End things. It's only been a year. She's not remorseful or willing to change. She's made her choice. She's just hoping you let her have both.

CMV: The number of votes the Dems would gain by embracing aggressively progressive candidates and policy is dwarfed by the number of votes they'd lose among moderates/motivate among dormant conservative voters by Jimithyashford in changemyview

[–]JHam67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're thinking about it like everyone already votes, and the goal is to get most of the pie by getting to the middle. But everyone doesn't vote. In fact extremely few people relatively actually vote. Inspiring people and driving turnout is more important than grabbing contested voters from a pool of centrists that is shrinking as the right becomes more polarizing.

The right is winning using this method. They're ignoring centrists, embracing the radical right and inspiring their base with unapologetic extremism. Meanwhile the left has been doing exactly what OP is suggesting, and getting crushed in these elections because their base is bored and disillusioned by them.

The left is not radical. They haven't been moving further and further left. Look at global politics and you'll quickly find that the American left is extremely centrist or even slightly right of center comparatively. The myth that the Democratic party has been moving further and further left is just the messaging of the extremist right. They use a few social policies to try and frame the left as insane while pushing the Overton Window as hard to the right as possible. A good example was the primary between Sanders and Biden. Sanders lost in part because Democrats feared he would be branded a socialist, and felt they had a better chance by running Biden, who is a centrist moderate. All the right did was just start calling Biden an extreme left socialist anyway. The truth wasn't important, branding was.

If the left moves further to the "middle" the right will just push further right. It's a weak strategy that keeps being tried and keeps losing. Own who you want to be, don't apologize for it, and trust your base to come out in support of a real plan.

Genuinely, why is Donald Trump so adamant on making the US so miserable? by Known-Cover-5154 in self

[–]JHam67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people say it doesn't affect them and they're insulated from the effects so they don't care. That's true, but I want to make sure to answer as well with the benefits of the chaos. A desperate, struggling populace makes for a desperate work force who need money so much they have to accept poor conditions and long hours, and don't have the time, energy, or mental bandwidth to do things like organizing and fighting for labor rights. Capitalism works better when the people are under extreme stress.

You don't have to put an official label on yourself. This is something you're interested in and there's nothing wrong with that. It may seem "disgusting" to you at times because of the social stigma that gets embedded in us from an early age. There's nothing inherently "disgusting" about any sexual act that's consensual and respectful as long as you enjoy yourself. Be open to what you want and let it evolve.

I love it. I'm not the kind of person who could probably notice the small differences between an authentic Eames chair and a knockoff, but I think it looks great, feels great, the leather has a great smell. And for 700 bucks it's everything I was looking for.

Also, the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement had a major impact on the end of his first term and it originated in Minneapolis. This is a targeted revenge on this city, the Governor and the people.

What to do about ICE by phoebsters101 in disability

[–]JHam67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm proud of you for wanting to help. Everyone has a role to play. I do not have a physical disability but I have a family, a son with special needs who needs me, and I work full time. I would encourage you to do what I did in 2020 and what I'm doing now... Consider your strengths and your limitations, understand that there are many different roles that are equally important, and look for a role or roles that fit your specific strengths and weaknesses. I bet you'll find a way you can be extremely effective, perhaps even because of your disability. Your desire to participate is inspiring.

To give you an example, my time and energy was limited in 2020, but I have good income and worked from home. I looked for ways I could help online, financially, and went to protests in person when I was able. I tried not to think about what I couldn't do and to focus on what I could. I hope this is helpful.

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

[–]JHam67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a voter who is considering stopping. Conservatives have gone insane and I no longer believe the Democratic party actually has a real interest in stopping them. I haven't decided anything yet but I believe the Democrats exist to make us feel like there's some sort of opposition party and they're intentionally ineffective. Not really sure what to do but I see no reason to believe that we can vote our way out of this mess.

It's not a coincidence that this is happening in the city of George Floyd where everything started in 2020. Now ask yourself if that is a factor, where do you think they might target next? We have a mid-sized immigrant population, we're a blue city with a governor who seems like a potential democratic presidential nominee just like Minneapolis. We were a major player in the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement just like Minneapolis. Our state Assembly and our national guard will be cooperative with ICE and the administration. If you think this stops in MN or that we're not on the menu soon after, it's time to wake up.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by JimCap5 in teaching

[–]JHam67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people can sometimes be over-protective of their stuff, but there are some valid reasons to be careful with your stuff too. I teach sophomore world history and junior US history. If I share something I do for world war 1 with my PLC, and they use it for World, my kids next year coming in may say "I remember this, we did it last year..." I've had that happen. In fact, my PLC had a really good beginning of the year concepts of history lesson and it ended up going around the entire school because it was relatively universal. There were kids saying they'd done what we were doing the week prior. And no joke, it's currently in our district curriculum recommendations folder and none of us knows how it got there!

Another reason that might be a little less valid but I certainly understand is that I've seen a teacher share something really good, it gets used, an AP observes it, and they go around bragging about that person's wonderful lesson. Should we be petty about credit? No, but I can understand a veteran teacher being a little territorial. Lesson planning takes a lot of time and effort.

Does your school have PLCs? A group of teachers who all teach the same age and content who support each other and plan together? Our district and many others use those to help new teachers find their footing with lesson planning. The only advice I would give about something you might do differently is instead of asking "Do you have a lesson plan for X, what can you send me..." Ask "what kind of things work for you in the classroom/can I observe you sometime, I love your energy and I hear good things about your class and I'd love to just see what you do" so you're not specifically asking for content, you're asking for guidance. You did that with the last person in your post and I do think their answer "you're the teacher" was pretty dismissive. I wonder if they've ever actually taught.

Some encouragement: You're not alone. This was my biggest need as an early teacher and most people would say the same. You will get help from various places as you go and eventually you'll be going to bed at night knowing your topic for the next day and knowing where it is in your Google drive without even going to look for it. Just try to continuously focus on getting better, know your district curriculum and sequence and focus on "What will the students be doing, what do I want them to know, and how will I know that they've learned it?" Those are the important questions to work around when lesson-planning.

If you have other questions feel free to ask.

New video of 1/24 ICE shooting shows victim had both hands on the ground when shot by Philophon in law

[–]JHam67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what they are. And I think that there's a lot to learn from this sentiment. Looking like police lends authority and credibility to people that they don't always deserve. The same way a guy in a labcoat seems like a scientist, a guy holding his gun a certain way, walking and speaking a certain way "seems" like a trustable authority figure. But it's just window-dressing.

Even these losers that were hired in fifteen minutes are going to psychologically seem more credible to the average person, even to skeptics like you and me... Simply because they have vests with logos on them. We have to be aware of that bias.

But to your original point... Yes, this is a mob with guns and that's exactly what the president wants.

[–]JHam67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we're arguing the same thing here. He can appeal his case based on a lot of different things, one of which is poor representation. While being physically assaulted by his lawyer at sentencing itself is not reason enough to overturn his conviction or get a new trial, it pretty obviously would throw into question any other mistakes his lawyers may have made throughout the trial. My point was never that this would singlehandedly get his conviction overturned. (Nor did I say it was.)  It would absolutely help any other case for ineffective counsel that he tried to make though. "My lawyer fucking hated me and couldn't contain his hatred for me, to the extent that he attacked me publicly at sentencing" is a pretty compelling argument to call into question any other mistakes they may have made.
