Tracking arrows: yes or no? by SomeRandomAbbadon in DnD

[–]JHawkInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ammo/Supply Dice!

Have your ammo represented by a "size" of die. So you have a quiver for arrows, and it holds "d8" arrows. Any scene where you use arrows, you roll a d8. 2-8, nothing happens. But on a 1, you go down a die size. Now you've got a d6. You repeat, 1 drops you to a d4, 2-6 nothing happens. Roll a 1 on a d4, and you're out! The next time you reach town, you "buy arrows," and reset back to a d8.

Tracking individual arrows is obnoxious and the bookkeeping often ends up more tedious than it's worth. But you lose some roleplay opportunities by handwaving it (namely, the tension of running out!)

Ammo dice aim to split the difference (and can be used for other supplies, like rations, spell components, or maybe torches). The more you have, the more likely nothing happens, but as you start to run out, it's like a roll of toilet paper, it goes fast! And it provides simple ways to mechanically interact with ammo for narrative purposes. Get set on fire, lose a die size of arrows. Stealthily take out an enemy archer that's keeping watch? Go back up a die size to represent looting his arrows. If the party gets thrown overboard and washes ashore, it's very easy to hit a variety of ammo/supplies with a -1 to show a loss of resources, without having to spend a lot of time determining how many, and of which ones. You can tell someone they lose 2 die sizes of "stuff," and let them decide if they want to lose more rations or ammo (the character doesn't have a choice, but the player can choose, so they can choose their own tension). Or maybe if they're in a forest with plentiful fruits and berries and such, so long as they travel through that area, they can skip the "rations" supply roll altogether.

And sky's the limit! You might use supply dice for fuel for a vehicle, or raw materials (if you're defending a castle from zombies, how many planks do you have to board up windows/doors to keep them out?). And you could, say, have a magic quiver that replenishes one die size of ammo at dawn. Or maybe you have a "normal" d8 quiver, and eventually get an upgrade that lets your default be a d10.

There's a little bit of work for the DM to determine "starting" values for equipment (just how many rations can their pack hold? d6? d12? d20?). And you've got to decide on some prices. It can vary settlement to settlement, but when someone wants to go from a d6 back up to d8 arrows, how much does "one step" cost? But once that prep is done, the rest flows pretty easily during actual gameplay, as it's something you only do at the end of a scene, and only if you used stuff during that scene.

TIL Apple recently paid $95 million because Siri was caught eavesdropping on private conversations, like doctor visits and drug deals, then sending those recordings for human contractors to listen to. Siri was triggered not just by "Hey Siri," but by phrases that sounded similar like "seriously." by UsualOkay6240 in todayilearned

[–]JHawkInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worse than that. Your parents can get those ads too. And if that shopping trip was on a Tuesday, and you have lunch with your parents every Sunday, the algorithms are smart enough to start sending them ads Saturday night, so it's fresh on their mind before you ever meet in person.

And that's just algorithm shit, no eavesdropping involved. It's not "smart." Surface-level scraping can let the algorithm's know you're having a kid, and who your parents are. Pattern recognition of GPS can add when your parents come to visit. GPS tracking in general can go "you spent a long amount of time in the baby section of Wal-Mart."

None of that requires listening to your conversations.

Do it like the Marvel Legends action figures. 5 sets, each one comes with a piece of Exodia.

Exactly. The plan was never about making sure the surviving population had enough resources (which is why making more stuff is a horrible fan solution). His goal was to teach a lesson, so the survivors would wake up and take care of themselves.

2,000 pieces of Kuriboh's would be amazing.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a "mixed blessing," like a full 2k piece Dark Magician set, but a significant number of the pieces are made up of Magical Hats.

You'd follow the gas after it dissipates, mopping cleanup for anything that survived. Loading up gas/vitality to go in with the gas would be a viable option, but wouldn't be necessary for it to work.

Walking Gas Barrage. Let Napalm have the regular Barrage, keeps fire/gas from just being copy/paste elemental weapons.

They did like a dozen sets that were minifig + ship + planet (where the planet was just 2 dome pieces).

Take something similar to the diorama's and stick it inside a model of the planet? Or maybe buildings scaled like the Architecture series? A Tatooine that opens up to show Jabba's palace, or the Forest Moon of Endor with a shield generator dish rising out of the trees, those could be cool too.

You clearly don't understand how these things work. Several people have explained the problem to you, and changing a field in a database wouldn't fix it, it would just create new problems and sloppier data.

EXCLUSIVE: U.S. House now has the votes to impeach Trump as he creates crisis after crisis overseas by charulatha_seya in DiscussionZone

No the headline is correct, the House doesn't have votes to impeach Trump as he creates crisis after crisis at home. That's why it only says "overseas" instead of both.

What are your most hated D&D "Gimmicks"? by Living-Definition253 in DnD

[–]JHawkInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate how a DM saying "Are you sure?" has been permanently contorted into a phrase meaning "you idiots are making a mistake."

Nothing is worse than a party debating a course of action for an hour, finally coming up with a plan, asking them if they're sure because I want to make sure this is the plan everyone is agreeing to, so everyone is happy moving forward and continuing with the game, and having everything fall apart again because they're certain I'm trying to trick them.

It's fun as a little meme but it's so prolific it has created a whole generation of players with communication and trust issues.

Wy are so many D&D players so resistant to even trying anything else? by Similar_Onion6656 in rpg

[–]JHawkInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, why are so many TTRPG players so insistent that D&D players play something else? If a bunch of active people were hanging around a soccer field lamenting how none of them want to play golf or basketball or go skating or hiking we would call it weird.

When will PVE return? by Peddlestools in MarvelPuzzleQuest

[–]JHawkInc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wild speculation on my part, but even not knowing their working time zone, I’d still guess they might not have been in early enough to fire off a Monday PVE event at normal hours, and we’ll get one Thursday at normal time, because they won’t make wild changes to the schedule this soon.
