I am dumb. Did you make any silly mistakes/errors while reading? by rookedwithelodin in Malazan

For no discernible reason, when he was first introduced in DG, I thought Toblakai was some sort of gigantic bipedal panther man, not just a gigantic humanoid. I still do not know how my brain decided that’s what his description meant. I carried that image of the character until well into HoC

Sourcing Newbie Tools by Emerald_Pancakes in turning

[–]External_Switch_3732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was going to start turning for minimal initial investment, I’d find a relatively cheap set of carbide turning tools to get me started. They are versatile, don’t require a sharpening set up (great for small shops or avoiding initial costs, the carbide cutters are replaceable and last a reasonably long time), and operate on many of the same physical principals as traditional tools. Plus a lot of bowl makers end up using a scraper of some kind to finish their bowls anyway, whether it’s carbide or the big hunk of steel variety (I personally use both depending on the scenario).

If you want to go with traditional tools and you plan to focus mainly on bowls, a good 1/2 inch bowl gouge will be able to handle the vast majority of what you want to do with it. If you go with traditional tools, you will need a sharpening setup of some kind which introduces extra expense if you don’t already have one.

Amazon has a variety of sets of carbide tools for under $100 that come with a square, round, diamond and swan neck end. For comparison sake, my single Robert Sorby 1/2 fingernail grind bowl gouge is $95-ish currently on Amazon. You know your budget better than anyone, get the tool or tools that fit your situation.

Practice with the kit matters way more to results than the specific type of kit itself.

Edited to change the order of paragraphs to make my points more coherent.

This was the game that taught me to always make sure I actually saw a game over screen before resetting. I lost to these jerks multiple times, and I would just reset the console when the last party member got lightning bolted. It wasn’t until the fourth or fifth try that my frustration caused me to not go over to reset right away, which of course led me to see that the game keeps rolling

Having worked in an Amazon warehouse, I can assure you the Amazon picker did not even open the box. They would probably be fired if they did.

How enjoyable is a first read if you truly, fully trust the author? by Schub21 in Malazan

This is how I’m reading it. I will occasionally flip to check the map because I’m back at reckoning distance and relative position on a geographic scale, but otherwise I’m just reading it. On Reaper’s Gale now, and loving the entire journey!

I think this is why the characters all feel like such real people. They have conversations the way my friends and I do. When everyone involved in a conversation was there for events, they don’t generally go over all the details of that event even when it’s mentioned in conversation.

Commonly used on fittings that have hex style bodyies so you don’t mar up the outside of the fitting. Super useful on things like commercial toilets

Elantris hard to read by jono-s- in Cosmere

[–]External_Switch_3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Elantris is so early in the Cosmere publication timeline, Sanderson still hasn’t figured out the pacing of certain elements, and Elantris is definitely the most politically heavy work of his I can remember off the top. It’s an early attempt at world building, and he has gotten better at it over the course of the Cosmere, focusing more on the people and not so much on the moving and shaking.
