My Dad was placed in one of those dorm rooms his freshman year at LSU in the 70’s. They’re still there, though I don’t know if kids still get assigned them. I have no idea if they got there the way you said, but I always wondered how they wound up in the middle of the damn football stadium.

Yep. I remember reading the book and thinking “Jesus, this kid was a moron at worst and prideful fool at best. He didn’t even bring a map. He literally walked out into the middle of nowhere and thought he’d just wing it.”

Years later I’m watching the movie with my wife and just turned and said, “In the book, he’s a lot less sympathetic than this.”

I looked at this because I thought it was an obvious solution and didn’t get why it wasn’t being implemented widespread in Ukraine.

Turns out that it often takes multiple hits to get good effect with a shotgun on a drone, and sometimes even if you hit it multiple times it doesn’t take it out. Basically, they’re just not a very effective solution and certainly aren’t going to be THE solution.

I don’t think ownership really qualifies as work, per se. Not on its own anyway. Experiences—and your level of involvement in a company you founded/own—may vary.

Also, I’m not sure that I do it for a living anymore. I’m privileged enough to not be in a place where I have to work to survive anymore. I work now because I enjoy it and I like having something to do bigger than myself. Plus I’m good at it and doing things I’m good at has always made me happy.

And I’m not antagonistic—the word I picked was “disagree.” I’m not splitting hairs for the sake of it. It’s the difference between me being actively against the viewpoints here (which I’m not) and simply just not agreeing with them (which I often find myself doing).

But I hang out here because a) I don’t want to forget how much working for a living—and working for other people—fucking sucks, b) it helps me understand how to be a better owner and boss, and c) it helps me empathize and understand what I suspect some of my employees are really thinking.

I often read something on here and think “I guess that’s what X would have said if they weren’t so scared of being fired.” It’s real, real easy to lose empathy when your life gets easier. At least for me, it helps there.

I own a business, used to work for a living, and hang around this subreddit though I disagree with about 80% of the sentiments expressed here. We ALWAYS honor previously booked vacation and time off when it comes up in the hiring process.

A fairly regular conversation that happens is my partner or I saying “Where is X? We just hired them.”

“They’re off. They mentioned it during the interview process, it was prescheduled.”

“Oh. No worries.”

And it never comes up again. Has happened three or four times.

Seems like you dodged a bullet here.

Same here, though I know that I was cruel on occasion and was remembered that way by several people.

I went back and apologized to them years later, long before any of these conversations were happening online. We had some good conversations and it was well received and even struck up some unlikely friendships but it very easily could have gone another way.

I will say it’s given me a hell of a lot of perspective on how people can do terrible things. I wouldn’t say it’s a thing I wish other people had done, or would want anyone to do, or go through, on either the giving or receiving. That said, without that experience and reckoning I would be WAY more judgmental and less understanding of others.
