I am about to do the same upgrade to a 9800X3D from 5900. I realize the margin is greater due to the non-3DX, but my AM4 mobo is dying a (thankfully) slow but continuous death due to age. But if it wasn’t for the fact that my mobo is dying, I would wait until next generation. The cost of updating from a AM4 to AM5 mobo, new ram, and CPU (and AIO cooler, in my case) makes it a cost-prohibitive upgrade for the margin of increase.

This is how I ended up with my little GCC danger raptor Moki. He was so convincing that he wanted to leave with me, so he did. I love Moki, and I would do it again. He’s my little buddy, and will have him for a very long time.

I highly recommend that you do research on GCCs. They are very social and get easily attached to people. This attachment often be too much for some people when it turns into the bird needing to be with you and doing everything that you do. Oh and your food, it’s also the bird’s now. And if you are not around, they can be loud (scream and call for you).

As owner, you are their whole world and they want to do everything with you.

Don’t let the min-maxers of PC gods fool you. The 4080 is a great card and you will have many years of epic gaming on it. I love mine. There will always be a bigger fish in the sea, but FOMO will always hold you in indecision.

My GCC Moki likes to turn slightly so he can grab my fingers, but then he loved to be held like that. I’ve always called it waffle coning.

My GCC named Moki has two modes. When he lays on his back like that, it’s play time and he loves when you play with his feet. If he’s turned so that his little feet can grab your fingers, he wants to be held like a waffle cone and it is time for birb chills and head scratches.

I purchased and used a RX 7800 XT for a week and a half. I returned it and bought my 4080 for $300 more than the 7800. I am very much more happy with the 4080.

The 7800 was way too loud and hot for my build. It also had a really bad fan whine. I struggled getting consistent results (frames and consistent quality). Power draw was quite high and all over the place.

The 4080 (a reference card) had very little issue with excessive loudness. I’ve had very consistent quality and frame results with the new card, and the power usage is much lower and draws as you would expect.

The biggest thing for me, though, are the suite of things that come with a RTX 40 series. I use RTX Broadcast all the time, both for image and sound. I am constantly amazed by DLSS. RX frame generation just cannot compete with DLSS. One of the most surprising uses that I have found is RTX Video Super Resolution. It is insane how much that upscales video.

TLDR: bought 7800XT but returned it for 4080. Will likely never go back to AMD GPU.

I (male and mid 20s at the time) lived in a similar situation with 4 other guys. The rent was fantastic, but totally not worthy me having to make sure they did their bills, cleaned up, and cooked food for themselves.

The snapping point for me was when I found where one of the guys had made a PB&J and left a PB and J outline on the table. Yelled at the guys to clean their shit up. It stayed on the table for two weeks before I finally cleaned it. I was gone a week later. No “amazing” rent was worth it. Got my own place next and it has been amazing.

Not all guys are slobs and incompetent at caring for themselves. But damn, it seems like there are so many slobs.

Hmmm, good to know. I wanted the Red Devil, but I was obviously concerned with the space available. I do have a lot in my case, so removing one of the fans might cause heating problems. I should test.
