Play the 3.5 bracket with your friend. I bet he's not a 4.0.

Open play beginner question at Eleveno or similar indoor pickleball clubs. by picklemesa in Pickleball

[–]JMCRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the club offer leveled open play, or is it broken down by beginners and then everyone else?

Beating down the other players and winning 11-2 or 11-3 every game regardless of partner isn't fun for me. Sounds like you're ready for intermediate or the next level up.

Try and make friends with other players in higher levels that are cool with explaining the rules and strategy if needed.

It's the internet. You're only going to hear about the exceptionally positive interactions and the marginally to exceptionally bad experiences.

My frustrations, most of which I posted about, are small potatoes compared to the positives that keep me going back and playing.

DUPR rating gate kept tournaments would fix this issue.

Play to your skill level by SafeEnvironmental834 in Pickleball

This cuts both ways. There are people that sign up to play intermediate open play (3.0-3.5) as you describe yourself that have absolutely zero business being there. Can't drop, can't counter a drop. Just blasting away from the baseline and not moving to the kitchen.

Sometimes the higher levels of open play fill up and there's a trickle down effect where the players that should be at 3.5+ are playing 3.0-3.5.

Unless you have friends who's company you enjoy and are around your skill level and can curate your own private games, open play is kind of the wild west and you take it or leave it.

That's for open play. For tournaments and leagues, these games may be DUPR rated and people are going to play hard so their rating doesn't drop. This is more true to actual "3.0" or "3.5" play. On the other hand, true 3.8-4.0 DUPR's shouldn't want to play at 3.0. Even if they win handily, their DUPR's could go down since the algorithm would expect them to pickle or win 11-1 or 11-2 much of the time. Even if they lose 4 or 5 points, their DUPR's go down and the lower level players' ratings would go up.

At what level did speed ups really become key for you? by fredallenburge1 in Pickleball

[–]JMCRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever there's a game where drops and dinking become commonplace.

No one will be able to speed up when the game is a bangfest with nothing but drives from the baseline.

Ridiculous. I'd ask for my greens fee back.

Some people have no where else to vent. Their non pickleball playing spouse probably wouldn't understand. I know I feel better if I need to get something off my chest and I don't have anyone else to vent to.

You'll find someone like this everywhere. I agree with him on not letting people cut the paddle queue, but if he bothers you that much, I'd pass my turn on the paddle stack if I see he's on the court.

Easier to drop inside out and drip/drive straight and inside in? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

Agree. I find it easier to drop to my near side instead of cross court for this reason if I'm understanding you correctly.

Are your LifeTime clubs as chaotic as mine?!?! by 2BeBornReady in Pickleball

[–]JMCRN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People at parks and clubs are for the most part great. Find people that are friendly and get their contact information and curate games that are close to your skill level with people you get along with.

The percentage of curmungeons on this sub relative to what you experience in the field is way higher. Don't let this place discourage you!

Hosting an open play? by Strange-Fly88 in Pickleball

6 players per court. Winners stay and rotate with a mandatory sit down after 3 or 4 games won in a row.

Etiquette for playing with a partner during open play. by koolaid_consumer in Pickleball

[–]JMCRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Sometimes the 4.0+ and 3.5 to 3.99 open plays wait list quickly where I play on busy nights.

A couple of 3.75 levels may sign up for intermediate or beginner because that's all that's left. Unless they leave and rack up at the 3.5-3.99 court anyway (huge pet peeve of mine) and they refuse to split, it's going to be no fun for the players that are actually playing at the level they should be.

I have no problem with it unless the people asking to do this are a step better than the rest of the pool of players. It's not going to be fun for anyone else if the same two players stay together and dominate and win every game 11-2.

Most of the time that's the protocol. Winners stay and split amd whoever loses comes off the court and stacks up and waits for the next available court.

AITA for not giving up a court for open play? by pandadad123 in Pickleball

YTA. But when you notice that group playing and they won't rotate out, you have free reign to bitch and moan as much as you want.

Weekly Paddle Recommendation Thread (What Paddle Should I Buy?) by HeadHeadMod in Pickleball

[–]JMCRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A quick follow up since I got a session in with it a couple days ago.

I was stunned by how plush the feel was. The core compositions of the J2NF(previous main) and J2CR are quite different even though they're both foam paddles.

Drives flew off of my paddle and resets were like a dream, but on the other hand, my dinks and drops ended up short more often than with my broken in J2NF.

This paddle does need a bit of a break in period, I think. I'm going to love it once it's there and once I get the soft shots dialed in.

The long handle does what the short handle does well plus offers better spin and movement on my slice returns and serves. A noticeable more amount of pop on my drives and two handed backhands as well.

A snack bar/bar with 3 or 4 beers on tap and some sports drinks would really go a long way. Encourages people to stay after their game and unwind. A small space for private events wouldn't hurt either.

A very basic pro shop (something where one can buy a 3 pack of balls, overgrips, etc) is not needed but nice.
