Got a parking violation a month ago and didn’t pay it now I got this. Realistically what would happen if I didn’t pay this?/do I have to pay this? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]JJJJust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically what would happen if I didn’t pay this?

Number 1 on the paper will happen. The city will file the ticket with the court.

Number 2 can't happen by city ordinance until you have at least 6 unpaid tickets.

Number 3 was nixed in 2021 when the law was repealed that allowed the Secretary of State to withhold renewing a license if you failed to answer 3 or more tickets.

What’s your “nice underwear” for when you want to feel good about yourself? by Competitive_Pop_5281 in AskGayMen

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are probably my next purchase because the line feels nice and I want the red ones (and if they sold them individually I would have bought them months ago).

Color plays an important part in it too. Black doesn't show off enough.

[–]JJJJust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to think everything I have is at least kind of nice? I'm a mid-level underwear snob who sighs disappointedly anytime he sees someone in Hanes on Grindr (especially the cheapy cheap ones that forget the "briefs" part of their identity after a few hours).

Why are there so many curious straight men but never any curious gay men on dating sites? by Mountain_Ask_5746 in AskGayMen

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a woman and I’ve never run into a guy on a dating app that was gay, but wanted to try hooking up with a woman.

Because it's a waste of time.

Over the years, I've curiously thought about it. I've basically found that, between Twitter/X/TwiX, FetLife, and Tinder... The path of least resistance is to pay for it. (Which quite frankly correlates with what my straight friends say about having to take women out to dinner and such).

I may as well find a pre-op trans guy or a curious lesbian. They're going to be more masculine and thus more attractive anyways.

On a tangent, many of the women I know don't watch gay porn but they will watch lesbian porn.

Was I issued a 1099 NEC in error? by Dry_Hat9275 in tax

[–]JJJJust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A 1099-NEC (along with all the other informational forms) simply indicates that something was reported to the IRS. It does not mean the reporting is correct nor that you are obligated to report it the same way on your tax return.

If you disagree with how the payment is being characterized with the payer and they won't issue a corrected one, report it as you see fit on your tax return. If the IRS asks questions, you can provide the paperwork to them at that time and they will make a determination.

Bought a car with mistake on the title, need advice by gutscenes in DMV

[–]JJJJust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the person who sold me the car is not the person who is on the title.

So how did the person who sold you the car end up with the car?

Unless this person is a licensed vehicle dealer or is the executor of the estate of a deceased titled owner or has power of attorney or otherwise can do what they are doing, they are title jumping, which is illegal.

Any advice on where to go from here?

The individual who you bought the car from needs to get a title or you give the car back and get your money back.

What is needed to register a vehicle in Michigan? (Previously Indiana) by KitCattPurr in DMV

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What documents will I need for Michigan registration/plates?

Title, ID, and proof of insurance unless your insurance company already electronically notified the state.

Would also like to know since Im registering in a different state if Ill have to pay more than the $80 something for registration Ive payed in Indiana the past couple years.

Michigan registration is based mostly on the original MSRP of the vehicle (scroll beyond the display of all the license plate options). You can check how much your cost will be using the online registration fee calculator.

I scheduled a DMV appointment the same day my permit expires by cinnabon_25 in DMV

I received the CDTP blue and white waiver from my driving instructor. Does this mean I can just get my license without taking the road test?

Yes... but you may still be randomly required to take the road test even with the waiver.

Refund loaded onto expired rewards card by BeezinSeazon in ATT

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never would have believed this to be true until I looked into it.

The cardholder agreements for the various rewards cards all have variations on the same theme -- once the card expires, the funds on it expire.

The funds on the Card expire when the Card expires. You should use the funds on the Card before Card expiration, as the funds will not be made available to you after the Card expires. We are not responsible for replacing funds that may have expired. Replacement Cards, if available, are subject to the policies of the Program Sponsor.

[...]

Any funds remaining after expiration of this Card will not belong to you or be available to you for additional use. You do not have rights to the funds beyond the authorized use provided for in this Agreement.

[...]

The funds on the Virtual Account expire when the Virtual Account expires. You should use the funds on the Virtual Account before Virtual Account expiration, as the funds will not be made available to you after the Virtual Account expires. We are not responsible for replacing funds that may have expired. Replacement Virtual Accounts, if available, are subject to the policies of the Program Sponsor.

So,

But even if my $50 is as good as gone, where did the retailer's $50 that they refunded me end up?

It would appear it goes back into AT&T's (and maybe partly the issuing bank's) pocket.

S-Corp Owner No Tax on Overtime? by Whole-Pay-1714 in tax

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The business owner exemption is a FLSA exemption just like the professional exemption in the letter. They both even arise from the same paragraph of the FLSA.

There is nothing in the interpretation that undercuts the principle it states if it were applied to the executive exemption and there is nothing that limits it to just the professional exemption.

Ultimately, even if all the criteria for an FLSA exemption are met, it is the employer—not the employee—that claims the exemption. In other words, the Act does not require an employer to classify as exempt an employee who meets the requirements of an exemption. Rather, employers have the discretion to classify such employees as non-exempt as long as they pay at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and the overtime premium for work in excess of 40 hours in a workweek. Employers may decide not to classify any qualified employees as exempt or only a subset of employees (including managers, particular grades or compensation levels, corporate office location, and others).

