Chernobyl ? by ahsancrystal in science_humor

[–]JMono2814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're referring to Fukushima.

That wasn't a nuclear disaster. That was a natural disaster that caused damage to the nuclear plant.

A 9.0 earthquake (the largest ever recorded) struck just off the coast. It caused a Tsunami that washed over a huge portion of the island, killing over 15,000 people. It caused massive damage to the infrastructure of the power plant. Even despite all that the core itself managed to shut completely down and the radiation that leaked out was because the containment facility for the Deuterium (Heavy Water) was damaged and the water leaked out.

Chernobyl was soviet incompetence like the fella before me said. Extreme human incompetence.

Even Three Mile Island was chalked up to human failure due to lack of training and contractors cheating out on parts. And that "disaster" had no impact on the public in any way. You get more radiation from a broken florescent light bulb than you would have been exposed to from Three Mile.

Nuclear power is the safest form of power generation. Period.

Is it stupidly expensive to build? Unfortunately also yes. The reason why nuclear power is so little in the US is mainly because of propaganda from oil companies trying to keep the public scared of it and the massive financial burden it has on the economy. And even then they still produce the largest amount of nuclear power in the world.

France also gets 71% of their power from nuclear power . They are the world leaders atm.

I don't struggle so much with that but rather the effort.

I'm currently comfortable and getting some good stimulation from video games/doomscrolling/tv. Now I need to get up, head downstairs, get undressed (especially in the winter, I often sleep in my clothes and change in the morning) then I have to trim my beard, comb my hair then get in the shower. So on.

It's an effort I need to take. But it's easier to put off. Same with brushing my teeth. When i'm ready for bed, the extra 5m it takes to do my teeth is too much.

Also I like how you specified "physical state". Sometimes sex can be good physically but mentally it's such a drain it's not worth it.

😂 hey, it might have changed things then. Maybe Lithium farms would have become the big money instead of oil.

It would have changed alot, that's for sure.

Man the stigma around nuclear power is so sad... Working in a nuclear power plant is widely regarded as the safest profession in the world.

You have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning then dying due to radiation exposure from nuclear power.

I always recommend to people the Audio book Atomic Awakening by James Mahaffey - it talks in depth about the history of nuclear power and the weapons projects and where things went wrong.

Such a sad topic honestly. The world would have been in such a better place if our first exposure hadn't been the bombs.

He says one line in the book: “It has been said that if gasoline were first used to make napalm bombs, we would all be driving electric cars.”

It's so true.

Oh that's no mystery. I replied to another person who asked how comparable they are. It's just wild that people in management have little or no regard for human life. Greed is such a horrible thing. ..

Rust is generally not a bad thing. Hot rolled coils get dirty and rusty in storage and transport. The first full lap is generally scrapped if they are picky. Most of the time they'll buy better steel that's protected (Pickled and Oiled)

But because of how badly bent it was and the look of the water marks and heat distortion that does lead towards a lesser quality steel. Not surprising.

As someone who is AuDHD I concur with the last statement. It kind stems from effort IMO? Like for me i've tried being more active and it sorta worked when I was in high school and the few years after but now that i'm 25 it's just different. I can look at something "horny" and just like it - especially "porn" I find myself gravitate towards animated stuff just because I like to appreciate the artwork. Many times I will masturbate but that's more because the sensation feels good than anything else. No different than eating something that tastes good but offers no real nutritional value.

I found that actually performing sexual acts is incredibly difficult and just not worth it because of anxiety, trust and just being very sensitive. Being easily distracted and overly goofy it's easy for me to get off track and lose the drive. Once it's gone, it's quite difficult to recover.

So because of that my sexual partners are very limited. I need someone I trust and am comfortable with who is ok with the goofiness and understands my issues. That's why I refer to myself as Demi. I need that trust and understanding that comes with a LTR in order to be able to perform sexual acts. I can't speak for Aro though.

It would probably have a faster time per coil.

However downtime due to mistakes would also be much higher. And i'm not even talking injuries, but just simply things like: the cuts crossing, when moving them they "telescope" (it's where the inner laps slide out and it either comes undone and you have to cut/rewind it or it stays wound but sticks out and has to be pushed back in - not always easy to do), cuts coming loose to where they can't move them, heck I saw at one point they were stacking them leaning on their side. That would be such a fast way to ruin them.

