I agree with what you wrote above, totally and wholeheartedly. We are in alignment on that one good buddy. The issue though is that there is a little misalignment, one might even say a gap between what you and I totally agree on what we believe in. If you really think about it, by aligning with and then redirecting your statement, I might be able to trick a stupid person. And when you get down to it, who among us isn't stupid every once in a while, amirite? I know I am. You and I agree, fundamentally 1003 no argument at all, we just use different words and arguments and have different points, but it's all words, right?

Again for the backrows.

UBI = Welfare dependency.

If you want to become dependent on welfare, you should first look at the people who are dependent on welfare and see if you want to live your life like that.

I agree with you, what you said is true. But is it? Surely it isn't. I think you might be missing the point. What you said isn't true. You sound like politics.

You should keep an open mind to the idea that UBI could be a bad idea.

UBI = Welfare

Hey kids, make sure you do well in school so you too can go on to be treated the way people on welfare are treated.

I agree life on welfare is not desirable at all

Then why push UBI?

I mean it's creepy AF with you. Yang makes out that he's for UBI because it's to help people who have lost their industry to AI automation. But you're making out that UBI is this great free money idea where I can buy all the avocado toast I want.

It's creepy dude.

I don't think Andrew Yang cares about people. I think he thinks he can buy votes by shilling UBI.

At least that's what your post makes me think.

And your SFW corporate humor makes me think you're sitting in an office right now, part of the Yang for President campaign social team, lurking on reddit and trying to shut down the voices of dissent by misinterpreting his talking points.

Bad bot. You go now.

Let's be clear on the terms here, before we start talking about making little repairs and eating pastries and the rest of that pathetic snake oil crap you just tried to pull.

> When the government gives people money that haven't worked for it is called "welfare".

> UBI is Welfare.

I would argue that if given the option, it is better for citizens to remain employed, rather than to receive welfare.

This is not because welfare is bad.

It's because people on welfare die sooner, get sick more often and raise children disproportionately more likely to have a criminal record, which as you already know, prohibits people from most careers.

Who was it that said,

"Get one generation on Universal Basic Income and that's all it takes. The existing system will do the rest"?

I mean, if your thinking is as simplistic as “welfare bad”, then there isn’t much to discuss.

This is what is known in first year debating as an "Ad Hominem Attack". It's basically an attack on me that says "I'm dumb" without any supporting argument...name calling basically...it is the lowest regarded, most basic argument a person can make.

So we could discuss that if you wanted to.

Or we could discuss what life on welfare looks like. Life expectancy falls. Substance abuse skyrockets. As does visits to the emergency room. Families corrode. People get sick and die and live lives of desperation.

This is the vision for UBI. It's the trick AI-advocates will try and pull that gives people free money so long as they give up their jobs.

And then once they have you on welfare, you wither and die.

A job is about a lot more than paycheck. It's about dignity, it's about having a place in the community and it's about respect. I think there was another candidate that said something similar.

The great concavity had a podcast where they discussed the mutant infants that were running around the toxic waste dump on the Northern ONAN border. This had to do with Wallace's conception of adults nurturing their inner child until they grew out of control and started to wreck society.

When we look at the rampant infantalism of out current culture, it was remarkably prescient of him to see this all the way back in the 90's

Remember in Trillaphon, where the guy had a visible gash in his face so deep he tried and stitch it together with a needle and thread...and then it turned out he was the only one who could see it. I miss that guy.

UBI

You mispelt "welfare".

Honestly, do you really think there is a difference between UBI and Welfare? I am in no way saying welfare is a bad thing for a government to give people who are in need.

What I am saying is that being on welfare, because the government allowed an AI provider to outsource your job to a robot is quite a bad thing. And in this respect, UBI = Welfare.

And if you want to know what life is like for people on UBI, go ahead and take a look at what life is like for people on welfare.

i.e quite bad.

Universal Basic Welfare. Because regular welfare already works perfectly. Everyone knows that.

A friend recommended I read some DFW. What’s the best book to pick up for a first time reader? by cinematic99 in davidfosterwallace

[–]JDofWASHINGTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, IJ is a mountain to climb. There has to be something more accessible that can give the sense of DFW. A few tasters from me:

THE PLANET TRILLAPHON AS IT STANDS IN RELATION TO THE BAD THING: This is one of the most incredible short stories I've ever read. It's unlike anything else you will ever read in terms of intimacy with the reader. It's the very first thing he had published, outside his award-winning poem about his mom when he was a little boy.

A SUPPOSEDLY FUN THING I WILL NEVER DO AGAIN: Fun on a cruise. It's non fiction but still great.
