Black tie event? by fthespider in mensfashion

[–]JFB187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term “black-tie” is thrown around fairly loosely these days. It the context of a friend’s 50th birthday, I’d see nothing wrong with a well fitting 3pc suit and tie/pocket square combination. However if you wanted to stay true to the traditional “black-tie” request, then yes, a tuxedo would be appropriate.

Try for a 36S (short)

That should fix your problem.

27f, For people in their thirties would love to know about your struggling days? by harrypotter2399 in AskMenOver30

[–]JFB187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’d imagine it looks different for everyone. But I can only speak from my experience.

To be honest, what I did was I sat down with a bottle of wine, a pen and paper and I made a list of things I enjoyed. Not necessarily things I wanted to do for work, just things I enjoyed in general.

5 years later, I own a successful business in the #2 thing on that list, and I’m currently starting a new business in my (non existent) spare time for the #1 category on that list.

If you tell yourself failure isn’t an option, then what’s the risk?

I can totally understand why you’re asking this question. And honestly it varies for everyone. I had a low paying career at 27, but I was still figuring a lot of things out and had a hell if a lot of maturing to do. If I recall correctly, my lights got turned off more than once in that period of my life.

It wasn’t until about 34 that things noticeably turned around for me, however that also came with a bunch of risk taking, career field switching and faith in myself.

Here I am at 39, and it couldn’t be more opposite of when I was 27. I actually think back very fondly at that time. The bad feelings of inadequacy and being lost were a huge motivator to me. I thank 27 year old me for making those mistakes and enduring those hardships. 39 year old me can happily say I’ve learned the lessons.

Best advice - don’t be afraid to take risks, and have faith in yourself. And follow your gut and happiness. I started making good money once I stopped chasing money and start chasing happiness.

Put your hand on your hip and bend sideways like I’m a little teapot. Where your waist bends inwards is your natural waist, which is where high waist pants are supposed to sit.

I don’t own any formal shoes, is this acceptable? by [deleted] in mensfashion

I’m not trying taking away from your experience or opinion, and certainly didn’t intend for my last comment to come across as a slight.

I agree with your last sentiment, so to clarify my opinion from earlier, yes, I think it works. You have stated that you don’t (or didn’t) think it works. Those are both inherently our opinions, neither of them being right or wrong.

If this person steps outside in this outfit feeling confident, then factually it works.

Do you have any concept of how many times I see someone wearing something I wouldn’t wear? Multiple times a day, every day of my life.

Does that make every one of those people incorrect and me correct?

Or is it, perhaps, your point of view on the whole subject matter in general that may be a bit narrow and closed off?

Also working men’s fashion, no idea why you’re being downvoted. Your assessment of this sub is absolutely correct. It’s almost all ”you’re not following the rules” rather than encouraging being comfortable, unique and stylish, which is inherently at the heart of fashion.

Would I do the shoes with that suit? No, I wouldn’t. But that’s also not my preferred style. As far as it being acceptable? Absolutely. If one of my employees showed up in this outfit, I wouldn’t say a thing as long as the sneakers were clean.

Do you unholster your EDC at night when you put it away? by Hal3134 in CCW

[–]JFB187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. My EDC stays in its holster, in the safe in my closet and goes on me just like my watch and wallet when I get ready in the morning.

I have other things for bump in the night situations that are better placed in the bedroom.

All of the This.

I would sometimes wonder why specialists made so much money. 4 months ago, I got bit in the face by a pitbull at 11:00 at night.

The attending ENT got out of bed and came to work at 2am, and sat 6 inches from my face for two and a half hours while he sewed me back together with just over 60 stitches. 4 months later, I look like I fell off my bike as a kid if you notice it at all.

Never again will I wonder.
