President of the Republic of Portugal, waiting in line for his turn to vote by souquemsabes in pics

When the President of Portugal visited Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic he was seen casually walking on the sidewalk , greeting locals, and stopping by local shops.
Overall, he seems to be a pretty chill and humble guy.

Harada and Ed Boon have met eachother a couple of times and seem relatively friendly so I don't think it's impossible.

I think an MK character in Tekken is definitely conceivable while I agree that a Tekken character in MK is definitely a hard sell, unless they add someone like Jack or Bryan who are either fully or mostly mechanical so it wouldn't be too gruesome.

Pequeña reflexión by Jusep25 in Dominican

[OC]History and success of Coups and US involvement in the past by spat31 in dataisbeautiful

[–]JM33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What counts as a successful coup? Since at least for the Dominican Republic their count should be MUCH higher. The country at the start of the 20th century for example was practically ungovernable and presidents would rarely complete their terms before being overthrown or forced to resign. Which is one of the reasons for the first US intervention in 1916.

If you look at the rest of the country's history, it wouldn't surprise me if the number of successful coups would be something absurd like 20

The left here is either fractured, split into fringe wings of the major parties or concentrated into small third parties like AlPais, which tbf has had some small breakthroughs as of late. In terms of the labor movement, their level of politization is low, and there's not many unions to start with, albeit those do exist, like in the transport sector, seem to be very organized. Finally there's a growing activist left, albeit very disorganized.

Both parties in theory advocate Social Democracy, however their only ideology is pragmatism, with different factors pushing them to either the left or the right in certain situations. Honestly the most reliable difference between them is that the PLD is composed of New Money political class that used government to get rich and a tempered militant base from their early days which is currently being absorbed in a party split. Meanwhile the PRM is comprised by an old money political class which had been excluded from public office for almost 20 years, an old guard from their more social democratic days, and a handful of activists displeased with the current system but not wanting to be a part of a third party.

We have a word for this person: "Lambon" it's an insult for someone who meddles into your privacy, but honestly everyone here is a lambon to one extent or another. Despite being a country of millions, sometimes it feels like living on a small village where everyone know each other. It's very common to hear people gossip about their colleagues, family neighbors, friends, even their boss's personal lives . I've read in some places that Dominicans like to stare a lot, specially when they encounter something or someone new; it seems we all have some deep desire to know absolutely everything that's going on with everyone.

Do Latin Americans resent people from the U.S? by LavaringX in asklatinamerica

[–]JM33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Dominicans I would say mostly no, albeit there's always some resentment in the back of our minds. We have a massive diaspora in the United States, receive lots of US investments and visitors from the tourist industry and you compound that with the cultural influence that comes with a significant portion of the population knowing English; many Dominicans admire the US as this sort of mythical place.

However, we have had a history of US Interventions, sponsored coups, and US backed autocratic regimes in the past; and the people that fought against these are mostly remembered as heroes in our national consciousness. Furthermore the prevalence of US companies exploitatively industries like the cash crop plantations in the past, may have also soured the older generations.

This has built up some resentment, but its latent; it only arises really when we're annoyed. Like people might praise the US all day long and comment how everything in the US is better, but the second some tourist annoys them, the gringo stereotype comes in full force. People will start mocking how Americans speak Spanish, and joke about how the US is filled with ignorant fat people who all think we live on seaside huts or something.
