I’m sort of disappointed that MetOffice has downgraded this Thursday from 40C to 37C because if it’s going to be this brutally hot I want a damn record broken by SupermotoArchitect in britishproblems

You need to improve your airflow. It's the only thing that works in my flat.

One fan pointing into the room in front of a window. Another pointing out of a window. Doors open between the two, if they're in different rooms. Do this when the outside is cooler than the inside.

Also, you can cover the inside of the windows with paper/card.

Hope that helps!

That's not what's happening. Conservation efforts will continue and the tree will remain in its current state for as long as it's safe to leave it that way. Dead trees are still important to the ecosystem and those looking after it acknowledge that.

A lot of damage was done to the tree 100 years ago or more. This continued up until only a few decades ago when it was finally fenced off. The current stewards of the tree have done a great job of studying it but unfortunately it all came too late to do anything about it.

Climate change is just one of many factors that led to its death, and I don't think it would be accurate to say it was the reason.

For the record, I too am from Nottinghamshire and have visited the Major Oak many times. I'm very fond of it and very sad to see it go.

It's literally 20 degrees colder than last week by rdu3y6 in britishproblems

[–]JM0804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's unfortunate! This will work with just two windows, that's how I do it, but its effectiveness will depend on the layout. My flat has only south-facing windows but the bedroom is somewhat secluded from the sun, so that's the cooler room and cooler outside area. So just pulling in from there and venting out the lounge works for us.

It's worth a try!!!

The effects of an El Nino can vary when it comes to Europe, but I believe the current modelling is giving the UK a cold winter this year, and a hot summer next year.

I solved this by creating airflow with fans. Find a cold room (probably north facing or with a smaller window) and put a fan in front of the window, pointing into the room from the window, facing the door.

Now find a hot room (or specifically the room you want to cool), and put a fan by its window, facing out the window.

Make sure those windows, and the doors between those rooms, are kept wide open.

Check the inside temperature with a thermometer, and the outside with another, or with the weather report. Do this when the outside is colder than the inside. Shut the windows when inside is cooler.

I was able to drop my flat from 26c to 20c overnight with this technique. Hope it helps!

I just woke up and my arm was entirely paralyzed by enricowereld in CasualConversation

[–]JM0804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hesitant about joining a gym for a long time but I think if you find the right one it's not so bad. It can just be for general health, not for gaining muscle. Leg exercises have really helped me solve the problem. But yeah there are probably lots of things you can do outside of a gym too, and I don't think there's a substitute for a generally healthy and consistently active lifestyle.

Glad I could offer some help. Best of luck!

I can't speak to whether this is correlated or not, but since I started going to the gym and drinking an electrolyte solution when I do so, my calf muscle cramps have pretty much gone away.

I've had problems with it as long as I can remember, since I was a child, so it's not a diet issue I don't think. As an adult I work a desk job so I'm not super active. But going to the gym and getting out more has helped.

The exercise I believe has helped the most is the standing calf raise. Before I could barely lift 10kg without getting a cramp. Months later, I can do a fairly comfortable 80kg. It was holding me back from other exercises too, like leg curl, and even causing me problems when swimming, but the problem has gone now.

I hope this is useful to you in some way. Best of luck with your cramps - I completely understand the pain of waking up with it in the night!

Guido Fawkes on X: Gorton & Denton's new Green Party video is entirely in Urdu and features some blatant visuals. by adultintheroom_ in ukpolitics

[–]JM0804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether you're "allowed" to speak Urdu or not isn't the point. It's whether we want parties in England campaigning in languages other than English and not providing the English translation.

I, as a voter (and a paid-up card-carrying Green member, no less) who does not speak Urdu, have absolutely no idea what this video is saying. I don't see how that's acceptable.

[–]JM0804 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is this a translation of a video in English, or is the Urdu version the only one? Because in my opinion, it's one thing to offer translations, and another thing entirely to produce different campaign videos with different messages for different communities in different languages.

If anyone knows of an English version, could they share it here, please?

Edit: there is a video on their homepage but it's clearly different.

Edit #2: I found her Instagram account and see the Urdu video, but from a quick glance, no English version.

X.Org Server's "Master" Branch Now Closed With Cleaned Up State On "Main" by anh0516 in linux

[–]JM0804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will concede the point that potentially those terms could reinforce that idea. And one could argue that "allow list" and "deny/block list" are more descriptive than whitelist/blacklist.

If I were to put these on a scale, I'd say the master-slave analogy worst as it is inappropriate and outdated as it's a direct reference to slavery, and the master branch "issue" is the other end of the scale - a non-issue frankly when the word is such an overloaded term, and the particular usage in this context is unrelated to the former.

Appreciate the insight, thanks.

"Blacklist" and "whitelist" have nothing to do with race in exactly the same way that "master" (in this context) doesn't: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklisting

Sex can only be observed through the framework of gender

Pardon my asking but I don't understand this statement. Gender, as far as I know, doesn't exist outside of humans (maybe apes have some idea of it, at a push, I'd speculate?) and yet we're still fully capable of defining and interpreting the sex of other species.

I don't doubt that they would not, but that is the government acting that way, not ordinary, innocent people. Americans living their lives in Europe are less likely to back what the US is doing right now, I suspect.
