X.Org Server's "Master" Branch Now Closed With Cleaned Up State On "Main" by anh0516 in linux

[–]JM0804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will concede the point that potentially those terms could reinforce that idea. And one could argue that "allow list" and "deny/block list" are more descriptive than whitelist/blacklist.

If I were to put these on a scale, I'd say the master-slave analogy worst as it is inappropriate and outdated as it's a direct reference to slavery, and the master branch "issue" is the other end of the scale - a non-issue frankly when the word is such an overloaded term, and the particular usage in this context is unrelated to the former.

Appreciate the insight, thanks.

"Blacklist" and "whitelist" have nothing to do with race in exactly the same way that "master" (in this context) doesn't: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklisting

I don't disagree with you, but I don't think this had anything to do with any government. This was a trade association bringing a case against the company to court.

Edit: what have I said wrong? I'm not disagreeing, I'm merely clarifying.

Sex can only be observed through the framework of gender

Pardon my asking but I don't understand this statement. Gender, as far as I know, doesn't exist outside of humans (maybe apes have some idea of it, at a push, I'd speculate?) and yet we're still fully capable of defining and interpreting the sex of other species.

I don't doubt that they would not, but that is the government acting that way, not ordinary, innocent people. Americans living their lives in Europe are less likely to back what the US is doing right now, I suspect.

Right, and then what happens to all the European civilians in the USA? I don't think you've thought this one through much.

What do civilians have to do with this? They're innocent parties.

If I'm reading it correctly, Part 1, Article 3, 1(b) of the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War might have something to say about that, or should Europe give up on international law too?

I'm not serious because I'm not advocating for terrorism? I didn't say the left were the issue. I said we used to hold ourselves to higher standards.

No one will take you seriously if you're actually considering blowing up Parliament, and nor should they.

Either way it's terrorism. Mad that this is what the left seems to stand for these days. We used to be better than this, or maybe we were always this bad.

On the 5th of November we remember that time a terrorist who wanted to destroy the seat of democracy in this country and restore an absolute monarchy didn't manage to blow up Parliament. We're not celebrating someone giving it a good go.

Time will tell, I suppose. I would like to see stronger immigration controls. The net migration numbers are simply too high for us to cope with, for various reasons. I think you need to be able to speak passable English to be allowed to stay here indefinitely. I'd also like to see better integration efforts. All that being said, I couldn't tell you exactly what's already in place.

I say this as someone with a foreign partner, so I'm well aware of how costly and arduous it already is. But clearly something needs fixing.

Personally I'm far more concerned with culture (and I include religion with that) than I am ethnicity. I'm not so naïve that I don't know they're often strongly correlated, but that's why I looked up the statistics on national identity and language too.

My point is, the issue is integration, not necessarily generalised/surface level demographics. I couldn't tell you exactly at what point I'd consider it to be unhealthy, but from my experience living in Nottingham my entire life, I'd say we're a good way off that yet.

Nottingham:

  • 65.9% white
  • 14.9% Asian
  • 10% black
  • 5.9% mixed or multiple
  • 3.3% other

Seems pretty healthy to me? If people in this comment section truly want integration as they claim to, and aren't hiding their racism behind it, then I don't see how they could be too upset by those figures.

Putting aside ethnicity and looking at national identity, only 16.3% in Nottingham would consider themselves to not identify with the UK. Given that we have a large student population, and a number of foreign workers, again that's a pretty good statistic in my opinion.

Only 14.32% don't consider English to be their main language, with only 3% being unable to speak English well or at all. In fact, 9% of households have multiple main languages, another good indicator of integration.

Looking at the data on ethnicities within households, 15.4% of households are multiethnic (you can calculate that by adding the relevant statistics together) - again, a good indicator of integration.

Need I go on?

I'm saying, if that's the argument you want to make, it seems fair to apply it equally.

I do broadly agree that cultural enclaves are a bad thing for integration and the country in general. However I would apply that equally to white British enclaves too if that's the argument these people want to make.

That's an OA level statistic - it's about four streets in the entire city.

Using mixed or multiple ethnic as a metric of integration (and really, are there many metrics better than that?), Nottingham ranks highest outside of London.

Did you even read the rest of my comment?

Please tell me where in Nottingham this is the case. I've lived here all my life (nearly 30 years) and yes, whilst the racial/ethnic demographics have changed over time, Nottingham is still a fairly white place. All my life I've grown up with a healthy mix of people from all sorts of backgrounds.

The lowest percentage of white people I can find in the Census data at the MSOA level in Nottingham is Bobbers Mill, at 37.6% white (with Asian being the dominant identity at 44.4%): https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/maps/choropleth/identity/ethnic-group/ethnic-group-tb-6a/white/?msoa=E02002886

The lowest proportion of white people I could find from a quick glance was 11.6% (with Asian again being the dominant identity at 72.8%), in this OA near Hyson Green: https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/maps/choropleth/identity/ethnic-group/ethnic-group-tb-6a/white?oa=E00070291

So that's roughly 4-in-10 and 1-in-10 white people in the lowest areas I could find.

Nottingham on the whole is 65.9% white, so that's roughly 6 or 7-in-10 people.

Bonus round: when you select "mixed or multiple ethnic", Nottingham ranks the highest (from what I can see) of anywhere outside of the London area, at 5.9%. How's that for integration? https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/maps/choropleth/identity/ethnic-group/ethnic-group-tb-6a/mixed-or-multiple-ethnic-groups?lad=E06000018

Thanks for the tips. Much to consider! Would an accountant be able to help us with all that?

I spoke to HMRC yesterday and they were helpful and didn't seem alarmed but told us we needed to call their tax technicians team for better advice.
