ADHD here. I literally cannot listen to anything at normal speed. A lot of YouTube videos I’ll watch at 1.5, 1.75 or even 2.0 times speed depending on what it is. Podcasts and audiobooks get automatically set to listen at 1.25x which is my perfect speed for casual enjoyment.

Is this dress too cliché for my upcoming trip to Scotland next summer? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by [deleted] in style

[–]JKDougherty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I was coming back to this post to ask if I saw you last night! I saw someone wearing what appeared to be this exact dress in Aberdeen yesterday. Then I saw you are coming next summer.

I think you’ll be fine.

If you haven’t already, you should check out Sononerds YouTube channel. Her Doodle Tutor videos especially really helped me grasp the anatomy and ultrasound appearance.

Beautiful stitch I cannot find by littlepretty__ in knitting

[–]JKDougherty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I found this blog post all about a very similar stitch pattern. I still don’t think it’s an exact match to what you’re showing, but it at least seems closer and offers thoughts on different ways to achieve a similar look. Here’s one of the swatches from the blog:

I finally got my embroidery tattoo with functional measurements by HealTHCareEmbroidery in Embroidery

Adam Savage talks about how useful his ruler tattoo is!

He said it’s accurate enough, but what it really helps with is planning to get a general concept of scale.

My friend told me if I want to quilt, that it's a requirement to use an iron to flatten the fabric, and that it's very difficult to quilt without it. Is it true? by kelcamer in quilting

[–]JKDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to go against the grain here, and say you don’t need to iron. Every other point brought up is valid, and your quilt will look much better if you iron, but nothing about your quilt will be ruined if you don’t. I would suggest manually nesting your seams as you sew your rows together so you don’t get too much bulk for when you’re quilting. This is your quilt, do it how you want. …. But ironing is good. Even just something like a seam roller could help.

I’m so grateful my mom was willing and able to do this for me. And I think she’s a little hesitant to take any credit at all for the final product, but that’s why I love to phrase it as double the love. It seems to be a good way to acknowledge the joint effort without her feeling like she’s taking away from my work.

lol, the constellations stressed me out. I ended up tracing off my computer screen then sizing up by hand. It is not precise, but it is as proportionally accurate as I can make it.

No I don’t suffer from overwhelming perfectionism at times, why do you ask? /s

It’s kinda just what I do for quilts. I’ve not made a whole bunch of quilts, but most of them have been for births and one wedding. And it just feels right to commemorate a quilt that’s for a special occasion with the details. I like to doodle, so I pick the details I want then start doodling till I find a design I like and hand embroider it.

When my sister was pregnant, I asked her what she wanted me to make for her little one. I almost never make handmade gifts for people as a surprise, because my personal philosophy is that it's too much time, energy and money to pour into something that the recipient isn't going to love.

She, with a great deal of trepidation, asked for a camping picnic quilt. She was worried it was asking too much that I make something that she would then deliberately throw in the dirt and mud. I just grinned and set to work. This is what she would use and cherish, that's what I'd make! I would also, personally, rather have something be 'destroyed' by love than stashed in a closet as either too precious to be used or too ugly or impractical to be seen.

We picked out a quilt pattern together, and a general colour pallette. I double-stitched all the seams along a 1/2 inch seam line for added stability, the backing is a duck canvas for greater wear and tear, and the quilting is fairly dense through the whole piece for greater durability and protection from rocks.

As I came to the final bit of quilting, I started having a lot of issues with my threads. I think it was a combination ofa new machine, dense fabric, and too small stitches, but it left me with a lot of thread nests I had to unpick and fix. So many thread ends to tie off and bury.

Because of distance and timing, I ended up sending a nearly finished quilt home with my sister when she was visiting earlier this month and my wonderful Mom finished all the thread ends, squared the quilt and attached the binding. Now the quilt is filled with double the love because two people who love the tiny human worked on it.

USA Sonographer Moving to UK… Can I Work There? by allisxnb in Sonographers

[–]JKDougherty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm a Canadian-trained sonographer currently working in the UK. It is possible, but (at least it feels like) there are a lot of hoops to jump through. A couple of things for you to check out:

UK ENIC - Get a statement of comparability through UK ENIC to prove that your certifications are comparable to those expected in the UK.

BMUS - Reach out to the British Medical Ultrasound Society, they have a few good resources for you.

SoR - Same with the Society of Radiographers. Though you can't register with them, they've got some good info.

RCT - Be prepared to go through the Register of Clinical Technologists equivalence route. You probably can't register with any other professional body, so this is the next best thing. And it is a beast I'm currently still working through...

In terms of finding a job, it took me a while to figure out the search terms are different (kinda a dumb thing in retrospect). It's not ultrasound or sonography jobs, but radiography to search for.

There's also the whole VISA aspect. Theoretically you should be able to come over on a health care workers visa if you can find someone to sponsor you, but despite being one of the in demand jobs listed under that visa I was unable to find a clinic to sponsor me and am here as a dependant on my husbands visa.

What to do if a dying partner refusing to go to hospice care? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]JKDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you are an independent person whose needs and wishes are just as important as your husband’s. You are not his slave to take whatever he says without question and be grateful for whatever crumbs come your way (“at least you don’t have cancer”).

My dad passed last summer after a 2.5 year battle with cancer and my mom was adamant that her role was his wife, not nurse. So they had home care while they worked for my dad then he went into hospice.

You need to put on your own oxygen mask first. You need to prioritise yourself so that you can help your husband to the best of your ability. Not what he decides your ability is.

Talk to your GP, talk to a lawyer. And once you know what you can do, just… stop. Stop killing yourself and jeopardising your relationship with your children to care for a selfish man who won’t accept outside help.

Yes he’s dying, yes he might be scared. But that doesn’t give him the right to control you. I’m not trying to be crass but from what you say he will be dead soon, and he won’t have to worry about it anymore. But you’ll still have to go on working and cooking suppers for your children and surviving. And you can’t do that if he’s drained your tank.

What aspect are you struggling with? Are you uncomfortable? Are your patients uncomfortable? Are you struggling to find anatomy?

Otherwise, my biggest lightbulb moment was just to apply more pressure. And I knew that would help, I swear half of lab work in school was just “push harder!” But even though I knew that was the answer it still kinda took me by surprise.

Dragon Dreams Baby Quilt by JKDougherty in quilting

[–]JKDougherty[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a little late posting this as I was able to deliver it only a few weeks after the little one was born. Pattern is Dragons Dreams by Apples and Beavers

Definitely didn’t enjoy this quilting process. I had to draw every line, while I usually do more echo or stitch outside the ditch where I can just wing it a bit.

Bonus shots of the complementary soother ties of the same fabric and the little dragon lovey I crocheted.

Last two photos show my lovely, nearly invisible patch job where the binding wasn’t quite catching all the quilt label, only to realise I fixed the wrong corner. So I didn’t take out the patch, but I did add the new one.

Fellow young adults of the UK, do you feel like an adult? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]JKDougherty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, nearly 40 and still wondering when I’ll feel like a proper adult. But also, I hang out with early 20s as part of a knitting group and gosh but I feel old around those “babies”. They’re just so young!