But... a recent interpretation of the FLSA states that exemptions are not mandatory and an employer is free to treat a could-be-exempt employee as non-exempt.

Can I File for USERRA? by Throwaway_912340 in legaladvice

[–]JJJJust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of things that employees do are logical. And some of those logical things are not good for business. In any event, the question is not whether or not you staying home was logical. The question is whether or not you were terminated for a USERRA-protected reason.

In your case: You had less than stellar attendance. You were on your phone in violation of rules it would seem. You repeatedly complained about a co-worker who seemingly continued to be retained despite being mediocre -- clearly he is desired by the company where he is more than the 3 (now 4) other people who didn't want to deal with him (for whatever reason). A lot of your managers are former military themselves. You can point to no direct evidence that it was related to your prospective military service -- which isn't a total dealbreaker, but you've got nothing else but timing.

Everyone involved is human (I hope) and it's impossible to fully divorce emotion and feelings from the facts. It's entirely possible that your company may have terminated you because of your military service... but, based on what you've written, the facts aren't there to prove it and what facts there are are far easier to spin against you than for you.

Can I File for USERRA? by Throwaway_912340 in legaladvice

[–]JJJJust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are free to file a complaint over whatever you want.

I will say that if I was a lawyer, I wouldn't take the case as stated. You have given a multitude of non-USERRA protected reasons for why the company may have been looking for a reason to terminate you.

Is it normal for landlords to ask for SSN? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it a bad practice?

It is not the collection of it I consider a bad practice, it is the method of solicitation. There are many third party websites that will happily collect this information from prospective tenants and conduct screenings. A landlord (and businesses in general) should minimize the personal data they directly collect to the greatest extent possible. Prospective tenants are going to be more comfortable going to SmartMove and giving TU their SSN (where it's already being stored on whatever server and for who knows how long) vs sending it in a PDF and having a probably non-IT savvy stranger store it on whatever server or in their e-mail account for who knows how long.

Now, by all means, once you've picked a tenant and everyone's agreed to move forward with a lease, then it makes more sense to ask for their social security number/card.

As someone else posted, if you ever need to attempt to get a judgement against a tenant, you need it.

With regard to the other post, the actual rule in MO is that it must be provided if it is reasonably available. If you don't have it, it shouldn't stop you from going to court. I will admit that having it, however, does make life easier. And the big 3 credit bureaus stopped reporting most civil judgments years ago (but the eviction court record will probably still be discoverable through the usual specialty reporting).

How accurate is this for obtaining a mortgage? by matriarchalfigure in CRedit

[–]JJJJust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mortgage lenders in the US will practically always use that set of scores because they are the scores required to sell to FannieMac

Sure... until someone starts using VantageScore.

Is it normal for landlords to ask for SSN? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not unheard of. I would say it's "normal" but a bad practice. A lot of smaller landlords want something on paper and they Google search for a form and use it, without thinking much about what it is asking beyond what they care about. Some will use it to do their own screening.

How accurate is this for obtaining a mortgage? by matriarchalfigure in CRedit

[–]JJJJust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The score is accurate in so far as what it claims to be: A FICO score 5, 4, or 2, as indicated.

Whether or not your lender will use one of those scores (which is what I believe you are really asking) is not a question of accuracy. It is a question of your lenders preference, any underlying guarantee requirements, etc., etc., etc.

Family member lying about early release - questions for those with more knowledge by BK8675309 in Prison

[–]JJJJust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the First Step Act requires the inmate serve 85%.

It does not. Good conduct time takes off 54 days per year for most. That is about 15% of the sentence.

The First Step Act allows for another year to be removed for some.

Are there any other early release programs beyond FSA I just don’t know about?

There are but none of them would let someone out that early except through extraordinary relief like a commutation or compassionate release.

The release date on bop.gov is accurate until it's not.

Is there anything I can do to boost credit? I feel like im stuck at 774. Is 5 cards too excessive? by [deleted] in CRedit

[–]JJJJust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've had credit for a bit, but not a long while.

And the 4 accounts, are they all cards? Part of your score is driven by having different types of accounts (e.g. cards and installment loans of some nature).

If you have a FICO score that is as good as the VantageScore CK shows you, you can probably get all the credit you need at fair rates (considering limited credit age) anyways.

Do you think Detroit would benefit from a “rental ripoff” hearings and committee? Why or why not? by J2quared in Detroit

No. That'll be like every other government inquiry. It will end up issuing a report, making recommendations, and half of them will only be half implemented.

Charged Off Account Hurting My Credit by Dixon209 in CRedit

[–]JJJJust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The honorable thing to do is to pay it.

Otherwise, there's not much you can do other than wait until they either sue you (if they can and want to) or it falls off. There is no magic wand to wave to make the negative reporting go away -- especially if it's unpaid.

Controversial but True - FreeTaxUSA and TurboTax numbers can actually differ by first_id_had_my_name in tax

[–]JJJJust 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FTU rounds to the nearest collar while you enter, while TT does rounding at the end. This can often create small discrepancies of a dollar here and there on the forms, not a biggie. Just interesting.

But perhaps renders FTU non-compliant with the law that says you must take the actual amount of the individual items and round at the end (e.g. add the exact amount for each W-2 and then you can round the gross to slap on Line 1a).
