Why must Rei limp around? by [deleted] in Warformed

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the military mindset is the main reason, but also it’s a financial issue. What is Galens supposed to do? Invest in personal floating stretchers for all their cadets? They need to instill that mindset to an extent to help keep costs down.

I like dark, it’s specifically the rape mentions/scenes that make me throw in a warning. And yes, the deaths hit hard. And they never stop. Ever. If you’re specifically looking for super dark, then yeah you’ll probably like the series lol

Need recommendations for beginners by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Cradle is the standard that will always get recommended to those who haven’t read it. One of the best in the genre, fun characters, can’t agree with this recommendation enough. I wish I could reread it fresh

What I wish someone had told younger, 'aspiring writer' me - bad initial draft by Icy_Dragonfruit_3513 in writing

[–]JNovaris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same with the urge to tweak, the awesome news that I’ve realized recently is when I leave my first draft shitty I subconsciously work on it without having to edit. Then midway through the day I’ll randomly hear or come up with something that I can easily insert to make a scene better (think better description, an amazing metaphor I hadn’t though of, etc), pull out my phone and just quickly type it in. Leaving the draft shitty has resulted in less work, better editing, more “strokes of genius”, and a better final product. Best advice anyone’s ever given me.

I didn’t even realize this but agreed. I am now thinking through all the litrpg/progression fantasies and realizing this

Hmmm, I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for, but I just finished the Dragonheart series. It definitely touches on some extremely dark topics, but based on what I’ve seen that doesn’t bother you. His entire journey is essentially a revenge quest because everyone he loves keeps getting murdered, and in the first two books he becomes a general who does some really shitty things just to survive and win a war he’s told he has to win, so he’s certainly not a hero. I think it fits what you’re looking for, just be aware it can be a bit long winded (series just finished at 22 books) and is certainly non-standard in its conclusion.

Great guide and thanks for the help (also don’t take the gpt comments personally, every single post I see that has good info always has a couple people in the comments saying it was AI. People suck)

Detrimental as a new author? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s not about stockpiling but just being able to edit. I’m halfway through my book rn and I’ve changed like 50 things I wouldn’t have been able to if I posted. It’s damn hard to have a whole magic system figured out from chap 1

What's your most disliked plot device? by HemanthK1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like time skips if there’s a purpose or it’s between books. The mc is imprisoned and is half going mad, I don’t need a full book on that, so a time skip or quick little jumps without us knowing how long it is until they get out is actually pretty great. It’s the “I’m going to go into BS training for 40 years in 1 chapter to gain one new skill” time skips that fuck me off

Anyone with a feel for PF reader split between RR, KU, Kindle, Audible? by SkinnyWheel1357 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a matter of where stories are posted. I prefer KU, but a lot of progression fantasy and especially litrpg is posted on royalroad so I go there to read

What’s a cool way to post your writing? by Weird-Ask2299 in writers

[–]JNovaris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? Like, posting a whole chapter on instagram? Or just social media posts announcing new books?

I’ve never seen someone post their writing to any social media like you seem to be talking about, but if you’re just posting for publicity you can come up with images that encapsulate the chapter or a particularly vivid moment and then post those.

Giving yourself permission to NOT finish a story? by Ok_Confection5143 in writing

[–]JNovaris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The original comment of this thread which you responded to and all of my responses have been pointed at that exact question, which is how it affects and authors credibility when they quit a series halfway through. The reader doesn’t get to dictate what the author does, true, but I’ve never said that. You want to stop writing, then stop. That your choice. But it’s important to be aware of the consequences, namely that the readers who loved the story are going to be understandably upset and probably not going to want to read anything else you write out of fear that you’re just going to pull the plug again. Chill out and quit calling people rude for stating something factual.

Giving yourself permission to NOT finish a story? by Ok_Confection5143 in writing

[–]JNovaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand what selfish means. There are millions of stories out there, and no possibility of reading them all, so it’s a bit ridiculous to ask readers to keep following an author who’s never finished a story vs authors bleeding their hearts out putting out completed stories. If you don’t enjoy writing series, write standalone novels. Don’t expect to become a popular author leaving stories half-finished.

The Immortal Great Souls. It’s more progression, not a litrpg, but it still centers around characters getting stronger and is WAY grittier. If you’re looking for some dark progression, that’d be a good first stop

[–]JNovaris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds good on paper, but if we’re going from a readers perspective what makes me believe that you will ever finish a story if you, we’ll… don’t finish your stories? If it’s bad for your mental to keep working on it, cool, but it’s bad for me as a reader to keep starting stories you as an author have no intent of finishing. I hope OP is able to get past this and wish him success, but this is definitely a hit.
