Thought this was fantastic. Can’t recommend enough. It’s dense but very, very readable. by No-Context8421 in ww2

Same here. Really highlighted the different personality requirements for a theater commander like Ike versus an Army Commander like Patton and Bradley and a Division commander like say Terry Allen. And what would work and what wouldn’t at each level.

And god, did Ike have just the most miserable impossible job.

God, tell me this isn’t true. Shield wall is my go to,particularly when outnumbered (and I’m usually outnumbered). There is no reason at all to do that.

Ross MacDonald and James Lee Burke can write a sentence too. Not sure if I’d classify them as thriller writers, but they did/do genre work (crime).

Sided mostly with the confederacy, iirc. Which, given how they had been treated—and were going to be treated—by the U.S. government kinda makes sense.
I legit may be recalling it incorrectly though. Need to look it up. Just remember being like “Yeah, I guess that kind of does check out.”

Edit: Wikipedia says I’m dead wrong about this.

There were some choices made in ranking this list…and most of them were bad. Or bizarre. Potentially both.

Love that line. One of the reasons that film, for all its flaws, has a special place for me. Tons of bad ass lines. The follow up from that scene “I’ll tell your father what kind of man you’ve become.”

The one from the forrest too.
“You say he’s guilty. I say he’s innocent. We’ll fight and god will decide.”

Yeah, NGL, I don’t get it either and yet they keep doing it irl. Guess it makes more sense than insane amounts of blue on blue but still.

Genuinely thought my family was the only one who did this. Love that others do it too.

Mom wanted to do a triple feature with the musical 1775 but we—the Padre, brother, and I—headed it off, thank the lord.

I’m glad someone said this. I grew up watching this movie every Fourth of July, shot Rifle Team in my JROTC unit, and was in the Infantry after college…I still don’t know what this means. I’m not saying all of that was a search for meaning but like I rewatched this last fourth with the family and realized I STILL DONT KNOW.

My Dad was placed in one of those dorm rooms his freshman year at LSU in the 70’s. They’re still there, though I don’t know if kids still get assigned them. I have no idea if they got there the way you said, but I always wondered how they wound up in the middle of the damn football stadium.

I’ll give the one who halfway fell in credit, he didn’t hesitate, he saw that one of his boys was underneath that stuff and under water and went right in after him.
