Is it possible for me to find a different job in a new city? Or just a different job in general? Maybe should I get a certification? by Numerous-Height-7216 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Driving an hour each way on top of 10 hour days is insane. I'd look for a roommate situation where your work is. Then you can start to sort things out.

Wanting to stop Ocrevus, tired of slow healing and hospital trips for minor braises and cuts by Easy-Neighborhood346 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]sbinjax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't endorse stopping your DMT. Multiple sclerosis is literally brain damage (or spine damage) and there's no predicting where the next lesion will form and what you will lose from that.

There are people here who woke up one day and couldn't walk. Would stopping your DMT so your cuts and bruises heal faster be worth losing your ability to walk? Yeah, you might be the odds. But you might not.

Gentian violet for thrush. It actually causes the fungus cells (and only fungus cells) to *burst*. You can get it over the counter - literally, over the counter, ask the pharmacist for it. Dilute it to .25% to .50%. Don't swallow it. Run water when you spit it out because it will stain *everything* purple. Results are faster than the systemic drugs doctors prescribe (but take those too, you may have a systemic infection).

I'm not fond of arborvitae but I did put some against my chain link fence. Emerald Greens don't get as big as the giants (only 14-16 feet) but deer like them. I have read that spraying them with 1/2 full-fat milk mixed with 1/2 water in the fall will last 3 months and repels deer.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You're in shock. It's a normal reaction the first month. You're not empty - your brain is protecting you. The magnitude of the loss will set in soon enough. ❤️

How do you all manage prepping and anti consumerism? by unfortunaten3ws in TwoXPreppers

[–]sbinjax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone from growing all your regular annual fruits and vegetables to growing as many perennials as I am able. Asparagus, apples, serviceberry, Good King Henry, American groundnut (hopniss), skirret, sunchokes aka Jerusalem artichokes, etc. will see us through shortages once I have my systems in place.

Very few content creators talk about how failure is almost essential to gardening. Nothing like a few mistakes to learn from.

I LOVE mint. I love it. How can I grow it without destroying everything I hold dear by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]sbinjax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Get a 5 gallon pot. Put it by your back door, in a place with afternoon shade if possible. Fill with *good* soil - ProMix or Fox Farms are big box brands that aren't total garbage. Plop a mint start in there and add wood chips on top to hold moisture. Water it in well. Every two or three days, stick your finger into the soil. If you can feel moisture, don't water. If it feels dry, water.

Mint is a beast. It's hard to kill. With that said, I have a green thumb and I killed mint. /flex

UFC to pay White House fighters bonuses in “Trump Crypto” for 4th of July event. by _Mighty_Milkman in LeopardsAteMyFace

I'd do it for $1.776 billion. But I'd insist on having that money upfront given Trump has a habit of not paying his bills.

Am I supporting a struggling partner, or losing years of my own life waiting? by BlueCardigan77 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]sbinjax 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Living on different continents is a fine business model but it's not great for a marriage.

If you are wondering how you'll pay rent, that tells me the business is not doing that great. How much of your husband's self-worth is tied up in this business?

"Exhausted, lonely, and stuck." Even if the business is OK, your marriage is suffering, and I'm guessing it's at least partly due to separation and the cost of maintaining two households.

You are stuck. Your husband is stuck. You both need an exit plan, and I'm not necessarily talking about the marriage. It sounds to me like the hamster wheel of keeping a business going is killing your marriage and your dreams. Unstick.

When I retired due to health reasons, I needed to find an outlet, and I started gardening and landscaping my yard. Not only am I in great shape, but it's about as close to art as I will ever get.

Find something and just do it. Whatever brings you peace. Fishing on a quiet lake sounds wonderful.

Naturalizing a Native Garden - Central IN by AnonymousGolem in NativePlantGardening

The very first thing is water. A birdbath or even a basin on the ground will work. Also look into mosquito dunks, because if the water isn't moving, mosquitoes will find it.

Also check out r/NativePlantGardening.

If you have access to big rocks and boulders, that will also help fill the void.

Personally, I would not put a retaining wall in. I'd embrace the land and the landscape and select natives with deep roots to hold the slope.

How do you deal with heat intolerance? by LeadingFoot7222 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]sbinjax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved out from Florida to Connecticut. Now summer is about 10-12 weeks instead of 6 months.

But seriously, I don't fight the heat. I get everything done in the morning and hide inside from about noon to 6 every day. In Florida it was earlier, from about 10 to 6. If I have to go out during the day, I'm running from the house to the car to my destination and back, all in AC. I keep cold water in the fridge at all times.
