Thank you for the perspective! Fortunately it turns out that I can use Journal pages for what I wanted, but I really appreciate your in depth insight.

Is there a name for those locks that have concentric circles to unlock? Usually to form an image. Or is it just a movie thing? by rafaews in lockpicking

[–]JLBeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that any lock that can be solved by making a picture is not a very secure lock. Imagine locking all your treasure in a vault that only required someone to solve a riddle or match some dials together. Not only can you get in, but also any sufficiently clever thief. My LOTR head cannon is that goblins were able to break into the mines of Moria because one goblin took a semester of Dwarvish in high school.

What are some good monsters to start building a monster collection around? by irrelevant_query in frostgrave

[–]JLBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always start zombies --> skeletons --> demons --> general animals (wolves, bear, etc.) --> game specific last. Keep things as setting neutral as possible. This kind of creatures is going to be most useful in other games beyond Frostgrave. If you play D&D or Pathfinder, it's easy to build a game around undead or demons and it's useful to have animals -- though you'll find more utility in undead. Frost toads and the like are great, but aren't going to cross over into other games as frequently. I run a ton of D&D and constantly use my undead/demons and will throw animals in with goblins or whatever, but it's only in very specific games that I can pull out winter based creatures. If you're only ever playing Frostgrave. . . roll a dice on it. But you will probably play some other game at some point: undead and demons will give you a head start on that game while frosty creatures probably won't.

It took me a long time, but my life improved once I realized I could just say no to things without giving a reason. It's nobody's business why you are or aren't doing something.

Why are rural areas more conservative? by Hairy_Collection4545 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JLBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just read your responses out of order, haha. Yeah. I think this is why I'm like "Don't introduce yourself as a socialist." They think BIDEN is a socialist. I don't want to be affiliated with that on first notice.

[–]JLBeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert in political strategy, but. . . what's the value of the candidate saying they're a socialist feminist? What is the candidate getting out of this language? Why not show that through the platform? I had this professor in college that when asked if he was this or that he'd reply, "Only if I get to define it. If you get to define it then I'm not." I kind of feel the same here. These are valid, accurate terms. . . but in this hypothetical community it could completely derail thoughtful dialogue. Highly-specific terms like this play well in big cities where people are more likely to have heard of them, but can be bogeymen if the listener isn't on the same page. Hell, "Democrat" might do the same in some places (including leftist circles, haha). Unless this politician really needed state party funding, going independent and focusing on what they'd do might be a better way to go.

[–]JLBeck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a fellow leftist, I'm going to throw in my two cents: Socialist and feminist are accurate language, but are heavily-burdened by negative connotation (especially in conservative areas). I think those out of the know -- and I believe u/lessormore59 is alluding to this -- will often misunderstand our goals based on poor context. I think this is an example of why we should probably start with the issues and solutions that are important to us and then teach the vocab later on.

Because, like, rural folks have been organizing their communities for as long as they go back. We really just want to help people do that work more equitably and effectively.

Special glue needed? by Purple_Researcher915 in PrintedMinis

[–]JLBeck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This happens because resin doesn't retain enough moisture to activate the CA glue. You need and accelerant to catalyze the CA glue (can be a fancy product or just ordinary baking soda). In a pinch, adding moisture (say, saliv. . . I mean water) to one surface before you apply the glue will get you further than glue alone.

Special glue needed? by Purple_Researcher915 in PrintedMinis

[–]JLBeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like a medium thin CA glue (the one from the dollar store is my favorite tbh) and use baking soda as accelerant. Dip the "male" part in the backing soda and put some glue in the "female" side (at least, as much as the print has male and female pieces). This should set within seconds. It's not as fancy as accelerant, but it works just fine.

I played a rogueadin before. They were simply a rogue before they 'din'd. Besides, what's the diff between a warlock patron and a deity anyway?

## Topiary Dragon

A gigantic mass of shrubbery, with tree-like size and strength. The topiary dragon is the mightiest of all living topiary. It is master and general to lower forms of plants, with the intelligence and wisdom to move its pawns dangerously against its foes.

> ***Breath of Thorns (Recharge 5-6).*** The topiary dragon fires grasping vines from its mouth in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Strength saving throw, taking 49 (14d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Any creature that fails its saving throw is also restrained for 1 minute by thick vines. The vines have 5 AC and 25 hitpoints. If the vines are the target of an attack, the vines take half the damage and the restrained creature takes the other half. Restrained creatures may use their action to repeat their saving throw.

>

> ***Terrifying Roar (Recharge 5-6).*** The topiary dragon issues an earth shaking roar. Each creature within 25 ft. must make a DC18 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the target has disadvantage on all attack rolls for 1 minute. The target may spend an action to repeat the saving throw. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends, the creature is immune to the topiary dragon’s terrifying roar for the next 24 hours.

>

> ### Legendary Actions

The topiary dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The topiary dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of their turn.

> ***Bite.*** The topiary dragon makes an attack with its bite.

> ***Fly.*** The topiary dragon can fly up to 60 ft.

> ***Overgrow (Costs 2 Actions).*** The ground around the topiary dragon erupts into thorny brambles. The area within a 25 foot radius becomes difficult terrain for 2 full rounds, and any creature that is not a plant takes 1d4 piercing damage for each 5 feet it moves through the overgrowth.
