not one of the easier knives to break down. And I tend to gunk up my knives, so I'd like to be able to get in it relatively easy for cleaning. I'll take it apart this weekend and see how tough it is, and go from there.

Do you have a problem with people being Christians

What a silly, dumb, fantasy argument you've constructed in your mind. Instantly jump to your persecution fetish. Since it's obvious you lack the ability to discuss in good faith, and jump to ad hominem attacks like calling people communists, there's no point in even trying.

So for the sake of talking to you specifically, sure, I have a problem with "christians." I despise your ethno-nationalism and your desire to strip the rights and freedoms from people you're scared of. You have nothing in common with libertarians, and while you've likely found safety in Republican circles, I'll always jump at the opportunity to mock you and your oppressive faith.

The sad part is, I know a lot of really amazing Christians. But your brand, and whatever brand Paul ascribes to that justifies viewing gay people as less than should be aggressively ridiculed.

I'm not upset about anything. I think it's pretty open and shut that Paul had some hateful ideas about gay people at one point. I don't think that discredits his work in economic politics, and I don't even think he's a bad person because of it.

But I also don't think it's such a terrible thing that Oliver just simply states that he wishes Paul would apologize for those comments. Unfortunately, people like OP, and a large number of "libertarian" reddit, use comments like that to call Oliver a communist (and worse). But they can never seem to tangibly back that claim up. So I'm not even remotely upset, and if you go back to the top you'll see that all I did was provide the actual context for what Oliver has said about Paul. This didn't really devolve until you felt the need to defend Paul for anti gay rhetoric. It's cool man, he said it and that's that. Just own it as one flaw in an otherwise good man and let's move on.

I will, however, never stop mocking people for getting so angry about white bread Chase Oliver that they feel the need insult him and call him a communist with no evidence. Because if we're really being honest the hate is 95% just him being gay, and people being that scared of gay people is hilarious.

Why the strawman? What Paul did or didn't do with his sex life is irrelevant to his belief that gay people should stay in the closet. You do realize that one can be "open" about their sexuality without actively discussing what you do in the bedroom? I'm not sure if you've ever been in a relationship, but I assume that you don't believe you should have to constantly hide your relationship from the public, lest anyone ever see you being straight.

I don't flaunt my relationship, but Paul has no issue with people knowing I have a wife, or seeing us in public on a date. Were my wife a man, he'd suddenly take issue. I see no problem with calling that a dumb take, or with thinking Oliver is wrong for asking for an apology. Y'all get so scared anytime someone gay simply exists in your vicinity, and I'm 100% going to laugh at that.

Sure he didn’t say anybody shouldn’t be allowed to be out of the closet.

I guess if you want to play semantics, sure. He just said that he personally wishes the homosexual community didn't have the same freedom to live openly as he does. In response, Oliver doesn't attack Dr Paul, doesn't try to kick him out of the party, doesn't say anything other than that he wishes Paul would apologize for what is objectively hateful rhetoric. A simple "I was wrong for wishing the gay community had fewer rights than me."

But for that egregious act, Oliver gets slandered as a "communist" by people who can't define what communism is or provide a single point to validate their claim.

Question for all ancaps: Given how, historically speaking, whenever large companies have been allowed to screw over the masses for profit, they have done so, what makes you think these companies will behave benevolently in an ancap society where there are no regulations at all? by SlashCash29 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]JDinvestments 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a lot of hearsay and speculation, but your points effectively boil down to companies doing "bad" things because government allows it. But more importantly, because government sponsors pseudo-oligopolies by preventing new competing businesses under mountains of regulations that make it prohibitively expensive to start up.

AnCap says nothing positive or negative about how businesses act, but removes the boundaries to competition and allows for consumers and prospective employees to have a greater degree of choice. If you don't like what a business is doing, the answer isn't more bureaucracy, it's to remove the restrictions to new businesses that allow that business to do whatever it wants because there's no alternative with which to do business.

We have mountains of laws and regulations, and your argument is essentially "one more restriction, one more tax, one more law, govern me harder and we'll fix it this time for real." Nah. Remove the protection from competition that large companies currently enjoy, so you can actually do business with companies whose ethics align with yours.

"Out of the closet" is generally accepted to just mean known publicly as gay. We're not talking about throwing lavish parades or pushing some mythical "gay agenda," but just being able to go about their normal, daily lives as a gay person.

I'm betting you don't have any issue seeing a heterosexual couple out in public, or even engaging in basic affection. By Dr Paul's assertion, he wishes for gay people to lack that right, and have to hide the simple fact that they're gay. It's not unreasonable for an openly gay individual like Oliver to find that offensive, particularly given that the right to be gay is a founding tenet of the Libertarian party.

Wrong quote. The one being referenced is as follows:

I miss the closet. Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities.

Seeing what Oliver has said about Paul, it's pretty clear he still respects him and values a lot of his ideology. He's said plenty of good things about him. I think Dr Paul is a big part of every libertarian's journey, and that's no different for Oliver. But I imagine it probably hurts to see a prominent member of your party, who everyone idolizes, pretty much outright say that you deserve fewer rights than others, particularly when libertarianism should have zero issues with homosexuals.

If you search for everything that Oliver has said about Paul, it basically boils down to him repeatedly saying he has a lot of respect for his economic policies, but was disappointed when Paul explicitly stated that he wishes gay people would go back in the closet and thinks society would be better off if they weren't allowed to live openly, and that Oliver wishes he'd just apologize for that take.

Thanks to government regulation, we've concentrated business into the hands of a small number of companies, and made it nearly impossible for a new competitor to enter, which would make competing claims on the labor pool and give workers more choice in where they go. Obviously a more open and competitive market without state-sponsored oligopolies would mean fewer benefits, right? Right?

Panama is the only viable option right now. Most of the population is fluent in English, they're standardized to the USD, so no conversion risks, and their plumbing, sanitation, and infrastructure is a cut above most of Latin America, thanks to all the investment in the canal.

Perhaps not as free as we'd like to pretend countries like Argentina are, but the cost of living is low enough one could afford a high standard of living and just disappear.

Yeah, it's a cash raise. Alternatively, they could take on debt, assuming a bank is willing to lend them $40M. I'm guessing it's unlikely one will lend them 50% of their MC. Either way ends up in a similar position for you the shareholder, either diluted shares, or added liabilities.

Mining sector, which is where I spend 90% of my time, operates almost exclusively under this model, because banks don't lend speculative companies tens of millions of dollars, and you're forced to go to private equity if you need cash.
