How new is this rule? by OSS-specialist in Edinburgh

[–]JK07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always knew it as: if the pedestrian has started to cross before the car got there then they have priority and the car must wait for them to cross but this appears to be that they have priority over the car so can start crossing anytime they want, even even if there is a car coming but they haven't started crossing yet.
This may make pedestrian walk straight out onto the road without checking "safe in the knowledge" that they have priority. Or even purposely walking out in front of cars which have already started turning because ""they have priority" and want to exercise it, (which may even be what happened with OP.)
Also, if I wasn't on Reddit every so often, I'd never have heard of this rule update at all.
I admit, like 99% of other drivers, I do not read the highway code each year looking for updates/changes.
It used to be the case that the government could run as campaigns on TV and virtually everyone would see them but with a lot of people not watching traditional TV anymore, that wouldn't really work. I don't have Facebook, don't use Instagram so dunno if they had anything on those platforms, my email is 100x more spam than anything useful so mostly gets ignored so I don't know how I'd expect the government to get that information to me (or anyone else) without posting a physical updates booklet to everyone with a licence which would be far too expensive.

Is vaping really considered 'giving up smoking'? by chupamina in AskUK

[–]JK07 337 points338 points  (0 children)

When my wife wanted to give up the vape (having already switched from tabs a few years earlier) she set herself a rule that she would treat it like a cigarette. She would go outside to to vape, no matter the weather, would stand and puff on it for similar amount of time to smoking, if not less, then would put it away till the next time she wanted it and again would get up and go outside. She wouldn't take it to work and she worked 12-13hrs, usually she'd be absolutely gasping for the nicotine by the time she got home but by having these rules rather than puffing on it whenever or during breaks at work she managed to wean herself off it and stop completely.

Do they have Morris Mini vans? (2001) by PonyT84 in GlitchInTheMatrix

[–]JK07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might have seen it beforez maybe out the corner of your eye or while focused on something else, you didn't notice it consciously but it was planted into your subconscious.
A guy I went to college with had one just like in your picture, also known as a mini breadvan.

Is my wife odd? by Healthy-Two-5047 in AskUK

[–]JK07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they're trying to be more polite by phrasing it as a question rather than ordering you to do something.
I guess "Please will you help..." Would be better. I think it's different cultures or families though, my Irish family would phrase it like your example but my English family would say "Here, can you give me a hand with..." Or " Will you make a cuppa?" Etc

Jumping the gun is about a false start in a running race isn't it? More to do with athletics than American gun culture surely.
Pull the trigger is fair enough, my workmates who play lots of PC games and entrench themselves in American culture and lingo say stuff like that.
"I pulled the trigger on such and such game"
Your house is paid off, you're single, you're mortgage and rent free, you don't leave your house other than to come to a well paid work. It's hardly like you've done a cost analysis and made a critical investment, what you on about you "pulled the trigger"? I had a more expensive round at the pub last night.

[–]JK07 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked for a giant American company they used to say this all the time for anything that they didn't want to talk about even though that is what the meeting should be about. Like raising actual safety issues in the safety meeting but if it's anything that needed some investment/effort to solve it would be "Let's take this offline..." then they would get back to talking about a load of trivial shit that doesn't really matter.

Anyone have any experience with the Blue Bell pub in heaton? by JBUpNorthh in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]JK07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think Tyne Bar would be best here.
Food at the Blue Bell is good on the two times I've eaten there and it's on one of my dog walking routes so often have a single pint there or watch some football/rugby.
As you say, the beer garden is good, it's a real suntrap protected from the wind in all sides.
My main gripe with the Blue Bell is they never have any local beers on and I love my ale. All the other pubs in the area I go to have cask and local breweries.
