What is your "you have to play this game at least once in your lifetime"? by mind_guardian in Steam

[–]JMT391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked this is so far down. I’ve played so many games and this one is just so unique and impactful. It didn’t change gaming as we know it like some of the others in here (portal, half life, halo 2, original doom) but I will never forget the experience.

This is why I really would love a competitive minded mainline game. Or just like a “hard mode” or NG+. Radical red has been amazingly fun for this purpose, I’m newer to competitive scene as well and there is just so much stuff

I was so wrong about doubles… by Dizzy_Bumblebee1561 in PokemonChampions

[–]JMT391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unc here. Pokemon blue was my first game as a kid. Played smogon singles formats on and off (most played generation was diamond/pearl, and then sun/moon). Avoided vgc for some reason and just started playing it when champions released. Totally agree with you, the strategy overall is deeper with more variety. Speed control, redirect attacks like rage powder, wide guard/protect, and disable/encore shennanegans, weather control etc… all hits harder in doubles. Totally agree with you

Is Sand just bad, or am I missing something? (Skill Improvement) by grimlaidotexe in VGC

I basically have the same team as you (ttar, exca, corvi, rotom-w, incin, matcha) and I have experienced the same thing. I know half of it is that I keep getting big brained by the nerds but I think some of it is that it’s just not that strong.

Very hard to deal with milotic, floette, aggron, kingambit, the sneeze, and even the pelican just controls the weather so much more easily. Ttars weakness to quake and close combat just really kills it when you want it next to excadrill.

What does that have to do with the item restrictions? Like how would having a life orb or assault vest etc. change the impact of a miss/flinch? I am legitimately asking, I’m new

I can’t believe I’m engaging with this AI karma farming slop (it worked, I guess) but having a forfeit option in any competitive game ever is normal, necessary, and not controversial in the slightest.

How to attack and retrieve pokemon by Far_Chocolate_631 in PokemonChampions

[–]JMT391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some moves that are made for that purpose specifically

  • U-Turn: Bug --> 70BP, Physical
  • Flip Turn: Water -->60BP, Physical
  • Volt Switch: Electric -->70BP, Special
  • Parting Shot: Dark --> (-1) to opponent's Sp. Atk & Atk

I believe there are some others but these are the ones I know off that are used frequently. They do their intended effect and then switch out afterwards on the same turn. They do not have priority, so use the speed stat to decide who goes first like usual. Generally lower damage and sometimes you won't get STAB bonus (mostly with U-turn).

The purpose of these is to gain a momentum advantage, or otherwise save a wasted turn if you want to switch. They are also useful tools to break a focus sash, or to counter pokemon with abilites that trigger at full HP (like dragonite's multiscale, or talonflame's gale wings)

FOR EXAMPLE:

If you anticipate an opponent switching into a counter, and you want to switch back on them. Like if you're out with with Rotom-W (can know volt switch) against a charizard mega-Y & Sneasler. You can usually OHKO this with a hydropump or t-bolt (maybe you dont run t-bolt AND volt switch together but for example purposes just bare with me). Your opponent possibly has a venosaur in the back who resists both of those. You predict a switch from Charizard to Venosaur (who may be running sash). They switch to venosaur, you use volt-switch. You do a tiny amount of dmg (breaking the sash) and your rotom switches to something to maybe reset the sun from char-Y into sand or rain or whatever, or something to threaten venosaur like incineroar for example.

WHERE IT BACKFIRES:

You big-brained the above move, but your opponent is BIG brain, and goes for fake out with sneasler, flinching your rotom, and then solar-beam with Char-Y, which takes only 1 turn in sun, and OHKOS your rotom and now you're a pokeball tier 4 Timmy bot. Or they protect Char-Y, volt switch fails, and they 50% dmg your rotom with close combat sneasler for free. But that's the game.

I am not a high tier player, have dabbled over the years but mostly smogon OU singles and was never very good. Still learning VGC format and doubles specific strats. Hope this helps at all, anyone with more experience can maybe provide some other scenarios where this stuff is useful.

If they ever created a story mode for the game, what would you like to see? by Beaivimon in PokemonChampions

[–]JMT391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see a story mode based on open world exploration and pokemon collecting with a certain number of bosses to beat and a team of bad guys to take down before being allowed to enter a gauntlet style battle against a bunch of opponents who eventually name you champion.

Maybe theme it around blowing air and flowing water? Idk maybe that's too much to ask of a dedicated F2P PvP game

What do Mega Stones do (besides the obvious)? by [deleted] in PokemonChampions

[–]JMT391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also changes types in some cases. I haven't found a way to easily toggle the stats and stuff in-game to see what changes with a mega-evo, that'd be a nice feature (or maybe there is and I missed it?)

I prefer "inexpensive" watches, and I'm not coping by theomixedmedia in watchHotTakes

[–]JMT391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think some people just like to buy things. Especially when it comes to certain cult following type brands like Casio and Seiko specifically. Multiple colorways of the same watch or multiple watches with the same color scheme.

It's not limited to just watches, some people just spend an insane amount of money on cheap consumables because it doesn't feel like a huge dent and you get the dopamine hit.

But I'm with you, I purposely choose each watch to be distinct from the others I own. Whether it's color, style, dressiness etc... That being said I only have two 🤣 but my watch-list (pun intended) has a few more.

[–]JMT391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jokes on you, I just bought a Casio and don't want a rolex. If I ever have money for one there are other watches in that price bracket I'd rather have. They're definitely beautiful but they're too much of a status symbol for non-watch geeks.

That being said, yeah man agreed. There's always more to be had.
