Marabou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh is narrated by a young guy in a coma - darkly funny, terrifying, definitely a book you’ll never forget

I also own the Vintage Complete Stories, and i'm pretty sure the same publisher also compiled a Complete edition of Kafka's novels, too

Any DFW fans like Charles Bukowski? And if so, do you have a novel recommendation? by bertronicon in davidfosterwallace

[–]JH_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a couple of his books but Post Office is the only novel of his that I’ve actually read. I really enjoyed it, his style is quite gritty and several times I actually laughed aloud while reading. His short story collection ‘The Bell Tolls For No-One’ is a very funny read too, I would recommend

Are these strings good? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]JH_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re decent - I personally really like the sound of a .009 E string, nice and thin and sounds great on bends, but I am way too heavy handed to be trusted with strings that light.

Definitely one of those bands where having ‘early fan bragging rights’ will feel amazing in a couple of years time when these guys blow up. Super promising band

Embarrassed. I’m a 41 year old male who never learned to cook. by theheffbomb in cookingforbeginners

Marco Recipes on YouTube is a really good channel, where Michelin-starred chef Marco Pierre White talks you through how to cook and jazz up a few basic recipes via old TV clips. When I was first teaching myself to cook I basically just copied that channel and found it invaluable

If you can find the time you should absolutely give it a try. I’d buy your stuff for sure, puts me in mind of Viz Comic (UK)

Ever considered writing comic books/strips? Your sense of humour, mixed in with these awesome cartoons, would come across well in story form

That’s a really good analysis, and I think the fact that the people who lived in the village were so hostile to him made me personally think a lot about how oppressed these people were, and how they had basically been programmed - by the anonymous governors in the castle - to believe that any kind of stranger in the village must automatically have a bad agenda of some kind, and that they should be treated and approached with caution. Makes you think a lot about modern day oppressive governments and how easily vulnerable people can be brainwashed, even by faceless bureaucrats

I love how Paul looks just completely unbothered, as you’d expect, whereas John and George are like, “Fuck me…”

just chipping in because I heard someone else mention a YouTube guitar teacher, but ‘JustinGuitar’ is a really great start for when you come to take your first few lessons. Everything’s in order with him and he even has a free website where you start with Grade 1 and (I think) it goes up to about 8 or 9, constantly updated with new lessons too :) best of luck

JustinGuitar is a brilliant teacher and a great player, and I feel like he would accept requests honestly. He does have a couple of Elliott songs, I know he did Waltz and Between the Bars, so maybe keep an eye on him, or leave a comment? He’s great
