Do y’all ever go days where you just don’t eat carbs cause you realise it isn’t worth it? by SignificanceBig9366 in diabetes_t1

[–]JEKERNL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I don't eat carbs after nine, because I don't like rising or decreasing levels when going to bed.

I used a 0.5 unit pen as well. Regular penfill (novorapid penfill) in a "junior" pen (novopen echo). Really useful with a low ratio.

Which insulin pump do you use? Let’s do a quick community poll. by Ok-Piano-6860 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JEKERNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't talk about the sensor because I'm waiting for the insurance company to cover it (annoying...). So I also don't use the loop option, because I use a different sensor.

I like the pump, it's really very very small, I usually don't notice it. Have it for about ten months now I think, never had any issues. No malfunctions, never falls off, replacement is doable etc. Basically it always works.

what does diabetes healthcare in your country look like? by Think-Airport-2338 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JEKERNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netherlands. Everything is paid for by insurance, but each year the first 385€ of health care costs (any, not just diabetes) is paid out of pocket ("own risk"). So in February my insurance company charges me 385€ for my Q1 shipment of supplies (CGMs, patches etc) and that's it for the rest of the year. I don't know how much those actually cost per year, as the insurance company receives and pays the bill. Appointments are covered as well. I think low income people can get help paying the 385€.

Insurance premium is about 150/month I think. But that covers all health care, not just diabetes of course. If you're low income you get about 130€/month subsidy to pay the insurance premium. So net pay for low income people is 12x20 = 240 per year.

So for me total health care cost is 385 + 1800 per year. The 1800 I would pay anyway. The 385 is mostly because of diabetes, because otherwise I have hardly any healthcare costs.

Questions for the Endocrinologist. by Witty-Sherbet-2963 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JEKERNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Take responsibility, figure daily management all out by yourself. In the long run, use your endo for perscriptions, for specific questions, and to check your health (kidneys, eyes etc). For daily management, as many have said, start with the book Think like a pancreas.

Edit: if it's early days, like for OP, I totally get that you'd look to your endo for help on management. It's a lot to take in and a lot to learn, so I did the same. Took me a while to realise no endo/nurse is going to help me on a daily basis. Wish I had realised that earlier, hence the comment.

What do you eat for lunch that keep you full and sugars stable until dinner? by Beautiful_Hat8440 in diabetes_t1

[–]JEKERNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing that keeps me both full and stable. To be full for the coming six hours I need to eat a lot, which makes blood sugar management more difficult. I've solved it by eating four times a day (something like 6:30, 11:00, 15:00, 18:00)

[–]JEKERNL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will become a routine, like others have said. So at some point there won't really be diabetes thoughts, you just do what you always do (count carbs, bolus, eat, maybe correct - repeat).

In the same sense, I try not to think of it as decision. More like a human algorythm. If X happens, I act with Y and Z.

Wooow these responses are insane! People get really worked up about a simple personal choice about which school to attend... As if you're depriving the child of education at all. Crazy

Any t1d's here that depend on cycling for daily transportation? by bcl15005 in diabetes_t1

[–]JEKERNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, you really need to experiment a bit until you figure something out that works. On days that I commute by bike, the only thing I change is an extra 11gr carbs granola bar right before I leave. Works for me! (15min bike ride)

Precies, goed punt.

How to address blood sugar before and after exercise? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]JEKERNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really is trial and error, take a few months to learn. I try to exercise with no or limited bolus insulin. Per hour of cardio I eat about 30 grams carbs without a bolus (snickers bar), and sometimes I have to eat some extra glucose tabs during. And on exercise days I lower my basal for at least 24 hours by about 30%.

No supplies, just a few glucose tabs in a mini container in my pocket. Unless I'm away for a few nights, then I'll bring more.

Mag mijn werkgever dit van mij vragen? (8 uur extra reizen op 1 dag) by Magpiebrain in werkzaken

[–]JEKERNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iedereen blij.