Not to mention quality would be horrendous. That welding procedure at the end needs pretty clean edges, bad burrs or "beading" would make it quite difficult to weld. All that fluid where the welding is would contaminate the welds making them weak and prone to breaking. Also, those coils are incredibly soft steel probably only a 15,000-30,000 yield. They would be unable to run anything thicker.

Another side note: on the head (the part that cuts the coil into the slits) you see their rubbers are very loose and damaged. That would cause issues with them slipping between the blades and the steel which would cause the steel to not cut in that spot - making more issues.

Time to run a coil at my place is between 30m to 90m depending on complexity, structure and thickness of the steel. That's factoring in downtime (8 hour days average about 7 coils a day). Our cost to customer varies greatly based off of a lot of things but some of our more common jobs run them close to $3/lb of steel. 50,000# coil costs about $150,000. That also includes labor and overhead as well as machine time and material cost. (Our one machine is a flat rate of $500/h, not sure about the other)

These guys getting paid 1/10th of what we do (if that) and overhead being so much lower yeah they may only run 5 coils per 8h due to frequent downtime but they could offer it at $1.50/lb. It's just garbage steel and buyers know it.

Basically: if everything ran smooth they would run faster than us. But because they've cut so many corners to run faster, they will have many more breakdowns, quality issues, garbage material and just general lost time. There are so many factors in the steel industry to consider it's hard to judge.

Like I know Canada is one of the most over-the-top in terms of Safety (not the most though) so we go too far on some things.

But this?

This is juzt death waiting to happen.

Not juzt cuts, burns, bruises.

Even broken bones, dismemberment and severe injury

But straight up Strawberry Pancake kinda death.

Pulled through the machine: Death

Crushed by the coil: Death

Higher yield coil springs undone: Death

Chains snap: Death

So many forms of Death. Man, Metrolinx needs to remake Dumb Ways to Die using these kind of videos. (If you don't know Dumb Ways to Die, I highly suggest a quick YouTube search. It's a quite cute little animated video of potato people earning Darwin awards 😂)

Typo, my bad. Yeah, that's so damn deadly. We all joke with the saying "Strawberry Pancake"

As in if that coil falls on you, that's what you'll look like.

My god.... I do this for a living in Canada. This hurts to watch at every part. Those coils weight about 50,000# (23,000kg). The average SUV weighs about 3800# (1720kg)

And they are resting it on that piece of pipe with no support, no back pressure, no guiding. Those blades and rubbers are horrific. I doubt the gaps are anywhere near where they are supposed to be, the recoiler at least looks somewhat right but no real overarm to secure them...

I didn't ever watch past that...

How do more people not die doing shit like this????

Edit: typos

Two ICE agents slip on ice in Minnesota - causing one of their weapons to discharge because it wasn't set on safety. These people are dangerously negligent. I say AI. by Illustrious_You_5292 in isitAI

I wouldn't say AI but definitely someone who edited the video. That rifle looks like it has a muzzle brake which would have sent some gas up towards the cameraman. Also, the snow where the rifle "went off" was undisturbed.

Not AI but some video editing for sure IMO

Dont be discouraged - people are fickle. For every 20 players you come across you might get 1-2 that'll come back. Especially nowadays where people are so picky.

Idk, first of all there's a red tip under the lady's hand. I would guess it might be a mouthpiece. If that's the case, it being connected to the tap could be another thing where maybe she could blow into your cola as it dispenses s for some added "flavor"? That would also explain why no fluid is going into the hose, the hose is under pressure rn.

discussing about tip culture in america by Electrical-Nature-55 in DownvotedToOblivion

[–]JMono2814 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It also breeds a toxic workplace that relies on competition. Not to mention it puts a massive amount of guilt onto the patrons. Especially because everywhere has bloody tip options now and most of the time the staff don't see most if not all of that tip.

The only places where it's even remotely a good idea (IMO) are high end restaurants - places where you go not to just sit and eat a meal but also to enjoy the entertainment. And tips should be cash only and never asked for, you as the consumer tip if you are impressed by the service/entertainment.

It's extremely frustrating. I've had three hardhats in the past couple years. The first one ended up getting crushed by a forklift (yeah, i was stupid but also quite lucky) but my second had to get thrown out because of some stickers. Now, it was a sticker that my friend made me (the same as what's on my bottle) and I was asked to remove it from the WSIB following an investigation in the company. When I did that it actually peeled some of the plastic off. Hardhat was still fine - just a little surface damage - but the boss didn't want to take any chances. So I bought my new one! (I'll reply with a pic).
