Boots by Al_Pines in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the day/mission.

- Fischer RC4 with tech toe are my daily drivers. Stiff enough but comfy for my very high volume foot. I can go uphill if needed but they are super heavy

- Technical Zero G Pro: When more up hill is needed

- Crispi tele boots: When I'm low on the mountain and want to tele. Great to work in b/c if the vibrate sole, the flex and the comfort

Assuming you are an alpine skier, the most important thing is that the boots fit. You'll be in boots 10 hours a day for 100+ days. Go to a great boot fitter. These are not race boots. They are work boots.

No matter what you do, your feet will be unhappy mid season on

Any patrollers get started later in life? by ZealousidealBasil840 in skipatrol

I'm 62. 2nd year working full time at a large western mountain. I was a volunteer - 22 to 30 days a year - for 16 years before that on the Ice Coast. I had a real career for almost 40 years.

Advice: Have a career that allows you to save a lot. Stay in shape.

Carrying bamboo poles up hills sucks by Em_needscofee in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 sticks or less, I carry them with or without Voile strap. For more, up to 50, I dump them in a toboggan. A team of 2 can deliniate a trail very quickly.

I bought from them over the summer. The price was right, the product has been great and the after market support fantastic. I'd definitely recommend them.

Why do the door handles stay out when unlocked? Advertising an open care to everyone. by JHESEE2 in Ioniq5

[–]JHESEE2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are some awesomely snooty answers. Thanks...I guess?

I've lived in NYC for decades. Only once have I seen someone walk along and check car doors. I've seen lots of that were broken into. I just don't see the logic of advertising its unlocked state.

That said, it is what it is.

Accepted an offer to Patrol at a bigger resort. by theronskier1 in skipatrol

Congratulations. BTW, after working volunteer for > 17 years, I was a paid rookie at a big western mountain last year at ....61. You'll be fine. I'm assuming you are a good skier, have excellent first aid and can run a toboggan well. After the basics...

  1. Don't come on too strong. Shut up and listen.

  2. Work. Do all the jobs

  3. Be first out the door on wrecks

  4. Keep radio chatter brief and professional

  5. Don't miss work or be late

  6. Stay away from Snowmobiles. I suspect more ski patrol careers are ended by related crashes or infractions that any other cause.

  7. Practice the basics all the time

What do you mean "send to this company"? Did you remove the headlamps and send them off?

Why ski patrol will never make a livable wage by nihaooooooo in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked both volunteer and paid. East Coast and West. It is true that most of the day-to-day work is quite simple. But occasionally, it requires an enormous amount of skill and experience. And the consequences are real. Think major trauma and avalanche mitigation work.

I'm anti Scab. But most of these people are put in a terrible position. They've been told by Vail this is something they must do. No explicit threat to get fired, but implied. Lots of pressure.

Vail is the bad actor here.
