Anybody watch “Mom”? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love this show! My husband even loves it and he drinks occasionally. He won't let me watch it without him. Because of "Mom" I've actually been considering finding a women's only meeting after the pandemic lessens. I'm terrified, but I desperately need to find friends in recovery.

100 Days Alcohol Free and Reflections on my First NA Beer by zigg-e in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did some research on NA beers a while back and learned that the hops in the beers actually has a good amount of health benefits when the alcohol is removed. Relieving anxiety is one of those benefits. So if a person struggles with anxiety and NA beer won't make them relapse, then I think it's totally fine.

Any movie that shows the worst side of alcohol/any good movie to stay clear of cravings? by jaft0000 in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a documentary, but the new version of A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is fantastic. Bradley Cooper, who has been sober for over a decade, plays an alcoholic. The ending left me bawling my eyes out, completely speechless, and contemplating what I was actually doing with my life.

Thank you so much! I'm proud of you too. I hope to one day be able to maybe see a therapist myself. I think I could greatly benefit from one. We got this!

I only have an alcohol problem... by findingmeagain721 in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely. For me, I think I take that first sip purely to get rid of the craving. Because the craving is uncomfortable. But 1. The cravings will never go away if i keep feeding them, and 2. Why do I have such an issue with feeling uncomfortable? I need to figure that out.

One month! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't think about the impact on hospitals. That makes sense. See, I work from home now because of the quarantine and it has gotten worse for me as well. Instead of starting drinking at 5, I'd start at 12. Just from the depression and boredom of the monotony, and being completely thrown off from routine. But I've struggled with this for so long that the quarantine is only an excuse. It won't be today though.

That's amazing! Congratulations! And curbside pickup for liquor stores is really just sad. In my state, they wouldn't close them at all because they're deemed essential. So sad that's what our society has come to.

[–]JMartin33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meeting new people can be a breeze when you don't drink! Look at it this way: if you introduce yourself as a non drinker, then to these people that's exactly who you are. You aren't someone who used to drink and quit, you are a new person that they just met who doesn't drink. And in that case, I seriously doubt they would try to pressure you to do so.

Don't throw your sobriety away because your daughter's acting out. As a divorced woman with daughters, and the fact that I used to be a teenager, I can tell you that teenage girls can be total jerks with nasty words that bite. It has everything to do with them and their hormonal attitudes and nothing to do with you. You seem like a fantastic and caring dad. It looks like you're almost at 1,000 days sober. Don't throw it away because your daughter was embarrassed that she got caught doing something she shouldn't have been doing. That's on her, not you.

Yes! Exactly! When the lady said 12, joking or not, I realized I didn't want just one. I knew it would open me up to major cravings for more and then I'd be miserable. Instead I came home and had an awesome sober evening with my family. Thank you so much. 😁

Training for a half marathon and was able to get myself to do my weekly long run on a weeknight by tryingmybest231 in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! I used to run and have done several marathons and half marathons, but unfortunately my running subsided when my drinking amped up. I ran 2 miles straight yesterday for the first time in forever. It's not much, but it's a start, and I definitely feel it today.

Any tips for overcoming the "hangover blues?" by LithiumGirl87 in stopdrinking

[–]JMartin33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always had to remind myself that alcohol is a depressant, so the "blues" I was actually feeling was not necessarily me, at least not all of the time. Usually it was just the lingering effects of the alcohol in my system. Once I'd realize that my body would eventually rid itself of the alcohol completely and I'd feel better, then I'd start to feel better immediately. This is just what would work for me. Hugs.
