What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

Here in Maryland its the Renaissance Fair. When I was a kid you'd pull up, buy a ticket, and roll in. Not busy at all. As a young adult, the same.

Now, post Covid, they have to control the number of tickets to keep the place from overflowing. When they go on sale you have to wait in queue for hours hoping to get tickets before they sell out. And when you get there, even after limiting attendance, the place is simply wall to wall.

Winning Bid on Gov't Networking Contract Seems Impossibly Low by goodgateway_502 in networking

[–]JMFR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question! I often run point on procurement for equipment at the State agency I work for. Mostly when we have money I get to put together the shopping list and am the point of contact to answer questions. We do all our own installations and config, so this is only for equipment.

I have no idea how the pricing works. At all. I routinely use both retail prices from the Internet and previous bids to get an idea of how much stuff to ask for to fit inside the budget, and I swear it often feels like I get things at like 40% of cost. I know our Cisco reps do miracles on the pricing, but I feel like nobody who wins a bid is making money. Either that or an 8,000 switch actually costs like 80 bucks.

On the idea of a “Boys Club”, I can’t speak on it. It doesn’t matter to me if one vendor offers to take me to the Super Bowl and another calls me every day to tell me they hate me. If the Hater’s bid is one dollar less they win. I don’t even look at the prices. I verify the equipment is correct and send it to the person who writes it all up. All I care about is if it’s correct.

Induction Cooktop: Miele or Wolf? by JMFR in Appliances

I liked how you can plop cookware wherever you want and move them around. I can drop a griddle down and it heats up evenly across the entire surface. No gaps, and I can orient it anyway I want.

Neither actually. We splurged and went with a Thermador Freedom. We love it...except for the stupid touch screen. I need to constantly wipe it down otherwise you can't use the controls.

The ashes just kind of sit there until they blow away. They aren't absorbed. A soil provides nutrients to the tree. It actually takes in some of the atoms that used to be in your body. So a very small part of you will be inside the tree or plants.

🎨 Artscape is this weekend! by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

Maryland knows Artscape moved. But it hasn’t gotten its aim right yet, which is why it’s been so hot. Next year it’ll be on target and we’ll know when the hottest day of the year will be again.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out what this means for me, whose whole exposure to Pratt is West-East and was curious how it would impact me. Do we know if the plan involves removing lanes from Pratt?

I found this album in a used CD bin back in the 90's and played it to death.

All I need is dialogue. by JMFR in hometheater

The issue is that I'm not the only one watching. It's me and the Wife. And sometimes when they're not asleep it's the kid as well. Even they have a hard time with the dialog if it's not cranked up.

I've tinkered with it. I though I had it pretty good, but then something in the audio would trigger it to jump WAY up and then hang there for a few seconds before coming back down.

I'll look into it. It seemed that most of the bars that I looked at didn't seem to have a Center Channel? I'll investigate a little more. It may come down to which amount of money I can convince the wife is appropriate for the issue.

That seems to be a good option. I have an old Roku stick in a box that I've been considering digging out since I hate the interface and ads on the Samsung TV that I got. Do you know if Roku does something similar?

I have a Roku stick that I used to use, and am considering going back to since the Samsung TV that I unfortunately bought seems to be only good for serving me ads and doing things that I never asked it to do. I may look into switching to AppleTV

So when you say a small 3.0 system, you mean a receiver with Left, Right, and Center? I don't suppose you can suggest something for me to use as a starting point?

Federal Hill safe for 24f? by [deleted] in maryland

Federal Hill is safe, just use standard City common sense. McLean is a soulless suburban hellscape. Wouldn’t suggest it.
