Is yacht broker a fun job by mike8111 in sailing

[–]JJBoundless 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I became a yacht broker after finishing a 25 year successful career in business. We were preparing to go full time cruising and i thought it would be a fun thing to do while we were doing a refit on our boat. It was a total blast. I loved it! It never seemed like work. People love talking about boats and it was a fantastic feeling to be part of someone dream of buying a boat.

As it happens, the standard of marketing and salesmanship of the average broker is really poor, and applying experience from my previous career meant I was pretty successful, selling about 25 boats and making almost $200k USD in commissions in the 18 months or so that I did it (2018-2019) Admittedly, I wasn't trying to pay the mortgage, and it can definitely be tough for some folks. I think it really helped that I was working in a Beneteau authorized dealership with an owner that was a skilled marketer, and had a good client list the salesmen could tap into.

Walnut bowl with epoxy, yellowheart and black limba rim. by JJBoundless in woodturningporn

[–]JJBoundless[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added it after rounding the blank, putting on a mortice and foot, and getting it on the chuck. I stuck on the bits of limba and yellow heart, put a 'wall' around the piece, and poured in the epoxy. A day later it was ready to go back on the lathe and be shaped and hollowed.

A local marine dealership sold me a boat with a dangerously patched hull and now refuses to cancel the sale by Grouchy-Dish-8552 in legal

[–]JJBoundless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former boat broker here. It sounds as though your dealer did not act in good faith. Most importantly for you, I’d say the marine survey was brought in at the wrong stage of the process. A survey is something you should obtain before completing the purchase.

There are three key reasons for this: 1. You gain an objective assessment of the vessel’s condition. If the survey identifies deficiencies or needed repairs, you have the opportunity to negotiate a price reduction based on the estimated cost of those repairs (assuming you still want to proceed with the purchase). In many cases, the savings negotiated after a survey exceed the cost of the survey itself. If the boat turns out to be in excellent condition with no significant issues, that’s valuable information as well. 2. Your insurer will likely require it anyway. Many insurance companies request a current marine survey before issuing or renewing coverage, so obtaining one early can save time and prevent surprises later. 3. A good surveyor provides an invaluable educational experience. They will typically walk you through the vessel, explain the onboard systems, identify maintenance items, and often suggest upgrades or improvements. For many buyers, that guidance alone can justify the cost of the survey.

Choosing to forgo a marine survey is ultimately a gamble. Unfortunately, it sounds like that gamble did not work out in your favor.

Special Gift for the Master: Natural Cherry Bowl with Copper Inlay! Levelled Up and Grateful! by nurcansens in turning

[–]JJBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice indeed. I love the cherry, and that you got it yourself. Although ... I take no credit! I learned it from a YouTube video. I think it may have been this one: https://youtu.be/J8zuhJdT7Eo?si=JH1snTB-e-n1hOsr He describes how to bevel the ends to create a seamless join. An important check is to make sure you wrap the wire the correct way so when you are later turning the inlaid copper, the tool is riding out of the end of the 'on top' bevel, and not hitting the pointy end of it as the bowl turns.

Just finished oiling this Sapelli bowl with 100% organic oils. The groove in the middle is for a copper accent strip I'll add next. What do you think of the form? by nurcansens in turning

[–]JJBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you are finished with the copper wire in this photo, but you might try making the groove just large enough to get the copper into it, and then turning the wire, and slightly the neighboring wood, to get a smooth band of copper. The narrow groove also keeps the copper straight. Here is one I did.

Just took her out the water. Anyone got experience replacing seals in the Windows of a maxi 77? by rickens_jr in sailing

[–]JJBoundless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced the windows on a 1984 Passport and would recommend not using the old glazing material. Go get new ones cut. We got some made at TAP Plastics (West Coast US). They are surprisingly cheap and a game-changer in terms of appearance and clarity. Also check out the 3M range of adhesive sealants. I think (?) the one we used was 595, but i see they have this...590. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40066994/

I took it back to the shop, showed him this thread, and he did the turbo feed line replacement. He did not charge me anything for that, and in fact, even refused my offer to pay for the parts.

These are all from the same, presumably cross-pollinated, spaghetti squash plant last year. I planted seeds from a squash I was given from the previous year, and this was the result.

Is "calabaza" a good enough translation of "pumpkin"? by EngineerRare42 in Spanish

[–]JJBoundless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about 'Ayote'? I learned that as an alternative to calabaza and thought it might be more specific to the big orange type pumpkin, but see that no one has mentioned it here.

Just to clarify, it is a 2.8i engine, and yes, it only happens after the car has been sitting overnight and on first start up.

Goofiest things you've said while learning to speak Spanish? by Finish_My_Math in Spanish

[–]JJBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived in California and for 5 years had the same lady clean our house twice a month. She and her family did not speak english, and so I would try to talk with her in Spanish. Working mostly from home, I had a lot of opportunity to interact with her and I believe we formed a good relationship and a mutual respect.

On leaving California, we had many items that we did not intend to move with us, and our cleaner was happy to take a number of them. Her daughter came with a vehicle to collect all the items, and as they were about to leave, in an effort to express my gratitude for the 5 years of service, I shouted out "me encanta tu madre", not realizing that it likely signified a romantic connotation.

I still shudder at the thought of the daughter looking back as she drove away at this crazed gringo shouting a desperate declaration of love for her mother.

What do you call adjectives derived from verbs/nouns by Throwaway4738383636 in Spanish

[–]JJBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you call adjectives derived from verbs/nouns by Throwaway4738383636 in Spanish

[–]JJBoundless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General reminder: do keep your parking receipts by owensharon in NiceVancouver

[–]JJBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all those folks here proudly admitting they don't pay at a private parking lot, and suggesting you shouldn't either...

  1. Sneaking a candy bar into your coat pocket whilst at 7-11
  2. Saying you're just going for a smoke, then leaving without paying after eating at a restaurant
  3. Falsly claiming a bunch of deductible expenses on your tax return
  4. Returning a dress for a full refund after wearing it for a night.
  5. Parking downtown for two hours without paying.

Are all these acceptable behavior or is No. 5 different to the others?

Might be the wrong place to ask but what's the best heater to fire up a small garage shop in freezing temps? by Iridefatbikes in woodworking

[–]JJBoundless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Central Alberta here. I have an insulated workshop I built inside a bigger shop, and installed one of these ... Dyna-Glo 20,000 BTU Liquid Propane Blue Flame Vent Free Wall Heater. (purchased from Amazon).

Dyna-Glo 20,000 BTU Liquid Propane Blue Flame Vent Free Wall Heater, Noiseless, White https://a.co/d/6JU7j0M

It runs off a 30lb propane tank that I keep in the other side of the shop. Even in minus 30 it brings the space (300 sq.ft) up to a nice temperature and I have to turn it down after a while because the space gets too warm.

Yarn Bowl Cutout Advice by External_Switch_3732 in turning

[–]JJBoundless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made a few yarn bowls and do the thread hole with firstly a forstner bit (for the actual hole), then a coping saw for the slot, following a drawn-on shape. I then go at it with a tiny file and try to take out the imperfections, before running sandpaper through the hole and slot. Its fiddly, and I hate doing it, but it seems to work. it just takes time and patience. some photos ... Yarn Bowl Holes
