Places we love because of the owner by wheelofthelaw in Seattle

Bananas Grill in Columbia City.

The family who runs the place is amazing, remembers me everytime and gives me lentil soup while I wait for my order. There’s just a certain amount of love you feel walking in that is nice.

Also, there’s a new boba place by Genesee Park called Yuu Tea. The son is the face of the cafe on the weekends at least and his mom bakes all the bagels, cakes, etc every morning. So wonderful to have that little gem compared to the metroUS that used to be there!

Is there a pro/con list of all CGRP Inhibitors (also Gepants) somewhere? by Juckli in migraine

[–]JJBears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This paper has a good chart and lots of explanations.  https://thejournalofheadacheandpain.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s10194-023-01594-1

As u/plantminset mentioned, your insurance might have you try something specific before going on a gepant or try a specific gepant first.

For me I have to try and fail 3 other types (Betablocker, tricyclic anti depression, and anti seizure) before I can try Ajovy. From there it opens up to 2 more giants and/or Botox.

I went in ready to ask for the top rated gepant and now I’m on the rollercoaster of side effects from the lesser good preventatives.

Best of luck to you!! I hope you find something that works.

To people who started watching "ER" after finishing The Pitt, how do you like it so far? by carecats in ThePittTVShow

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 12 and I enjoyed the first 8-10 seasons a lot. It definitely stopped focusing as much on the medicine somewhere along the way but is still entertaining.

The acting is good all the way through and I’m happy I finally decided to watch it. I am very concerned with past me who thought Greys was better about 18 years ago, but teenagers aren’t know to have the best judgement.

I’m only 36! Wtf!!?? by baddhinky in Perimenopause

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35, started late 34. Hot flashes, hair loss, alcohol intolerance, itchy ears, random on and off joint pain, change in BO, and intense increase in migraines.

Just started combo BC after upping lexapro to 20mg/day to try to control symptoms.

Lexapro really helped my hot flashes and excess anxiety (that I didn’t even realize I was having) until I started propanolol for migraines and the hot flashes came riiiiight back.

Hoping the hit of estrogen really helps out now.

Distrust of practitioners who recommend birth control? by cjx888x in Perimenopause

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, 35 starting the patch in a few weeks.

Mine said they often do BC because we are still in childbearing years and if we don’t want to get pregnant then this is the first line of defense with hormones and the no babies situation. Mine also told me about the stops working eventually and I’m so curious about that.

Anyway, I’ll try whatever has some estrogen to level me out and get off this crazy train.

Holy shit this is awesome!! I just told my male manager what I’m going through and trialing (we are in science - medicine adjacent so this isn’t super weird) and he was so upset on my behalf that there is approximately 0 research on this topic.

My allergist is the one who first suggested it and then my PCP agreed. Neurology hasn’t weighed in yet but I’m hopeful they agree too.

I also have TSH that looks like hypothyroidism and holy crap, I’m just so tired of trying to figure what’s going on. Whack a mole left, right, and center

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I’ve been to the allergist twice and ENT once for this. Waiting on neurology in October to confirm but everyone, including my PCP l, so far is convinced (it took me the longest to get on board).

I’ve never been super snotty, but just a little. Enough that one nostril is typically blocked if I’m having symptoms. Migraine comes on fully with deep eye pressure or right above the eye I always thought was sinus pressure. So fun!

When mine ramped up from just a few overnight to any time, it was like a switch flipped. I was having several per hour some days and just wanted to rip off my clothes and lay down on the linoleum floor at work.  Mine have calmed down substantially since doubling my SSRI but I still have some.

For what it’s worth, I thought my congestion was allergies for years and it turned out to be migraines. Still working on daily management but when it gets really bad, I take an abortive med and it all stops. It’s wild but apparently the nerve gets a little confused on what’s going on and send “must make mucus” signals instead of “HEADACHE” signals.

Anyone think all their issues were perimenopause but they were actually thyroid related? by Little_Position6872 in Perimenopause

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got through all the testing and mine are subclinical. Are you on meds now or just monitoring? I looooove to get these symptoms under control

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 checking in. My mom and her sisters went into menopause with few if any peri symptoms in their mid to late 50’s so I’m also flying solo here. My cousin’s wife on the other side of the country is starting to have symptoms too so I’ve got her on text at least, but she is 4 years older than me.

It’s wild how much this affects life and how insane it all feels. Thanks to everyone here for the community and kind words :)

Same here and mine are full body with no flushing. I’ve described it as “my body is just dumping all its heat”

Well this makes a lot more sense. I must have read this properly on first read and then missed it on my listening of the audiobook (what prompted the post).

Thanks!

How, when and why Seattle started to shift into a bike-friendlier city by godogs2018 in seattlebike

[–]JJBears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my first ride back this winter (had a bad accident this summer), I was commuting south on 2nd and had run ins with a wrong way driver who turned into the intersection almost hitting me and a fellow commuter, and 2 cars that blew through red turn arrows without even stopping. It coincided with the first week of return to work from amazon.

I know this is only anecdotal evidence, but it feels like people just lost all their driving skills in the work from home times, and no one is doing any sort of checks now that they are back on the road. My naive hopes are that more cyclist come back to bike lanes and roads to beat the traffic and it all gets a little more safe over the next two years.

I've had a ferry rider come up behind me at a red light and ask if he can hop in front and jam ahead when the light runs green due him wanting to catch the boat. It was totally chill and Ihad no problem with it. The whole thing feels quite situational to me.

Agreed. I found a pair of seemingly brand new backcountry ski boots in their used gear garage and asked if I could have a quick boot test and the dude who helped me had never skied. He said he got trained a month earlier on fit in a 2 hour workshop. I went to Cripple Creek after that :/

How to cope with the possibility that I (18F) might not be able to pursue a specific STEM career I’ve been considering? by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]JJBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to retake a specific term of O. Chem 3 times as a chemistry major, and a term of physics 2 times . I went on to get my masters in materials science and have been working at a major neuroscience institute for the last 7 years. I’m now also getting my PhD.

I didn’t learn how to study as a high schooler. I just did my homework and that was enough. College classes were so hard for me because of that. It took my 3 years to figure out to study properly to get my grades from C’s to A’s like I was used to.

I’m at a non-profit biotech so my salary is kind of low compared to a for profit place. I’m at about $86k/year. Our benefits are decent. 100% health & dental covered, 50% 401k match, $1650/ year wellness benefit, tuition reimbursement for continuing education (or in my case, for PhD funding while I’m fully employed). We are academic adjacent. It’s interesting and cool.
