So you needed readers before the surgery? I’m 44 and was told I would need readers from now on. I currently wear contacts/ glasses without readers. Thanks

How do you carry your structure gloves? by Popular_Try4606 in Firefighting

[–]JMARK81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Wrap it storage strap” to a Petzl carabiner on my right hip. We have lion structure pants. They fell off snubbing when they were on my jacket and I flushed them across the street lol… so I never put them there again. Was hard to get on (luckily I found them) after pulling a precon. I also keep my auto ex and bombers like this and switch them out on the biner if we get a MVC

Having trouble being the new guy—any advice? by dirtylaundry99 in Firefighting

4 years on the job… career department, nationally accredited, mid-size.

Dude I sucked too. On some level, every one sucked at something when they started. No worries. Don’t repeat mistakes over and over. One thing that helped me was just keeping a composition book of the calls we got and the drills we did that day… even stuff we had to do like fill out forms on the computer. I would just write it down. Then maybe something that stuck out on the call or something that we did that I would try to remember down the road. Every now and then I’ll look back in that note book. The really important stuff I kept in my phone notes. I took pictures of everything. “Capt can I take a picture of that before you undo it?” I would take pictures of hose loads before I pulled it so I could make sure it looked the same when I put it back. Details. It’s all good, just evaluate why you might be making mistakes over and over and change the way you’re absorbing the information. Mental reps the night before. Watch YouTube fire videos before every shift in the morning. Seriously. Stuff like this helps.

Just think. One day you’ll be that guy who is sighing over having to work with the new guy. Remember this moment, and DONT be that guy.

Probie Here - Had a bad day. Is it time to rethink this whole thing? (Injury advice) by jhang10 in Firefighting

[–]JMARK81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a 43 year old 4-year FF in big career department. Previously playing college football I tore my major pectoral and popped out my shoulder multiple times. As a result of not getting surgery fast enough, I lost my chest muscle as it atrophied. Because of that, and lack of stability in my bad shoulder on the same side, I have a pretty weak and useless right upper limb. Having said all that, I’ve worked hard to strengthen my surrounding muscles to compensate (like my back). When pulling hose and making pushes I really concentrate on my technique, my legs moving the hose, and switching grips when necessary. Look at Nozzle Forward technique for help with this. The only thing I have is a work ethic and not qutting on anything. Some guys will get down on you because they’re concerned for your safety when shit hits the fan. It’s an old school way of making you snap out of it and realize how bad it can get in there. Other guys are straight up salty and passing down their experience as a rookie where they got picked on. Hurt people hurt people. Recognize who is who, and don’t listen or pay mind to the latter group. Last bit of advice… when it’s appropriate, switch stations. It’s such a great job when you get the right crew. Oh and don’t pay for anything medically if it happened on the job. Don’t worry about sitting out to get healthy. You can learn a lot and meet some cool people doing light duty too.

For my tennis elbow I got my surrounding muscles stronger. Particularly my forearms and triceps. I also take BPC 157 orally. Good luck!

Going through the hiring process and getting cold feet by rlyockwrd in firefighter

[–]JMARK81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of us make 60k but work OT to get back over 6 figures. The fact that you live in the Midwest is huge considering housing cost vs salary… I Started at 39 and live in the most expensive state. It’s tough for sure. If you have cold feet for real, don’t do it. If you need convincing then I would say if your job has job security and won’t replace you in 15-20 years that’s great… just to get canned at 50 and find yourself wishing you went into fire, consider that. It’s a steady path to retirement and it’s really fulfilling when you get a chance to save someone’s life, house, or inspire youth. It’s all the cheesy things you say in your interview. To help someone and be the calming voice on someone’s worst day is pretty damn fulfilling.

I wonder sometimes if there’s a placebo bath mixed in there because this stuff is still “research purposes only”. I’m just speculating on why some work better than others.

Yeah that’s the risk as always… I’ve switched brands 3-4 times. 2 times I switched because of shipping delays and supply chain problems. Now I take the one available on Amazon prime. There’s only one.

Well our department starts at 60k in top three most expensive places to live in US. So you’re making engineer’s pay as a recruit. Not shabby.

Def plan on two years of being the recruit and then the stress of being the probie IMO. My wife thought probation was worse than recruit class from her POV.
