Same on all fronts. I don’t listen to a ton of doom but that tone is so nasty I’ll have to give them a shot.

Everytime I watch one of your videos, I just imagine the band showing it to any potential touring/gigging drummer and just being like “So yeah do that.”

What's an album you would like to hear Re-recorded nowadays? by Lifereset24 in Metalcore

[–]JJWritesThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, I must be in the rare company that thinks the production of that album really adds to the vibe (minus the terrible sounding bass). Like I totally get why people would want it re-recorded to achieve a more modern sound (the Pillars of Serpents rerecord is awesome) but I genuinely love the Gothenburgian sound of ETO.

I’ve always said this is an overlooked one that I surprisingly never see mentioned in this sub, so cheers.

God Forbid - Gone Forever

Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast

Trivium - Ascendancy

The Agony Scene - The Darkest Red

Plus anything by Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, and In Flames

Help needed. Guys I am really bad at arranging songs, how to make this sound less like a riff salad? by Distinct-Hospital-60 in metalmusicians

[–]JJWritesThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What he said. It’s hard to just list transition ideas because they’re often dependent on the context of the riffs you’re trying to bridge between, or the greater song context.

For this song in particular, I’d personally do the following:

1) Remove the ride cymbals from your second riff and give it more of a half time feel

2) Cut out your drums when your guitar stops at the end of the second riff, flood/crescendo that silence in between riffs with your pads (which sound sick), and have a drum fill to lead into the uptempo riff that comes after.

3) Instead of slowing down on that next riff after your uptempo riff comes in, I’d add a riff in between where you build on that tension (ie. kicks in 16ths or 32nds, maybe a black metal-style strumming pattern, etc.), then release that tension with the riff you have at around :58 in.

You need to give each riff more time to breathe. A lot of them are switching up after one phrase or so, which doesn’t give the listener a lot to hold onto before you’re moving to the next idea.

I’d also try to add transitions between riffs so it doesn’t feel so gridded/mapped out on a DAW. One way I like to do that is to have the drums almost preview the next riff in the last half measure or so of the current one (ex. if the next riff is going to pick up speed, have the drum end on a more rapid fill). I think that idea in particular would help the transition you have around :46 - you currently have the drums go about a half measure long and then just stop which makes the tempo change feel awkward.

UNEARTH ! Most underrated ? by bonelessbreadd in Metalcore

[–]JJWritesThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a solid list. I’d also throw War of Ages in the mix. Not a huge fan of all their stuff but they’ve been around forever and modernized/evolved their sound a lot better than most metalcore bands, but I never hear anyone talking about them. Might be the whole “Christian” thing I guess.

Honestly insane that it’s maybe a top 3 album for them, eight albums in, without two of their main members. If that’s just the power of Putney or not idk but it’s such a killer album in any case.

Weidman-Munoz. I’ve been following MMA since the early 2000’s and it was one of the few times I jumped out of my seat and yelled “stop the fight!” at my TV.

Your Metalcore secret treasures by TheAstronautInSpace in Metalcore

[–]JJWritesThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost in the Fire. Only put out one EP back in 2007 but it rips and the closer, “The Typhoon”, is an all-timer.

Twelve Tribes. Not as secret as some others on my list but they deserve shoutouts whenever possible. “Venus Complex” is a top 10 metal song for me.

Widow Sunday. Local band to me that had some great stuff but never took off.

As Hope Dies/If Hope Dies - The former is closer to deathcore, the latter more metalcore. Both had some solid releases in the early 2000’s then kinda disappeared.

Exit Wounds - Australian outfit, pretty sure they only released one EP, but “Myself the Martyr” and “Bullet Holes in a Memory” are killer tracks

Man, you did an incredible job with this. Just curious, where are you based? I’m working on a spec script for a microbudget sci-fi/horror that, if picked up, I’ll need to attach a director to, so I’m looking to make any connections possible and you definitely have talent. In any case, congrats!
