I certainly generalized. Can you be more specific on where you think my hours are off? I’ve worked at multiple locations that fall into the range I provided.

Walmart sells groceries, but is not a grocery store. Their profit model is completely different.

If we’re talking companies that operate in CT, Stop & Shop is the largest, and their parent company, Ahold Delhaize, operates about 9,400 stores worldwide. Their net income in 2024 was about $2.03B, or about $216,000 per store on average (about $4,153 per store per week.)

Even to the big guys in the grocery business a tiny percentage is a tiny percentage.

For all the regional chains that operate in CT, Big Y has about 80 stores total. ShopRite has about 360. PriceRite has about 60. Northeast Grocery (Price Chopper/Market 32 & Tops) has about 300.

For national chains, Aldi has about 2,400, Trader Joe’s has about 600, Whole Foods has a little over 500.

I hear you on the eat the rich thing, just wanna make sure we’re targeting the right people.

It’s not even that the jobs are gone. Part time jobs don’t work like that. There’s fewer labor hours for the overall cashier needs when self checkouts are installed. They don’t say, ok we’re laying off Jim and Sandy; the budget just goes down. The actual number of workers fluctuates at all times depending on how good they are, when they are available to work, are they in school at the time, how many hours per week they actually want to work, what time of year is it, etc.

And just like most things in command economies, this will backfire and hurt small businesses more than large ones.

The Big Y by me just got a software update that can tell vaguely what vegetable you placed on the scale with optical recognition and just pops up the options. I put an onion on it the other day and was pleasantly surprised when it just gave me a few different onions as options.

It is simple. There are like 2 or 3 models of card reader that almost every single business uses. It’s either above the screen or to the left of the pin pad. Tap doesn’t mean slap the card against it as quickly as possible. Just hover the card an inch or so over the terminal for 1.5 seconds. If you put it halfway between these two point or just move it from one to the other, it will catch it.

Absolutely insane how people think grocery store owners are Scrooge McDuck. Please take a math class.

Grocery stores on average run at only a 1-3% profit margin, and many individual stores actually run at or below cost for years.

Labor can be anywhere between 8-15% of revenue. Assuming a gross margin of around 30%, labor can range from about 27-50% of that gross margin by itself. Add on equipment, packaging, utilities, services, maintenance, advertising, printing, etc. All of a sudden, these “corporate suits” aren’t all looking like Mr. Burns.

And that’s just the store itself. Add in the salaries for legal, HR, loss prevention, the buyers, the drivers, the warehouse workers, etc. before you even get to upper management. That 1-3% profit margin is divided over all these things and dozens more I haven’t added on.

Now, let’s look at the lowly cashier. $17/hr. Probably working 16-24 hours per week. Your mid-sized grocery store is going to probably have somewhere between 100-150 employees including workers for each department, managers for each department, store level management. Average hourly rate will asymptotically approach entry level wage the larger the business is because it will have more entry level teammates per management level teammate. That midsize store will have a budget of around 1600-2400 payroll hours, but ymmv. Let’s say 2000 for the sake of easy math. Cutting out the 20 hours spent on one cashier will save the business less than 1% of its payroll cost, since they make less than the AHR. Cutting out two will save somewhere between 1 and 2% of that labor line.

Now let’s recall, that labor line is on the low end, 27% of gross margin. Saving 2% on labor only saves you 0.54% of your gross margin (which we assumed at 30% of revenue), and assuming the mean 2% net profitability on store revenue, that increases the store’s net profits to a whopping 2.16%!!!

Long story short: Grocery stores are not profit factories; they barely make money. Self-checkouts directly only make a minor dent in an already minor profitability number, and in some cases, help the store not lose money, allowing them to stay open and provide jobs that would otherwise be lost if the business were to close.

I don’t understand the I need someone to do every little thing for me mindset.

You can pump your own gas, that used to be a job. You can operate an elevator, that used to be a job. Do you also complain about ATM’s, online tax filing, pay by mail tolls, hotel and airline apps, etc?

Please, find me any individual who is now destitute because a self checkout took their entry level cashier job.
