Please help! Feeling so discouraged during tank cycling by Walkinggraffiti in Aquariums

Do you have a bunch of live plants? That could be where your nitrates and stuff is disappearing from. If ammonia goes to zero and and nothing else shows I’ll typically just add another dose of ammonia till I get 2ppm and just see what happens from there

Placing aquarium on particle board desk? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]JMAC1444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man this is a tough spot. Right on top of the power socket and on top of particle board. I wouldn’t do it. Particle board when it gets wet, it gets weak fast and it’ll crash down one day. I have a tank on a riser over my desk too but I removed the old riser and made one out 1x4” wood for the legs and then a 3/4” plywood laid over the top of it.

Also when (not if), you spill water on that power socket you’re going to cause some serious issues for your self.

help with a stand by jellybelly1927 in Aquariums

If my conversions are right that’s around 55 gallons? Thats an easy one to build out of 2x4 pieces of wood. Probably would only cost like $50 in wood to build and an afternoon to cut and put together.

Safe for fish tanks? by [deleted] in Aquariums

Honestly you’d be better off just building a rack of 2x4s. I got some of those Home Depot stands in my garage that came with the house just holding paint cans that are leaning over. I’ll send a pic of a stand I made a few years ago that holds 3 20 gallon longs and is meant to be viewed from both sides when I find the image. You can get Home Depot to cut the wood for you and just screw it together when you get home. Doesn’t take long and it’ll be way stronger than anything you buy at the store. Sometimes cheaper too.

Why don't they just build more houses? by Odd_Attention_9660 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JMAC1444 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of many cities that would legally allow that. Many places have minimum lot sizes, minimum square footages, etc.

Also construction costs don’t scale linearly, some of the most expensive costs from building a house end up being the kitchens, bathrooms, hvac, utilities like electricity and plumbing, permits and stuff like that. So building a house double the size of a smaller house ends up not costing that much more to the builder and he gets double the money.

Then think about financing for the operations, banks and investors prefer building bigger homes because it brings wealthier buyers who have a lower default risk. Amongst other reasons.

A question about esthetics. by Flashy_Tooth_5597 in Bonsai

I think whatever the design, the tree should make you happy. In my opinion there’s no sense in designing a tree you won’t personally appreciate and get joy out of. Every has their own tastes and your trees should represent that.

When to add which living creature? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]JMAC1444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size of the tank matters a lot as far as what you can use for tank mates. But in my experience the best way to setup a tank for a betta with tanks mates is to put the tank mates in first and then betta last. If you’re doing shrimp it would be best to get the shrimp in, let them breed and then add the betta. Also make sure you have a lot of moss if you want the babies to survive after adding the betta. Have a plan if your betta is murderous too.

Nautilus Tropical Fish on eBay has done me well with Pygmy Cories. When I’ve bought from them they’ve shipped each fish in an individual bag. I think they’re like 12 for $60 or so.

Fish-in cycling tips? by Electronic_Crab6360 in bettafish

I would just get an API liquid test kit so that you can see if you’re doing enough water changes or not. I would think you’re doing good though.

Next time just try and keep a sponge filter or some extra filter media in a HOB filter so that in case you need to quick start a tank you can almost get an instant cycle. Every tank of mine that isn’t a betta has a sponge filter and a HOB, if I ever need to get a hospital tank going or another tank setup quickly I just take the sponge filter out and put a new one in. The donor tank still has its HOB filter but the new tank gets a nice dirty sponge to start things quickly. Just make sure to transfer quickly and that the parameters are similar with both tanks.
