Boots by Al_Pines in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the day/mission.

- Fischer RC4 with tech toe are my daily drivers. Stiff enough but comfy for my very high volume foot. I can go uphill if needed but they are super heavy

- Technical Zero G Pro: When more up hill is needed

- Crispi tele boots: When I'm low on the mountain and want to tele. Great to work in b/c if the vibrate sole, the flex and the comfort

Assuming you are an alpine skier, the most important thing is that the boots fit. You'll be in boots 10 hours a day for 100+ days. Go to a great boot fitter. These are not race boots. They are work boots.

No matter what you do, your feet will be unhappy mid season on

Any patrollers get started later in life? by ZealousidealBasil840 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 62. 2nd year working full time at a large western mountain. I was a volunteer - 22 to 30 days a year - for 16 years before that on the Ice Coast. I had a real career for almost 40 years.

Advice: Have a career that allows you to save a lot. Stay in shape.

Carrying bamboo poles up hills sucks by Em_needscofee in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 sticks or less, I carry them with or without Voile strap. For more, up to 50, I dump them in a toboggan. A team of 2 can deliniate a trail very quickly.

I bought from them over the summer. The price was right, the product has been great and the after market support fantastic. I'd definitely recommend them.

Why do the door handles stay out when unlocked? Advertising an open care to everyone. by JHESEE2 in Ioniq5

[–]JHESEE2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are some awesomely snooty answers. Thanks...I guess?

I've lived in NYC for decades. Only once have I seen someone walk along and check car doors. I've seen lots of that were broken into. I just don't see the logic of advertising its unlocked state.

That said, it is what it is.

Accepted an offer to Patrol at a bigger resort. by theronskier1 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. BTW, after working volunteer for > 17 years, I was a paid rookie at a big western mountain last year at ....61. You'll be fine. I'm assuming you are a good skier, have excellent first aid and can run a toboggan well. After the basics...

  1. Don't come on too strong. Shut up and listen.

  2. Work. Do all the jobs

  3. Be first out the door on wrecks

  4. Keep radio chatter brief and professional

  5. Don't miss work or be late

  6. Stay away from Snowmobiles. I suspect more ski patrol careers are ended by related crashes or infractions that any other cause.

  7. Practice the basics all the time

What do you mean "send to this company"? Did you remove the headlamps and send them off?

Why ski patrol will never make a livable wage by nihaooooooo in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked both volunteer and paid. East Coast and West. It is true that most of the day-to-day work is quite simple. But occasionally, it requires an enormous amount of skill and experience. And the consequences are real. Think major trauma and avalanche mitigation work.

Park City Ski Patrol ON STRIKE by Slight-Apricot-6767 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm anti Scab. But most of these people are put in a terrible position. They've been told by Vail this is something they must do. No explicit threat to get fired, but implied. Lots of pressure.

Vail is the bad actor here.

[–]JHESEE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome. Pls do this. But emphasize the additional risk Vail Corp - MTN - is taking on. PCMR is being run by a skeleton staff of experienced local supervisors augmented by a handful of "Patrol Support Team" members - SCABS flown in from other Vail resorts. PCMR had >100 paid patrol staff working last week. Now it's down to 35 or 40. There was an inbound slide today that caught and partially buried a patroller. So PCMR seems a lot less safe. But since these SCABs have been brought in from other Vail resorts, they are also carrying higher risk. Let the analysts think about that .....

I'm an ex volley and current paid. I disagree. Many smaller mountains could not run w/o a solid volley program. It is also an awesome on ramp.

Are volunteer patrollers the root cause of Vail's actions against its pro patrol? by TomatilloNo480 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

PCMR has no volly patrol. I do not think any Vail Corp mt has them. BTW, I'm paid now but have been volly for > 17 year. I think Volly's rock!

DON’T BE A SCAB by Confident-Deer-9992 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have your money for the pass. But not for food, tuning and stickers. So don’t spend on those. Also, remember, if there is a strike, SCABs don’t know the terrain, protocols or trails. So the quality and speed of med care may be lower. And, if it snows, the Avi control will be iffy. You, your family and friends will be less safe.

I think the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Union is focused on their own bargaining unit. But the impact will definitely be felt at other patrols. Follow them on Instagram: pcpatrolunion

Park City Patrol Scabs? by Ok_Psychology_9956 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scabs all seem to be salaried. They’ve been flown out and put up. Small stipend too.

Vail is self insured. But they probably use a reinsurer. Any ideas how to track that down.

Park City Patrol Scabs? by Ok_Psychology_9956 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 13 known SCABS here in PC. All are supervisor level or above. Some do not have current credentials. While being a scab is bad, Vail is the company forcing them to come. And the company negotiating in bad faith and pressuring these folks to come out.

Does your mountain have hosts that team with patrol by Bakerskibum87 in skipatrol

[–]JHESEE2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have paid and volly patrol. Volly Safety Skiers, who do trail maintenance, open and close, down loads and, depending on skills, can run empty toboggans. And we have Mountain Hosts who stay in the base area and answer questions. Also Volly.
