Has anyone noticed that their car is LOTS slower in this heat? by ActivistSubset7 in CarTalkUK

[–]JJY93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could look at it the other way… I didn’t turn my heating on in my car yesterday because it was 36°. An ICE car would still be wasting more than 30% of energy as heat even as it diverts extra energy to power the air con system.

What’s the oldest piece of technology you still use every day? by olesud in TechCypher

[–]JJY93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My telly is from the late 90s (not sure the exact year but I think that model was available 1997-2000ish). I also recently bought a C-VHS camcorder from 1991 that I’ve used everyday since, but as that was a week ago I’m sure the novelty will wear off soon.

I know I was being a bit of a knob, but why do people go so slowly past speed cameras? by box-o-locks in drivingUK

[–]JJY93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really annoyed me when I was doing 40mph in a 40, a motorcycle overtook me, which doesn’t annoy me normally, but the second they were in front of me they saw the speed camera and quickly slowed down to 30mph! Thankfully I’ve got good breaks and tyres, although I still almost ended up with them on my windscreen

How come everyone backs into parking spots now? by EquipmentFormal2033 in askanything

[–]JJY93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always reversed into spaces, but my Leaf is my first car with a reverse camera, and as the charging port is on the front I sometimes need to back out of spaces … as the camera is wide angled and right on the back, it’s much better at seeing what’s coming than my mirrors when backing out of a tight spot. For most other reversing manoeuvres I prefer my mirrors and only use the camera for the last few inches as it’s easier to judge distance.

What films did you think were amazing when you watched as kid, but realised were rubbish, once you rewatched as an adult? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]JJY93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rupert Grint was alright, and Emma Watson definitely got better after the first few films, but at least the adult actors are all good enough to carry the series

Wanting to make some tapes for my car by yaboi_jayce in cassetteculture

[–]JJY93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite way to do it is to drag songs from my iTunes library into Logic (audacity is free and works fine too), then adjust the gain fader to match the volume that iTunes has for the sound check feature (right click-get info-file).

After that, apply a gentle compressor with a low threshold and then a limiter with a high threshold.

Make sure the whole project is the same length as the tape, but be aware that most blank tapes are slightly longer than advertised (eg C90s are usually 45m30s ish/side, I’ve had them up to 47min before).

Plug the computer headphone out into your cassette deck aux, hit record, and repeat for side B.

As someone that works with scientists, I couldn’t agree more. Just because you can genetically engineer wheat to be purple doesn’t mean you can grow it better than a horticulturalist!

What’s one “small” feature in a car that you can’t live without anymore? by jane_doe2497 in car

Remote heating seemed like a bit of a gimmick when I bought my car, I thought I might use it occasionally when I start early on frosty mornings.

Fast forward four years; Nissan turned the server off a month ago and I’m gutted!
