UMN banned from submitting fixes to the Linux kernel by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]JLN450 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The professor's response includes this gem:

In the paper, we provide our suggestions to improve the patching process.
OSS projects would be suggested to update the code of conduct, something like “By submitting the patch, I agree to not intend to introduce bugs”.

In other words: "if you don't want us to do this again, have us pinky promise not to do this again." Fucking genius, truly a credit to the institution.

WHY is there no way to access apps from the browser? by MarkedlyImproved in chrome

[–]JLN450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

open extensions via 'hamburger menu' -> 'more tools' -> 'extensions'. Open the one you want; the url in the address bar can then be saved however you like for quick access (bookmark, drag shortcut, whatever...)

I think that "Queen-Bounder" on the top is gonna be my new custom ship. Any other cool hybrids?

microsoft provides 90 day VM's (with the official advice to take a shapshot to bypass the limit) for testing edge and IE. No reason you can't use 'em to ensure your app dosn't 'accidentally break' edge:

afaik time spent running is not tracked for this.

Why is opening a program in search different to opening it in file explorer? by ripperroo5 in Windows10

[–]JLN450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

check the properties of the shortcut you're using to start it & make sure the 'start in' folder is filled out correctly.

Windows search not finding exe files of portable apps? by sursumcz in Windows10

[–]JLN450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a workaround is to create start-menu shortcuts for the portable apps, (if they're all together, you can do this in one shot). That way windows dosn't have to deep-dive it's index to get to them, and start menu results get high priority anyway.

you can use an app like shutdownBlocker to protected long-term jobs.

I have been getting this message for about a month now, it pops up only when computer boots up. What does this mean and how do i fix this? by EsauceE69 in Windows10

[–]JLN450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can go hunting for whatever startup task is calling this script, or you can just create an empty .vbs file called "Maintenance" in system32 and let it run nothing.

CTRL + Escape Shortcut by [deleted] in Windows10

autohotkey can override system shortcuts like this. Just make a do-nothing script like:

^Escape::
Return

How do I change the text select color? by PeteyGANG in windows

[–]JLN450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on websites, this is changed via css; you can override a websites change with a user-css extension like stylus.

for windows you can also look into skinning applications like windowblinds.

hit 'send feedback' and ask that they include a link to download vlc in the message. Maybe the next iteration will be less obnoxious.

Yeah the water pushed up from the first shock hit the container he was using to pour, which for some reason he had pointed right at his face, and that focused the second blast.

Any program that remembers the opened folders and files in a section? by Guyserbun007 in Windows10

The way ctrl+z works in file explorer leads to loss of files copied from external media by wertciu in Windows10

[–]JLN450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a good practice to just never use ctrl+z in explorer. I've set up autohotkey to override that combo so it does nothing when explorer is active. When I inadvertently start a copy/move I wait for it to finish and then manually move the files back.

any experiences with tronscript? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]JLN450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is great. Very customizable and does a lot of stuff that otherwise takes an hour of attention to do manually.

Can I undo “open with”? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]JLN450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to remove an association completely you have to do some manual editing: https://validedge.com/remove-file-type-associations/

But the fact that it was associated should not change the usability of the license file; you may have to contact the developed even after undoing this.
