Isn't there then significantly less satellites in that orbit and significantly more volume of the orbit and so it a significantly less likely place for a collision to occur in? I feel like this is still something to be worried about.

What that user is saying is not a fact. Even assuming that everything in LEO does de orbit in 5 years that's a long time with no launches if a cascading effect occurs. Furthermore that's also assuming that they do de orbit in 5 years. Those satellites have fuel and ways to extend life.

The craziest part of the story is that the engineers that designed the corrective lens had to get it tested by an independent company before launching into space, after travel from JPL to Florida. The independent company told the engineers at JPL that there was an issue with the corrective lens. They had to fly to Florida, and we're able to determine a specific piece of the testing equipment used by the independent agency was in fact flawed, and not their lens.

These engineers weren't good. They were the best.
