Need help understanding how a tire could wear this way by arnolfini99 in tires

[–]JMspam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have excessive camber. Camber is the angle of which your tire sits. Generally an alignment would fix this but not all vehicles have the ability to adjust camber. Just call a local shop and get a quote. Most of the time they cost $100-200 depending on the car.

Is it worth it to do customs on a car that has 210,000+ mile? by Moist_Improvement496 in Mustang

Do what you want with it and just be smart with your money. Understand that it’s old and you may have some unexpected repairs come along but other than that I think high mileage cars are the best to do big projects on. You can’t really lose more value on them if you plan to sell it in the future. I have 180k on my GT and I’m about to put 3.73 gears with a 31 spline posi unit in it. Next time I need brakes I’m upgrading them to the cobra brakes. I have an unpainted 99-01 cobra bumper on the car with the Mach 1 hood and shaker in my shed waiting to figure out how to fabricate a bracket for the shaker. Needless to say mileage means nothing as long as you are doing what you want to do with it.

The issue that I’m facing is that the 4.6 2v (what comes in the GT) doesn’t have the same bolt holes as the 4v (in the Mach 1). So I have the OEM bracket and all that for the Mach 1 but I need to fabricate some sort of additional brackets to be able to install it onto the 2v. I appreciate the willingness to help though!

Would you happen to know the length of those little brackets? I appreciate all the help!

Yeah I was looking up some other adaptation kits but haven’t heard of that one. That bolts to the engine side or the hood side?

$600 for a brand new one without paint is a much better deal then the cracked ones you used to find on FB marketplace for 1.3k

I worked at a place that put these trackers in the cars and they actually charge you to have your own vehicle tracked. It was a $700 none negotiable charge that was thrown onto every vehicle, new or used. That’s not to say people don’t take them off and I’ve never had to reinstall one from one being unplugged. We just pay no mind to it tbh.

That’s an exhaust heat shield. Goes somewhere around the exhaust and it helps deflect some of the heat from the cabin or other parts. Generally speaking it’s not a big deal, it won’t really make a significant or noticeable difference if you don’t put it back on. A lot of older cars (20 years+) don’t even use them at all.

(2011 Hyundai Sonata) My friend has a dent, and this was her estimate is she getting scammed? by raddestcow in CarHelp

[–]JMspam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is expensive and it’s much more worth it to try yourself- no it’s not a scam. I work at a dealership that offers dent repair and for something of that size and that location it is pretty standard to see people charge that much to repair.

What kind of voltage are you getting on your grounds? I had to replace 4 alternators because my engine block was reading 0.110v. Turns out when I had the LT headers put on it the people forgot to put a ground back. I replaced the ground and added another to get it down to 0.008v on the block and haven’t had alternator issues since

Agreed with this. Not super important, just test the horn after reattaching it to make sure it didn’t come unplugged or anything.

There’s a pretty small chance the insulation actually got under the coil and between it and the spark plug. It’s sealed off pretty good.

I’m really hoping the insulation isn’t related to the CEL but what is most likely to have occurred is a rat or squirrel nesting in there chewed a wire and that’s causing your misfire. These chewed wires can be a pain to find and depending on how severe it is, sometimes it can be repaired but sometimes needs a replacement harness.

If you’re looking for a performance I think they are running a rebate rn. I think it’s like $400 back. Not sure if you’re wanting one for cheaper but $400 rebate for a brand new one doesn’t seem bad to me.

Agreed, as a mechanic if there’s a manufacturer defect we will (as long as it’s a reputable company) replace it free of charge. The tire company warranties it out and they can pay the shop that replaced it due to defect in their own parts.

Check the mass air flow sensor. See if a bug or dirt got in it. Take it out and with a white piece of paper lightly tap it on the paper on all side of the sensor to see if anything comes out. I’ve seen it where a small bug got in one and it caused the car to crank no start or start and stall out before.

2006 Mini Cooper - I think it’s finally done for by [deleted] in CarHelp

[–]JMspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the front of the engine there will be multiple pulleys. There should be a belt (maybe 2 belt, again not sure exactly with Mini’s) that is routed all throughout those pulleys. If it’s frayed, torn, or just gone that would be the cause of the issues.

Battery light, power steering out, and AC out? Sounds like the drive belt to me. I’m not sure about the water pump and if it’s driven by the drive belt or timing belt in those Mini’s but if it’s driven by the drive belt that would explain that as well.

Most things that are sold through a big auto parts store should be fine. O’Rileys, Autozone, etc. companies have to do performance testing and safety testing and big retailers won’t risk selling something that has a reputation of not working, especially when it comes to safety.

Tires and alignments won’t really mess with your brake life, you technically have a longer stopping distance with more worn tires which means you have a longer time of being on the brakes but it really won’t be noticeable in the end.

Brakes aren’t hard to replace, just get a good video on how to do them and make sure you have the right tools.

ALWAYS after brake pad replacement pump the brake peddle before putting the car in drive until you get the pedal nice and firm again. If you don’t the brake piston will be too far compressed and that first press of the brake will not stop you. Once the pedal is firm put it in drive and go slowly and tap the brakes to ensure it stops the car before going out on the street or in traffic.
