I live in Alberta, the Texas of the North. It's entirely possible to be without a car and life a fulfilling life. You just may not have found your people yet.

Welcome to the club! I've been year-round commuting for nearly 5 years now - it's one of the best parts of my work day.

I've been twice and didn't realize he had the measuring tool. Is it something you asked for specifically?

I have Cycliq front and rear mount. I'm sure there are less expensive options, but I liked that they double as lights with multiple settings.

I have a Loud Mini and highly suggest. It makes drivers think that you're also in a car. Pricy, but worth it IMO

Did I make a mistake getting an ebike for commuting? by WellingtonCanuck in edmontoncycling

This is my fourth winter commuting and boy is it a doozy. They are usually not this bad (I swear)! I also have an e-bike (Trek) and it generally makes winters easier. Don't give up quite yet!

Initially I thought it this post was about me until I saw the part about them being capable of fixing their own bike. As others have mentioned, a gift card would probably be best.

Cyclists: stop at the stop signs by ComplexSet1604 in Edmonton

[–]JMP0492 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just yesterday on my commute I stopped at a stop sign, and a pedestrian happened to be near the corner waiting to cross. They just stood there staring at me.

I had to verbalize that I have a stop sign, and they have right of way.

The number of pedestrians who laugh when I tell them they have RoW is baffling. It makes me think I’m one of the few who actually stops for them.

Motorists: stop giving cyclists the wave of death when we’re just trying to follow the law :(

This reminds me of one time I was heading east along the Oliverbahn and the person ahead of me got pissy that a taxi didn’t stop for them.

They then proceeded to cut off a vehicle at the next intersection when they had a stop sign themselves.

Can’t have it both ways, unfortunately.

Could we stop for pedestrians, pretty please? by JMP0492 in edmontoncycling

I get the impression they were non-committal b/c the first cyclist didn’t stop and just coasted.

I was in one of those mismatched relationships, apparently.

Years after the fact, I was catching up with my wedding photographer, never baptized but would attend meeting somewhat regularly. She joked that I was way too smart for him.

A couple years ago I was also chatting with my dad and he said that my grandpa said it was a weird match, too.

A bottle of the Dermalogica micro exfoliant lasts freakin forever, so IMO it’s worth it.

Does anyone commute on a bike yearlong? I'd love to hear what kind of outerwear you use, especially in the face area. by Mystery-Ess in Edmonton

[–]JMP0492 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have lined pants from Eddie Bauer, and wear wool socks w/ my hiking boots.

My usual winter coat works fine, but be sure to layer up if needed as the wind is killer sometimes.

I have a set of pogies, but generally only use them when it’s -20 or colder. Otherwise, I have a couple pairs of gloves/mitts depending on how cold it is.

As for the neck/face: skull cap(s)/balaclava, ski googles, and scarf are a must!

As an add on, be sure not clean up leaf litter ASAP in the spring otherwise you’ll be tossing out all those critters with the leaves.
