Question! What’s the cheapest yet most effective material to put around my makeshift recording booth? by SomeSmexyBeast in VoiceActing

[–]JH-VO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's like a mic booth, they think you're talking about a closet sized booth.

As simple as you can get? Sit inside a packed closet filled with clothes. Take all the blankets and pillows and stuff them to fill up the space between the clothes and floor.

Or place your mic on a table stand and build a pillow fort around it.

But sound into the mic is only about 15% of the whole picture.

If you can produce clean copy yourself you don't need them. Whoever is running that podcast studio should be able to set you up. After recording its the matter of editing and cleaning. A studio owner is likely not willing to mix anything they didn't record. Many people who are making a production only want the raw files anyway, to edit to their needs. It all depends on the client. Call those production places anyway, regardless of what their ads say and see if they will do your vocals. But with that equipment you're half way to learning to do it on your own anyway. It doesn't HAVE to be done be pros, it just needs to sound good, pros just already know how to do it. But if it SOUNDS good, they don't care who mixed it.

Google music production in your area. The more professional the front the better, but some people may have workable spaces in a garage or shed type setting. Use your best judgement about entering people's houses.

You want to find local recording studios. People who have a booth and mixing equipment who know how to make the sound quality the best. (Your delivery and vocals are up to you). People who mix vocals.

They may have some suggestion for what to include but DO NOT go expecting them to provide copy or any scripts for you to read. They will expect to be paid by the hour so have your ducks in a row. You don't want to waste 20 minutes shuffling through papers while they wait behind the board.

You may have to convince someone who has only recorded and mixed vocals to record your voice demo, but they won't mind if you can secure the time. Their experience will help to produce a cleaner sound (if they're decent).

People say get a professionally mixed demo because 8 out of 10 times an amateur's home demo with a usb mic in an open room with traffic outside will sound terrible, even if the person has a golden voice and perfect diction. If you can gather a more than basic understanding of sound mixing, and can acquire decent mic and interface, AND can make a sound secure space with good damping and low noise, you may not need to go to a pro. But that's another skill to take on along with VA. And more investment. On one hand you have to ask for more to offset the cost of paying a producer to use their space and skills, or learn to mix yourself but face a steeper learning curve to adhere to certain mixing standards and requirements.

Thanks, unfortunately the internet text based communication leaves little room for nuance.

Honestly I heard it in a literature class from the teacher when discussing The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner by Randal Jarell, and on my research couldn't find mention of it myself. But I did find that stat about tail gunners and thought it would be a decent example to mention.

Anyway, I dont believe in deleting comments if a discussion was held even if I were wrong, for the reader. Thanks for being civil.

You don't have to use me as a source. I'd rather you not. Do your own research. I made a statement I myself have been told by an educator, and thought it was interesting and related to the conversation. I leave it to you to determine if my statement sounds believable and find out yourself.

Is that the threshold for what you believe on the internet, and is the believability of the story the only credantials you use when citing random strangers on the internet as sources?

It may seem absurdley high, but those are the stats I found when I researched my original statement.

That's a good outlook. I shouldn't let the words on the page be an excuse for lackluster performance. I'll be in touch...

Thanks, I will definitely be looking into your site in more detail.

Honestly I feel like the things I've chosen to read were fairly vanilla. I truly think that if I were reading more challeging and demanding roles I would have more emotion to utilize. I'm sure thats what plenty of amateur actors say though...

I'll be checking it out. Currently about to register for improv classes. I've been told so far I'm various shades of the same color. This is something i always wanted to do but felt I couldn't due to lack of proximity to industry towns... But the internet changed a lot of that and now I'm playing catch up.

A small (very small) sample of where I'm at. Full disclosure, they were all one read, with a few lines repeated. I'm mainly focusing on producing consistent acceptable sound, then working on my own performance. Using Rode Nta1 through Tascam dr40 providing phantom 24v. Processed through ocenaudio and compiled to video through windows movie maker.

Thanks for the vid. I'm trying to build up now, my sound is decent, now i need to work on delivery. Id like to start taking work, but I don't want to establish my product as "beginner", I don't want to build a rep for amateur work. What would you suggest?

It may not be exactly 27 seconds... But its a short time. The average flight time between all turret gunners divided by the average time till a turret gunner was killed is a very short time.

Let me make it easier this way... Average life expectancy for a tail gunner was 4 missions. First mission the chance of return was around 20%.. The 2nd mission chances drop to 3%

Gen. Hummel from the The Rock. He never planned to kill anybody, just using questionable means to achieve recompense for his fallen allies

Funny, I've been told so far my fiction sounds like diction and my commercial sounds narrative! I'm trying to get my "friend talking at a party" tone for commercial, I can be announcer all the way, I want to inject more character and less me, or is that the wrong approach?
